4 medical innovations to expect in next 50 years

Среда, 01 Апреля 2020 г. 02:13 + в цитатник

Nowadays, medicine is rapidly developing, and specialists are looking for innovative ways to combat various diseases. The past century has seen many unique discoveries in this field: humanity has eradicated smallpox and has mastered organ transplantation.

There is still a long way ahead for the scientists to achieve new medical breakthroughs. The latest technologies in medicine make it possible to save thousands of lives daily. In our photo gallery, read about 4 medical advances to look forward to in the next 50 years.

Saving premature babies
According to statistics, only 10% of infants in the US are born premature. By contrast in Russia, the number of preterm delivery and newborn mortality is much higher. Medical specialists around the world are working on the solution to tackle this problem and improve the sad statistics.
In 2017, scientists from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia created an artificial womb to support the development of early born lambs. As the research results showed, the fetus located inside the artificial uterus for 4 weeks displayed positive changes. In the future, these technologies can be applied to premature babies.

Reducing the shortage of donor organs
Currently, there is an acute shortage of donor organs all over the world which is also a reason for increased mortality. To solve this problem, scientists are trying to grow human organs within the pig’s embryos. These animals have organs similar to humans in size and shape. Besides, pig’s organs develop faster than the human ones. At the same time, it is very difficult for cells of one species to take root in another species organism.
In 2016, scientists managed to grow human stem cells inside a pig embryo. This achievement became a real breakthrough in medicine.

Repairing damaged organs with plants
Recently, scientists from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts made a breakthrough step in modern medicine. A team of specialists managed to grow blood vessels from spinach leaves that were able to transport water. After that, the plant cells were replaced with muscle cells from the human heart. In this way, it enabled the plant veins to pump water as they would do it in the real heart.
This discovery gives hope that in the nearest future it will be possible to treat damaged organs with plants, from spinach to broccoli, instead of transplanting them.

Regeneration
Regeneration of the living tissue is another ambitious goal of modern medicine. Every year, 185 thousand amputations are carried out in the United States. The field of prosthetics is rapidly developing now which allows people to use nano-technological prostheses that fully replace the lost limb.
However, scientists want to take a step further. In particular, they have paid special attention to animals, such as axolotl, with the ability to regenerate new parts of their body, including limbs, lungs, and even eyes. Scientists have already identified the genes responsible for regeneration ability in these animals. Perhaps, one day it will be possible to create a medicine that stimulates tissue growth in humans.

Oil prices rise as US ramps up economic stimulus measures

Вторник, 31 Марта 2020 г. 02:32 + в цитатник

As the coronavirus pandemic is cutting the demand for oil and the standoff between Saudi Arabia and Russia continues, the United States decided to step in to save the situation. Washington announced an unprecedented array of programs to backstop the economy reeling from the virus outbreak. In an effort to prevent economic devastation, the White House rolled out a $2 trillion relief package. The mere announcement was enough for the quotes to advance. The market sentiment turned out to be more than optimistic about the stimulus measures. Oil prices rose by almost 3 percent and then went down slightly but still settled at a higher level. In addition, President Donald Trump’s comments on the “too strong dollar” also supported the markets with dollar-denominated commodities. “Oil is clawing its way higher, mainly on the back of the weaker dollar that stemmed from the Fed’s unprecedented measures. WTI crude volatility will remain high and traders should not be surprised if this rally eventually gets faded,” Edward Moya, a market analyst, commented on the situation. Still, the overall outlook for crude demand remains low due to halted production and transport restrictions in many countries. Those who wanted to buy cheap oil have already snapped it up and filled their tanks to the maximum.

7 most expensive scientific documents

Вторник, 31 Марта 2020 г. 02:23 + в цитатник

Many of the most important scientific documents are of great interest not only for scientists but also for antiquarians. The latter does not spare money when it comes to buying the most valuable ones. Sometimes their desire to become the owner of a historical object outweighs the common sense. They pay astronomical sums of money for such artifacts. In this article, you will find 7 scientific documents that cost a fortune.

Codex Leicester, Leonardo da Vinci
The document, consisting of 18 sheets of paper and forming a 72-page notebook, is a set of scientific notes made from 1506 to 1510. The notes of the legendary scientist were devoted to various natural phenomena. The pages of the manuscript were written in Leonardo’s distinctive mirror writing. The notebook comprises a large number of mathematical calculations, diagrams, and drawings. It was named after the Earl of Leicester who bought the manuscript in 1717. After being exhibited in all museums around the world, since 2003, the document is located in the Seattle Art Museum. Its price is $30, 802, 500.

Birds of America, John James Audubon
The American naturalist's book, printed from 1827 to 1838, is replete with life-size illustrations of rare species of birds in the United States. Six species are now extinct. The first edition is considered a masterpiece of bookmaking and bibliographic rarity. In 1807, the text of the Ornithological biography was published in five volumes. This book is unique thanks to the highest quality and accuracy of illustrations. Engravings half the size of a man were hand-painted. So, it is no wonder that the price of this book is $11, 570, 496.

Theory of relativity, Albert Einstein
One of the most important discoveries in physics, the theory of relativity, was introduced by Albert Einstein at the beginning of the 20th century. This breakthrough enabled the physicists to address many scientific issues. The theory of relativity radically changed the way the scientists comprehended the space-time concept. Later, Einstein's theory was confirmed by numerous experiments and studies. The cost of the document written in 1905 and completed in 1943 is estimated at $6, 500, 000.

Francis Crick's letter deciphering structure of DNA
British physicist Francis Crick (1916-2004) gave up his work at the age of 31 and devoted himself to studying biology. Six years later, his hard work was rewarded: the scientist made a breakthrough in genetics. Teamed up with other scientists, he deciphered the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). In March 1953, Francis Crick wrote a letter to his twelve-year-old son, Michael, where he outlined the essence of the greatest discovery of our time. Now, this letter costs $6, 059, 750.

Cosmography, Claudius Ptolemy
The atlas of Claudius Ptolemy (circa 100-170 AD), a Greek-Egyptian writer, mathematician, astronomer, geographer, and poet, was highly praised by his contemporaries. The atlas, created around 150 AD, was translated into Arabic in the 9th century and into Latin in 1406. It is considered the world's first printed atlas available to the public since 1477. There are only 31 copies of this book in the world. This copy, as part of the library of Lord Wardington, was sold at Sotheby's auction in 2006. Its price totaled $3, 966, 804.

Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, Isaac Newton
The manuscript of the work of the famous scientist was published in 1687. Some reputable scientists believe that Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica was the apogee of the scientific revolution. Later Newton’s work became a turning point in modern physics as it provided a lot of mathematical explanations of gravity and motion. The book was evaluated at $3, 719, 500.

Portolan atlas of the world, Battista Agnese
Scientists highly appreciate the work of the leading cartographer of the 16th century from the Republic of Genoa who lived in the Republic of Venice. Battista Agnese was the first cartographer who graphically embodied the discoveries of travelers Marcos de Niza and Francisco de Ulloa. This document is one of the 72 surviving manuscript Portolan atlases created in the workshop of Battista Agnes in 1546. The cost of atlases amounts to $2, 770, 500.

World economy on verge of recession

Понедельник, 30 Марта 2020 г. 05:40 + в цитатник

The largest global financial institutions are revising their outlooks for the current year due to the coronavirus outbreak. Another gloomy forecast has been presented by the International Monetary Fund. “The economic impact is and will be severe,” IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said. This short quote from her speech accurately conveys the Fund's global growth forecast. The IMF expects negative growth rates and “a recession at least as bad as during the global financial crisis or worse.” However, its impact will hardly be long-lasting. Georgieva hopes for a recovery in 2021. Much will depend on how soon the pandemic comes to an end. Coronavirus is not the only major challenge to the global economy. The oil standoff between Saudi Arabia and Russia, trade wars, and sanctions - all this is slowing down the pace of economic development. According to the Institute of International Finance (IIF), the global economic growth in 2020 will be 0.4 percent. Besides, some experts argue that the economies of such countries as the United States and Japan as well as the euro area accounting for one third of global GDP have already plunged into recession.

Top 5 major cybersecurity threats in 2020

Понедельник, 30 Марта 2020 г. 02:26 + в цитатник

Cyber analysts do not need a crystal ball to predict that in 2020 cybersecurity attacks will accelerate and malware will only improve. The cyber landscape is changing as well as technology. This is why cybersecurity is given such a high priority in many states around the globe as its main aim is to protect personal data and the rights and freedom of citizens.

Experts at Forbes pointed out the top 5 cyber risks in 2020 that everyone should be aware of.

1. AI to become weapon in hands of cybercriminals
In the next few years, criminal groups, terrorist organizations and all those who want to join the arms race bypassing governments will do everything possible to get their hands on AI hardware assistants.
Therefore, the struggle between hackers and cybersecurity specialists may reach full-throttle in 2020. While cybercriminals are trying to figure out how to steal data, cybersecurity experts are doing their best to identify the crime before it is committed.

2. Cyber threats to increase amid conflict between West and East
The Internet mirrors everything that happens in the economic and political arenas. Via the Internet, people distribute information and different ideas, sometimes radical, sometimes fake, at the speed of light. Cybercrimes blossom in the periods of political and economic uncertainty.
For this reason, corporations, retail chains, and associations that are legal entities are required to comply with national laws so that trade wars between superpowers do not lead to the collapse of international organizations such as the EU, the UN, and so on.

3. Cyber attacks on government to surge
Experts assume that the race that started just before the election of the 46th US President will be remembered around the world for numerous and large-scale public disinformation campaigns.
Cybercriminals will not confine themselves with fake news, defaming the candidates. They will also attack the infrastructure that is used in election campaigns.

4. Lack of cybersecurity professionals to cause more havoc
Nowadays, the shortage of skilled security professionals alarms the world society. If in 2014, the number of vacancies in this area amounted to 1 million, in 2020, it will exceed 3.5 million.
At the same time, cybersecurity directly affects the information security of ordinary citizens, private companies, government agencies, and even entire states.
Experts believe that the lack of such specialists is mostly due to the high financial costs of their training.

5. Cyber attacks on vehicle infrastructure to grow
With the development of remote car control technologies, the threat of hacker attacks on personal data databases, which include not only email addresses but also bank accounts, is higher than ever.
Hackers can also gain control of digital devices in driverless cars. Besides, they have already succeeded in hacking private networks through home appliances and smart devices and then selling large amounts of private data to the black market.
This is why such risks must be addressed at the legislative level. Car manufacturers should also pay more attention to the security of future driverless cars. Additionally, they should take legal responsibility for car protection from cyber culprits.

RUB gets stuck at historic lows for long

Пятница, 27 Марта 2020 г. 05:05 + в цитатник

The severe downturn in the global oil market has dealt a blow to commodity currencies, including the Russian ruble. Day after day, both oil quotes and commodity currencies are plumbing new depths. A few days ago, energy investors were appalled that Brent crude had plummeted below $30 a barrel. Analysts assumed that oil prices had reached the bottom. In fact, crude oil took a deeper nosedive. Both benchmark oil grades slumped to the lowest levels since 2003. Nothing boded ill, so the oil war between Saudi Arabia and Russia caught investors completely off-guard. The coronavirus outbreak scaled down global demand for crude oil. Thus, energy investors were full of hopes that the largest oil producers would support price stability and at least extend the ongoing oil production pact. However, the hopes were battered. Russia rejected Saudi Arabia’s proposal for deeper oil output cuts to offset the collapse in demand. Moreover, Russia withdrew abruptly from the deal. In response, oil prices went into a tailspin. At present, Brent crude is trading firmly below 25 US dollars a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate is hovering at near 21 US dollars. The Russian Urals has got stuck below 19 US dollars. In this context, the Russian ruble does not stand a chance to regain footing. On the back of extremely low oil prices, Moscow is not interested in the firm national currency. On the contrary, the monetary authorities have sent the ruble into a nosedive which is under control. The forex ruble’s rate tumbled to 82.77 against the US dollar and 90.10 against the euro for the first time since February 2016.

Most famous and deadliest outbreaks of 21st century

Пятница, 27 Марта 2020 г. 02:11 + в цитатник

The COVID-19 coronavirus infection caused by the 2019-nCoV has received the widest coverage in the media. It is rapidly spreading around the globe and the list of countries where cases of the previously unknown virus have been recorded is extending every day. However, humanity has seen several awful epidemics that left a huge trail in history.

Find out the most dangerous diseases with a newly emerging pathogen that have shaken the world over the past 20 years in our photo gallery

SARS
Severe Acute Respiratory Disease (SARS), caused by the SARS coronavirus, broke out in November 2002 in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong.
Originally, the virus was circulating in Chinese populations of civets and bats. The killer strain that arose from these animals spread to 37 countries. Overall, the SARS virus claimed the lives of 916 people.
Italian virologist Carlo Urbani, who later also died from the disease, played a leading role in organizing prompt quarantine measures that saved the lives of many people.

Avian flu
Avian flu is a disease that causes a pestilence of domestic poultry such as chickens, ducks, and geese. Notably, this virus has been mentioned since the XIX century under various names.
The causative agent of the dangerous virus in 2007 was a highly pathogenic strain H5N1. The contagious virus came from China where it was circulating among various species of birds and animals. Fortunately, there were not too many cases of the infection since the virus is thought to spread mainly from birds to humans, not person-to-person. However, in 60% of cases, people died from avian flu.
The last lethal outcome was recorded in 2014.

Swine flu
Swine flu is one of the many subtypes of the H1N1 influenza virus. Pigs are the principal hosts of the classic swine influenza virus.
First cases of the infection occurred in 2009 in Mexico City and within 3 months, the A/H1N1 virus had spread to a total of 74 countries and regions. A great number of animals had been slaughtered but the virus mutated and crossed the interspecies barrier.
In severe cases, swine flu led to a lethal outcome. Thanks to the global vaccination measures taken at the end of the summer of 2010, the epidemic was stopped. The last A/H1N1 outbreak was reported in 2015.

MERS
The Middle East respiratory syndrome also belongs to coronaviruses. It can be detected only by laboratory testing.
MERS appeared in Saudi Arabia in 2012. Unlike other flu strains, it is a highly dangerous virus because it leads to death in more than 30% of cases.
Scientists are still unable to determine what exactly caused the mutation of the virus and under what circumstances. Although there is a hypothesis that camels may be the primary source of infection for humans.
People sometimes get infected by the disease but the virus has no known cure. Therefore, clinical trials of the vaccine are underway.

Ebola
In 2014, Ebola swept through the countries of West Africa, becoming the largest epidemic in the region. Curiously enough, the pathogens of hemorrhagic fever are five viruses transmitted by bats and monkeys.
The symptoms of fever are very severe: weakness, headache, abdominal pain, bleeding from the mucous membranes, and dehydration.
In the 1970s, the fatality reached 90%. Nowadays it is significantly lower but there is no vaccine that has been successfully tested on humans. The Ebola outbreak eased in December 2015. According to the World Health Organization, it claimed the lives of more than 22 thousand people.

Fed unveils new measures to support debt markets

Четверг, 26 Марта 2020 г. 05:08 + в цитатник

In an effort to contain mounting economic and financial-market fallout from the coronavirus, the US Federal Reserve unveiled a sweeping series of unprecedented measures involving unlimited purchases of US Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities. The Fed also intends to launch an array of major programs aimed at preventing the US economy from collapsing.

Economists characterize these desperate measures taken by the regulator as an extraordinary backstop to ensure the smooth functioning of the market amid the coronavirus epidemic.

The expanded asset purchase program launched by the Federal Reserve is expected to help most national enterprises stay afloat during this challenging period. In addition, the regulator prepared a new lending program worth $300 billion and a loan fund secured by fixed assets to help giant corporations affected by the virus outbreak. Notably, such steps are usually taken only in the financial crisis.

Besides, the Fed stepped in to support the US corporate and municipal bond markets. Last week, the regulator emphasized that the purchase of Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities would be unlimited. Later, the Central Bank announced it would buy $375 billion in Treasury bonds and $250 billion in mortgage-backed securities.

The Fed believes that these emergency measures will help citizens and businesses affected by the coronavirus epidemic as well as shield the economy. Moreover, the regulator is confident that serious efforts taken by the government will reduce layoffs and minimize losses in income.
