The monastery of San Marco was founded in the 13th century. It is known that since 1299 there was a monastery of the Silvestrians. In 1437 the Florentine merchant Cosimo de 'Medici (the Elder) passed the church and monastery to the Dominican monks and commissioned the architect Michelozzo di Bartolomeo to reconstruct it, which was basically finished in 1442, although some works continued even later.

Taormina is a picturesque hilltop town on the east coast of Sicily. This aerial photo highlights the unique architectural challenges faced by architects over the centuries. Mount Enta is clearly visible spewing plumes of steam high up in the air while the Ionian sea lies calmly below Taormina.

The area of Gyp Creek displays as twisted and tilted layers of sedimentary rocks. The rocks were once a dome shape but the top portion has eroded away and left the sharp ridges of the sedimentary layers protruding towards the sky.

Dans les ann'ees 1960, le Cabildo de Lanzarote s’est tourn'e vers le grand artiste Jes'us Soto, qui allait devenir un proche collaborateur de Manrique, pour l’adaptation de ce sanctuaire naturel d’origine volcanique qui est devenu un centre d’attraction pour des milliers de visiteurs qui aspirent `a d'ecouvrir son secret. 5pqSoto a ordonn'e la visite et a montr'e toute sa connaissance du traitement de la lumi`ere et de l’ombre pour extraire la luminosit'e de la pierre et mettre en valeur les formes fantaisistes que la lave laissait derri`ere elle dans son chemin d'evastateur. 6pqLa gamme chromatique d’ocres, de gris, de noirs et de rouges r`egne dans ce paradis de t'en`ebres et sont imit'es par l’effet de lumi`ere pour dessiner des paysages grotesques et des structures rocheuses spectaculaires qui surprennent le visiteur. Entrer dans la grotte des Verts, c’est sans aucun doute faire un voyage initiatique vers le centre de la terre.
