"Being a father of multiple kids, it's always the biggest guilt on me that I don't get to spend enough time with all my children, one 'cause I'm constantly working and two because I'm just spread thin," -- Nick Cannon.https://t.co/tzBgpdcY0V

Ukraine Holds Vidbir from Bomb Shelter, Chooses 2023 Eurovision Entry

Воскресенье, 18 Декабря 2022 г. 16:55 + в цитатник
Ukraine won Eurovision earlier this year, and would normally be the host country for the 2023 competition. However, due to the ongoing Russian invasion, the UK has stepped in and Eurovision will instead be held in Liverpool next year.

Ukraine still fully intends to be a part of Eurovision 2023! Vidbir is Ukraine's national competition that determines who they will send to Eurovision every year. This year, Vidbir was held in the Maidan Nezalezhnosti metro station/bomb shelter and broadcast live so the public could vote for their favourite performer.

Vidbir has just wrapped up, and Ukraine has chosen Tvorchi, a music duo from Ternopil, and their song "Heart of Steel" to represent them at Eurovision 2023. You can check it out below:

2Tone - "Kvitka" (Квiтка)

Angelina - Stronger

Tember Blanche - Ya vdoma (Я вдома)

OP Note: This is cute. This would have been my 3rd place pick.

Krutь - Kolyskova (Колискова)

Fiinka - Dovbush (Довбуш)

Jerry Heil - When God Shut the Door

Demchuk - Alive

OY Sound System - Oy, tuzhu (Ой, тужу)

OP Note: I LOVE THIS ONE! This would have been my pick, although it's not very Eurovision friendly lol.

Moisei - I'm Not Alone

OP Note: A violin BANGER! My 2nd place pick! Alexander Rybak WHO!?

James Cameron says he did a scientific study to prove Jack could not have survived in Titanic

Воскресенье, 18 Декабря 2022 г. 03:24 + в цитатник

During the press tour for "Avatar: The Way of Water", a reporter brought up Titanic's 25th anniversary being this December and asked James Cameron if he had regrets about letting Jack die?

Cameron replied that no he doesn't and Jack HAD to die. And to prove once and for all that both Rose and Jack couldn't have survived on their makeshift raft, they did a scientific study with stunt people wearing sensors and being submerged in ice water, proving that under the conditions, either Jack or Rose could survive, not both.

He says the scientific study will air as a special on Nat Geo this February along with the movie being aired on TV (on ABC, I guess) this Valentine's day to celebrate the film's 25th anniversary.

Brian Tyree Henry and Paul Dano for Actors on Actors

Воскресенье, 18 Декабря 2022 г. 00:44 + в цитатник

In their Actors on Actors conversation Paul Dano (The Fabelmans) and Bryan Tyree Henry (Causeway) discuss being known by three names and what it was like for Dano to play The Riddler in The Batman. Some light spoilers for each film in the talk, FYI.

  • This was the first time they met; both fans of each other's work.

  • Three name connection: Brian Tyree Henry always went by Brian Henry, but he had to add the middle name because there was already an actor called Brian Henry. He also goes by BTH. Paul Dano used to go by Paul Franklin Dano, but dropped the middle name so he could fit on a film poster at age 17.

  • On theater acting: BTH went to Morehouse - wasn't sure what he wanted to do, but knew he wanted to go there. He was in a business class he hated when his friends told him there was an audition for Antigone at Morehouse's sister school Spelman, so he left to do that and felt immediately at home. He was in the original Book of Mormon. Dano also loves stage acting.

  • On getting into character: BTH says that he has to relate to the characters that he plays, but he also has to be play them with precision so that he doesn't get lost in the characters. Dano talks about his character in The Fabelmans as being an inherently decent guy who can fix a lot of technological things, but can't fix his marriage.

  • On gray areas: Dano worked with writer Peter Craig on The Batman, and BTH asked him about that experience because he's going to work with Craig on the upcoming series Sinking Spring. Dano talks about The Riddler existing in a gray area, where he's not wrong about what's going on in the world, but is going about addressing it the wrong way.

Tech worker used AI to create children’s book, making authors and artists mad

Воскресенье, 18 Декабря 2022 г. 00:43 + в цитатник

A tech worker is selling a children's book he made using AI. Professional illustrators are pissed. https://t.co/7SRj7ntQej

— BuzzFeed News (@BuzzFeedNews) December 14, 2022

Ammaar Reshi, working at fintech company Brex, as design manager. Reshi began tinkering with AI tools and had the idea to make a book for kids, using AI. Using ChatGPT to create dialogue, he came up with a tale about Alice, a young girl who wants to learn about tech, and Sparkle, a robot who helps her.

He asked ChatGPT to make Alice curious and Sparkle self-aware. Reshi then used the AI app Midjourney to create the images he wanted. “I just started putting prompts like ‘young girl’ and descriptors: ‘blue eyes,’ ‘simple dress,’ ‘excited,’ ‘curious,’” and yielded some results.” He spent hours tweaking the prompts to get 13 images that fill the 14-page book.

Reshi uploaded it to Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing, on Dec. 4, just 72 hours after he first came up with the idea. Friends encouraged him to release more widely. But when Reshi posted about the book on Twitter, people, including children’s book illustrators, criticized him for automating the process at the expense of human creativity.

One critic is Anupa Roper, a children’s book author, said she had a “sinking feeling in the pit of [her] stomach,” when she saw Reshi’s tweet. “Is it really that easy to create something that I had to pour my heart and soul into?" Roper said. Other children’s authors are straight up refusing to download the book and are concerned that the use of AI in creating stories will create a proliferation of poor-quality stories, on the writing and illustration side.

Users have noticed that Alice and Sparkle has “quite a few anomalies” in the illustrations and worries that AI platforms are trained on other people’s work, an issue many artists have highlighted. “Artists are underpaid, and this won’t help them, their work is being stolen, basically.”

Children’s authors say the story is “formulaic” — a result of being produced by a computer program. Flat and boring. “Readers deserve rich, imaginative stories — children’s stories, especially. They serve to entertain and educate.”

Reshi said he didn’t anticipate the backlash and has received death threats and messages encouraging self-harm.

People are calling out double standards on Sam smith and Harry styles

Суббота, 17 Декабря 2022 г. 21:09 + в цитатник

People are calling out the double standards surrounding Sam Smith being mocked for wearing a shimmering jumpsuit just months after Harry Styles was celebrated for wearing a similar outfit. https://t.co/OfvWVBISnY

— BuzzFeed News (@BuzzFeedNews) December 15, 2022

On Saturday, Sam Smith performed at iHeartRadio's Jingle Ball, with special guest Kim Petras, their hit single “Unholy” while wearing a shimmering Valentino silver sequin jumpsuit with chunky black boots, a diamond necklace and pearl earrings. He was quickly made fun of relentlessly on social media for the ensemble.

But while some users online made fun of him some called out the double standards surrounding Sam being mocked for wearing a jumpsuit onstage just months after Harry Styles was celebrated for wearing a very similar outfit at Coachella with accusations of “queerphobia and bodyshaming”.

Harry has refused to publicly label his sexuality, but he has been romantically linked to several famous women, attracting attention with an androgynous style and the use of conventionally feminine clothing and makeup, adding queer baiting and pandering to the double standards between the two. With Harry outright denying to “sprinkling in nuggets of sexual ambiguity to try and be more interesting”.

But the differing treatment of Sam and Harry’s outfits seem to be reflective of not just their individual body types but also the way that people treat those who are openly queer. “Because one is plus-sized, queer, and femme. The other isn’t.” One user wrote: “Not to mention fat phobia going on the fact that he wears these stage fits and gets praised for fighting toxic masculinity and a gay icon meanwhile when an actual member of the LGBT community pulls up to the stage like this they get called names…"

Jen Shah (Real Housewives of Salt Lake City) asks judge for reduced sentence

Суббота, 17 Декабря 2022 г. 19:51 + в цитатник
221215210016-01-jen-shah-real-housewives

In July, Real Housewives of Salt Lake City cast member Jen Shah pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. As part of her plea deal, she had to forfeit $6.5 million in assets which were seized when the government executed a search warrant at her home in March 2021. The assets include a fox mink stole, high end jewelry, more than a dozen designer handbags (Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Versace), and more than 70 counterfeit Chanel, Dior, Fendi, and Hermes handbags. In addition, she must pay up to $9.5 million in restitution to the victims.

Prosecutors said that since 2012, Shah and others sold so-called “business services” to hundreds of alleged victims, including website design services to some elderly individuals who didn’t own computers. Prosecutors also alleged that Shah and others identified and sold the names of people they knew would be defrauded by others. US Attorney Damian Williams said Shah was a "key participant in a nationwide scheme that targeted elderly, vulnerable victims,” and made false promises of financial security to them.

The advisory guidelines for her conspiracy charge is a sentence of 11-14 years. The probation department has recommended a 6 year sentence. The prosecution is scheduled to submit their sentencing recommendation next week.

In preparation for her sentencing next month, Jen Shah submitted a four page letter to the judge (entitled "“How I got involved in the situation?”) asking for a 3 year sentence. She has requested to serve her sentence in Bryan, Texas. She also submitted 30 letters of support from her family and friends, but none of them were from her RHSLC castmates.

Her attorneys claim she wasn’t a “kingpin” of the telemarketing scheme and that her sentence should be lower than some of the other co-conspirators. They said she never had direct contact with the victims. In her letter to the judge, Shah says, "The terrible business decisions I made and professional relationships I developed stemmed from some personal painful experiences that I was going through in my life."
