A look at old mining buildings & relics at Jawbone Flats (now the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center), part of the Opal Creek Wilderness, Oregon.  Gold was discovered here in 1859 & the Jawbone Flats mining camp itself was established in 1931.

Re-upload of a panorama from 2013 that is slightly brighter than before.  The Dorset Quarry outside of Dorset, Vermont is the oldest quarry in the United States w/ work started in 1785 & ending in 1910 for extraction of marble.  Today it is now a converted popular swimming hole to local residents.

This is the second pond we came across while exploring the bottom of the Lost Canyon (Ca~non de Los Perdidos) in the Peruvian coastal desert of Nazca. Given that this is one of the driest places on our planet, it was surprising to find such shallow ponds, after following the dry riverbed of the Rio Seco. We are close to the northern end of the canyon, which is the most beautiful and most spectacular part, between tall golden curved rocky walls.

In the arid coastal desert of Nazca, in Peru, small ponds of water can be found at the bottom of the Lost Canyon. Surrounded by impressive vertical rocky walls, these ponds are remains of water in the otherwise dry riverbed of the Rio Seco (Dry River). It is the most spectacular spot inside the canyon and there is no doubt these golden sands will soon see more tourists.

A true miracle of Nature! Here in the middle of the most arid deserts on the planet, at the bottom of the Ca~non de Los Perdidos, or Lost Canyon, the Rio Seco has left a little bit of water in the form of this shallow pond. This pond is beautifully surrounded by rounded, overhanging, golden canyon walls.

We are getting to the most impressive part of the Lost Canyon, or Ca~non de Los Perdidos in the Desert of Nazca in Peru. The canyon is now narrow and shows incredible curvy walls with a beautiful golden color. It is amazing to think that all of this was dug by the small Rio Seco (Dry River). The riverbed may look dry, but it is still sustaining some small patches of vegetation, in one of the most arid deserts on Earth.

Walking deeper inside the Lost Canyon, or Ca~non de Los Perdidos in the heart of the Desert of Nazca in southern Peru. Following the dry riverbed of the Rio Seco (Dry River), the canyon is now getting narrower and the golden rocky walls are getting more impressive, at the top of the slopes of yellow sand.
