This grove of Quaking Aspens (Populus tremuloides) is located in Southern California’s San Gorgonio Wilderness and the new Sand to Snow National Monument. It is one of only two aspen groves in California found outside the Sierra Nevada range. Once full of mature trees renowned for the beautiful sound of their leaves blowing in the wind and the golden color of their autumn foliage, the grove was devasted by the “Lake” fire in June and July of 2015. Although little above ground-level survived, aspens are blessed with a robust root system which can apparently survive even severe fire events stoked by drought and climate change. Three years later the grove is regenerating itself, with 2-meter-high saplings reaching up once more to the sun.

Sensitive and delicate he was led by patriotism and the love of freedom to leave home and friends for the toilsome labors of war, and shrank from no fatigue or danger until, worn out in her service, he gave his life for his country.

Petrovaradin Fortress is a fortress in the town of Petrovaradin, itself part of the City of Novi Sad, Serbia. It is located on the right bank of the Danube river. The cornerstone of the present-day southern part of the fortress was laid on 18 October 1692 by Charles Eug`ene de Cro"y. Petrovaradin Fortress has many underground tunnels as well as 16 km of uncollapsed underground countermine system.

We open this panorama looking up the Colorado River in a stunning view of the upper Marble Canyon as it flows through a lengthy straight section of the canyon. Where the river first comes into view is just downstream from Badger Canyon. Just downstream from the bend, and hiding as a tiny brown speck in the middle of the river, is 10 Mile Rock. You will have to zoom in tight to even get a glimpse of it. Much more visible is Soap Creek Rapid right below the camera. You can clearly see all of the rapid from its beginning to it run out. Soap Creek is a small stream that flows in to the Colorado River at mile 11.4. There is a large river campground just upstream of the creek and subsequent Soap Creek Rapid. The shorter fork of Soap Creek begins its journey to the river only a few miles to the north in the Vermillion Cliffs behind Cliff Dweller's Lodge. The longer section, South Fork of Soap Creek begins about 9 miles west of Cliff Dweller's Lodge. The two forks join together about 1.7 miles south of Cliff Dweller's. The Soap Creek drainage can be hiked with some minor technical obstructions. It is a relatively popular day hike for fishing the Colorado River.
