Exploring the rocky terrain at the top of the Rucu Pichincha volcano, near Quito in Ecuador. As the summit was caught in the clouds, there was no panoramic view to enjoy but we can still imagine the impressive precipice on both sides of the ridge, and the rocks disappear in the fog.

We have now reached the summit of the Rucu Pichincha volcano near Quito, Ecuador. The rocky and sandy soil is all we can see, because in early afternoon the top of the mountain is totally caught in the clouds. It's like being in a cold and humid fog. Even if there is no view to enjoy, it's always a great pleasure to reach the top after such a difficult hike.

We are now very close to the summit of the Rucu Pichincha volcano near Quito, in Ecuador. There isn't really any path anymore, just this very steep rocky slope totally caught in the clouds, preventing any view of the surrounding landscape. It is particularly hard to hike up this slope at this altitude, but the place is just incredible.

Following the hiking trail up the Rucu Pichincha volcano in Ecuador. As we get closer to the top in this early afternoon, the large rocks are just silhouettes caught in the mist and the clouds, making the place very intimidating and fascinating. The high altitude makes it very hard to trek, but it is a unique experience to be high in the Andes mountains.

Following the trail up the Rucu Pichincha volcano near Quito, Ecuador. The path runs through the interesting plants that grow in high altitude in the Andes mountains and it's great to be able to see them up close, in this fabulous landscape. As we get closer to the top, the clouds and austere rocks are more and more present.

Climbing the Rucu Pichincha volcano near Quito, in Ecuador. As we get closer to the top, the cold and wind are more and more present, the landscape gets more and more rocky and austere, and we are getting closer to the clouds. The path is a wonderful viewpoint to the scenery of the Andes mountains and grasslands.

On the way up the Rucu Pichincha volcano in Ecuador, suddenly the path stops and it is necessary to climb this rocky part in order to continue the hike. The steep slope and the precipice makes it a little scary and the altitude is challenging, but the wild scenery of the Andes is the reward, engulfed in the afternoon clouds.

This is a beautiful and unique place right on the Israeli Lebanese border. The sea, the caves and the white cliffs make the whole area into a special place. Highly recommended for a visit. Rosh HaNikra or Hanikra is a geologic formation on the border between Israel and Lebanon, located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, in the Western Galilee. It is a white chalk cliff face which opens up into spectacular grottos. The Rosh HaNikra grottoes are cavernous tunnels formed by sea action on the soft chalk rock. The total length is some 200 meters. They branch off in various directions with some interconnecting segments. A tunnel was built during the Second World War for the Haifa-Beirut railroad line, and in 1968 a second one was dug, both connecting the grottoes with each other and allowing access (currently: only exit) along the former route of the WWII railroad. For many years though, the only access to the grottoes was from the sea and experienced swimmers and divers were the only ones capable of visiting. The 400 meters long tunnel dug in 1968 between the grottoes and slightly above sea level improved the situation, and soon after a cable car was built to take visitors down from the top of the cliff to the tunnels. With a 60-degree gradient, this cable car is advertised as the steepest in the world. Rosh Hanikra was the location where Israeli and Lebanese officials negotiated and concluded an armistice agreement in 1949 which ended the Lebanese-Israeli component of the 1948 War of Israeli Independence.
