Gazprom fails to reach $1 trln market cap |
According to Alexey Miller, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors, Gazprom was about to become the first company in the world to hit a market cap worth 1 trillion dollars. Pledges to become the most valuable corporation have been unfulfilled. Meanwhile, the company leads the rating among Russian rivals.
Gazprom overtook Sberbank and finally got the first place in market value. The capitalization of Gazprom at the Moscow stock exchange reached 5,234 trillion rubles surpassing Sberbank with its its value of 5.234 trillion rubles. Soaring financial figures turned out to be possible due to considerable growth in the price of Gazprom's shares in recent weeks amid news on changes in dividend policy of the company.
On the global scale, the picture is bleak. Russian energy giant Gazprom costs twice less than McDonalds or Starbucks. Gazprom failed to enter the race of trillionaires such as Amazon, Microsoft or Apple. Statistics figures say the opposite despite all positive reports on revenue growth and benefits of western sanctions. The company reached the value of 360 billion dollars when Alexey Miller made his ambitious pledges, but at present its market cap is under 85 billion dollars. What a shame!

People take to streets in France in protest at Macron's labour law reforms |
Mass protests of motorists in the country continues since Saturday. They are called "Yellow Vests". The protests were caused by the decision of the authorities to increase taxes on fuel in 2019. It is known that one person died, at least 400 were injured. Read in our article what is happening in the country.
Nearly 300 thousand Frenchmen took part in strikes against against planned hikes in gas taxes. Protests rage on across France: in Marseille, Toulouse, on the Paris ring road, in Normandy, Brittany and other regions. In total, at least 2,000 protests were recorded. The French Interior Ministry noted the aggressive mood of the protesters, there were fights and knife wounds.
At a blockade in the southeastern department of Savoie, a driver panicked when protesters surrounded her car and she accelerated, hitting and killing a female demonstrator.
Police called the rallies illegal, over the weekend 282 people were detained. President Emmanuel Macron does not intend to abandon this idea, despite his low rating.
In 2019, according to the plans of the government, the tax on diesel fuel will increase by 6.5%, for gasoline - by 2.9%. This is how the authorities intend to fight the pollution of the atmosphere.
Radio RFI notes that over the past year, gasoline prices have risen by 10-15%.
Diesel fuel, which is now the most popular in the country, has risen in price by 24%. Now the cost of a liter often exceeds €1.6. The national average cost of a liter of petrol SP-95 (approximate analogue of AI-95) and diesel fuel is estimated at €1.48.
It is noteworthy that protesters do not have a single coordination center, as it usually happens. The movement was organized spontaneously, and participants communicated through social networks. Therefore, it was difficult to understand where and in what quantity they would gather, law enforcement agencies said. This circumstance made it difficult to take measures to control the situation.
The French media called Priscilla Ludovski one of the main participants of the "Yellow Vests". An entrepreneur from the north of the country appealed to the authorities to lower fuel prices. Her appeal has collected more than 750 thousand signatures. “You can’t demand that people stop using their cars and take out a loan to buy electric cars the next day,” she wrote.
Against the background of Macron's large-scale transformations, his ratings are falling. According to a survey prepared by YouGov for the publication of the Huffington Post, 21% of the French positively evaluate the activities of the head of the republic. Negative attitude towards Macron was recorded among 61% of respondents. This is a record high for the year and a half of his presidency.
In an interview with CNN, Macron explained that reforms, despite the fact that they are not the most popular, are necessary for the country: “I was elected because all my predecessors either could not carry out these reforms or did not even try to carry them out. I am convinced that in the end the French will gradually become aware of the meaning of what we are doing. ”
Street protests are not the only threat to the French president. There are also upcoming elections to the European Parliament, scheduled for May 2019. The French can use this event as an opportunity to express their protest again actions of the authorities. As a result, the ultra-right parties may increase their representation in the European Parliament in the next elections which will hit Macron's plans.

Italy facing huge fine due to abnormal public debt |
Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini admitted that the country could have to pay a hefty fine of €3 billion. The European Commission might resort to this measure because Italy’s government does not comply with the EU budget requirements which restrict the level of a public debt. Apart from the heavy fine, the EU authorities could request Italy to raise taxes from September 2019 aiming to generate €20 billion. Experts say that Rome’s failure to cap the level of the state debt forced the European Commission into this tough measure. At present, Italy’s public debt totals nearly 132% of its gross domestic product. Such an elevated level would cause troubles in case the central bank dares to raise interest rates.
Besides, Italy’s government is facing a challenge of tackling budget deficit. Rome was keen to urge the EU authorities to approve it at 2.4% of GDP for this year. However, Rome had to obey the directive from the European Commission and nailed down the deficit level at 2.04%. Brussels predicts that Italy’s budget deficit could swell to 3.5% of its GDP that is likely to spark off a conflict between Italy and the EU authorities. A lot of analysts do not agree with Brussels’ decision to penalize the country which is going through financial troubles. Indeed, Italy’s government will have to pay the fine at the expense of the state budget. Alternatively, it could search for money in the debt market that will make things worse.
Meanwhile, yields of Italy’s government bonds benefited from the recent developments. The yield curve climbed sharply. On the flip side, Italy’s stocks slumped over 1%, thus pushing other European stock markets down. Yields of Italy’s government bonds jumped 7-10 basis points. Yields of the benchmark 10-year bonds hit a one-week high of 2.726%, having recorded the strongest two-day rally since early January of this year.

Five options for preventing climate disaster from Bill Gates |
Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, is committed to solving global problems such as climate change. He does not believe that renewable sources of energy - solar panels and wind turbines - will help our planet. B. Gates stresses that in order to prevent warming, breakthroughs in the production of goods, the cultivation of food, and not only in new forms of energy are necessary. In order to meet the challenge, we need to focus on five important tasks that can positively affect the environment.
The creator of the world famous company Microsoft, billionaire Bill Gates is actively engaged in educational activities, creativity, and charity. On his blog, B. Gates appealed to all who are concerned about natural disasters and climate change. He believes that there is no definite way to solve this problem. The head of Microsoft suggests five solutions to the difficulties facing humanity.
Use of electricity
According to experts, electricity is considered to be the main source of greenhouse gas emissions in the world. It accounts for almost a quarter of global emissions. However, 75% of greenhouse gases come from other sources. Analysts believe that the negative impact of electricity can be minimized. Bill Gates agrees with this and considers that the world requires not only renewable sources of energy.
Sensible farming
The agricultural industry accounts for about 24% of greenhouse gas emissions. Their main source is cattle, which produces largeamounts of carbon dioxide. Other elements of agriculture also harm the environment. These include nitrogen fertilizers, the use of which results in emissions of nitrogen oxide, a greenhouse gas that is 300 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. This year, B. Gates has donated millions of dollars to the project aimed at developing genetically modified bacteria that can solve this problem.
Changes in industry
Industrial production is also considered to be one of the main environmental pollutants. It accounts for about 21% of the total greenhouse gas emissions. For example, carbon dioxide isproduced by burning substances for steel or cement production, and the level of harmful emissions reaches an inconceivable scale. According to experts, the increase in greenhouse gas emissions is largely due to plastic, by which the global ocean is polluted.
Use of environmentally-friendly modes of transport
According to analysts, transport accounts for at least 14% of the total level of all harmful emissions. New biofuel-based cars aimed at addressing this issue are currently being created. The problem also cuts across other modes of transport, such as airplanes and cargo ships. For example, the emission level in the shipping industry reaches a summary measure of Germany and the UK.
Construction of new buildings
The problem of pollution can be solved by constructing new types of housing. Any construction accounts for 6% of the total emissions. Scientists predict that this figure will increase sincemost people move to cities, and this requires the construction of new houses. Buildings have energu consuming appliances. These devices emit greenhouse gases, hydrochlorofluorocarbon. In order to solve the problem, the head of Microsoft suggests the use of energy-saving windows and insulation systems.

Turkey loses interest in access to EU |
The previous Turkey’s government used to put a high priority on the country’s entry into the EU. However, the new government with the strongman at the helm is not eager to search for allies and make concessions in the struggle for the EU membership. In this context, both sides admit that the talks on this issue have come into gridlock. Meanwhile, Turkey’s application for the EU membership remains valid. In fact, the country makes no efforts to enter the EU. Policymakers from the European Commission think that Turkey’s authorities do not push ahead with its access and even neglect fundamental principles of the EU. “Turkey is a key partner for the EU and a candidate country. Dialogue and cooperation, including at highest level, in essential areas of joint interest have continued, including through effective cooperation on migration and support to refugees,” the European Commission stated in the press release.
Experts are wondering whether Ankara is determined to carry on with its stubborn standoff with the EU. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is pursuing a hardline policy aiming to supervise all government agencies, the central bank, public opinion, and any incidents of people’s discontent. “Turkey has continued to move further away from the European Union, with serious backsliding in the areas of the rule of law and fundamental rights and through the weakening of effective checks and balances in the political system, brought forward by the entry into force of the constitutional amendment. In June 2018 the Council noted unanimously that Turkey's accession negotiations have therefore effectively come to a standstill and no further chapters can be considered for opening or closing. The underlying facts leading to this assessment still hold,” the EU officials made a conclusion.

Innovative technologies for smart home |
In the future, which becomes a reality, leadership in organizing a comfortable living space will belong to innovative technologies. A huge role will be played by the "stuffing" of the so-called smart home intended for the convenience of the residents of megacities.
The modern world is full of surprises which every day are presented by the innovative sphere of high technologies. In the near future, people will live in smart dwellings, where innovative technologies will be responsible for the creation of a comfortable environment. Important steps in this direction have already been taken.
Smart bedrooms
Many scientists are concerned about the problem of sleep which adversely affects the health of residents of megacities. This year, the Sleepace Chinese company developed the Dreamlife technology, the project of a smart bedroom. It consists of sensors built into the bed which collect data on the user's sleep and analyze them. Based on them devices work: curtains close, the light turns off, the temperature and humidity of the air optimize. According to experts, the number of people using technology for sleep will double in 2019, and by 2025 it will reach 20% of all households in the world.
Printed furniture
According to the forecasts of Allied Market Research experts, by 2020 the capitalization of the world market of 3D printing will reach $8.6 billion, and by 2022 the volume of this market will amount to $33.6 billion. The possibility of re-using 3D materials to create new items will be a huge advantage. Currently, 3D printing of interior elements is gaining momentum. Due to the high cost and slow production speed, 3D printing has not yet entered the mass market, but in the near future it will reach these heights, experts believe.
Independent walls
At the moment, scientists are looking for technologies that can extend the life cycle of concrete structures. Microbiologist Hank Jonkers at the Delft University of Technology proposed the technology of self-healing concrete, Basilisk. Its essence is that the bacterium producing calcite (limestone) is evenly distributed in concrete and fills the cracks when it is filled with water. In addition to reducing the cost of repairs, smart concrete can significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions, experts say.
Smart windows
According to Freedonia Group, by 2020, more than 8.3 billion square meters of glass will be installed in new buildings. Scientists are trying to give them the function of solar panels reducing the cost of electricity. In 2017, researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the US Energy Ministry managed to create a glass that darkens when heated from the sun reducing the proportion of transmitted light in the visible spectrum from 68% to 3% and also produces electricity. Developers have so far achieved transparency of the windows at a level of 30% which is comparable to sunglasses.
Smart kitchen
According to experts, about 1.3 billion tons of food are thrown out every year. The problem was solved by manufacturers of household appliances, Whirlpool. The company acquired Yummly, a platform for culinary recommendations. By the end of the year, the application will be able to make delivery orders, offer recipes depending on the contents of the refrigerator, etc. Previously, Whirlpool offered "kitchens of the future", where the surfaces can work as a heating element, and storage containers can track the quantity and freshness of products. Based on these data, recipes are offered.

China’s industrial profits drop |
Last month, China’s industrial profits posted a significant decline. Experts believe that it was caused by a slowdown in manufacturing activity. As a result, Beijing had to boost pro-growth measures to stabilize the economy hit by the trade dispute with the US.
Industrial profit growth has decelerated since November 2018, analysts emphasize. In April of 2019, revenues went down by 3.7 percent to 515.4 billion yuan ($74.8 billion) on a yearly basis. According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the indicator increased only in March this year reaching 13.9 percent. NBS representative Zhu Hong said that the March results had benefited from companies actively buying industrial goods. However, a decrease in sales in April of 2019 greatly affected earnings.
For the first four months of the year, overall industrial profits fell by 3.4 percent to 1.81 trillion yuan, compared to the same period of 2018. The indicator dropped to 3.3 percent in the first quarter of 2019. In the period from January to April of 2019, profits in telecommunications and electronic equipment manufacturing, which are the most vulnerable to US tariffs, declined by 15.3 percent. Experts note that only Chinese extraction sectors showed strong increases.
Beijing has beefed up countermeasures to support national manufacturers in response to slowing economic growth and higher tariffs imposed by the US. Special attention was given to companies experiencing financial difficulties. Besides, Chinese authorities pledged to lower taxes and increase infrastructure spendings. China’s central bank also announced a cut in the reserve requirement ratio for regional banks. These measures are expected to considerably support the country’s economy.

US-China trade war could cost global economy $600 billion |
Whoever wins the bitter trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies – the US or China – the consequences will extend far beyond and can eliminate up to $600 billion, according to a Bloomberg forecast. Similar losses are expected in 2021. This year will be the climax of the consequences of the trade conflict, experts believe.
Some analysts anticipate that by 2021, the US GDP will lose 0.5%, and the Chinese economy will sink by 0.8% because of the trade war. If the trade conflict unfolds further, a collapse in the stock markets by at least 10% is highly likely, analysts emphasize. As a result, the GDP losses will amount to an additional 0.1% for each of the parties.
The worst blows from a drop in China’s exports to the US would fall on Taiwan, South Korea, and Malaysia, Bloomberg economist Maeva Cousin noted. Such industries as energy and metal production will be undermined. What’s more, the US-China conflict will affect the most overvalued currencies, including the Chinese yuan, the Thai baht, and the Canadian dollar.
According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the rise in commodity prices will cost the average American $211. In addition, the Americans will lose another $620 due to lower productivity in the economy. Last year, trade disagreements with China cost the American citizens almost half as much - $414, the Fed pointed out.

Google's 5 biggest failures |
In September, the famous Google search engine celebrated the 20th anniversary. The company has experienced many ups and downs on the road to success. But if its victories are well known to all, the history is silent about the failures of this company. In our photo gallery, you will find the most failed projects and disputable decisions of the IT giant from the Silicon Valley.
Total surveillance
In August, Associated Press' journalists published the results of an investigation that said that Google's controlled services, such as Google Maps, spied on their users. The story became more scandalous because of the fact that surveillance continues, even if the owner of the smartphone has disabled this feature.
Google keeps daily logs about the movement of a person, and it is a threat to privacy.
The company itself acknowledged that it retains data about users, claiming that it makes it just to "improve the user experience."
The company made changes to the use of the Location History. According to the new policy point, turning off the Location History function does not affect the geolocation in other services of the company, for example, in Google Maps.
Thus, the IT giant had no effect on the situation but secured itself by changing the rules for using the function.
Discrimination against white men
Last year, a huge sexist scandal shook Google. Software engineer James Damore compiled a 10-page manifesto asserting that the current policy of recruiting women and people of different ethnic origins is erroneous. Damore explained the unsuccessfulness of women in the field of IT with biological characteristics and, in addition, stated that women hold managerial positions not because of their merits, but because they are a "minority".
"We need to stop assuming that gender gaps imply sexism," the author of the letter said.
The management of Google did not take sufficient care in motives of Damore and dismissed him for violating corporate ethics.
Now Damore is trying to sue his former employer, accusing him of illegal dismissal.
Glasses ahead of time
In 2013, the company started testing of Google Glass, which were supposed to bring augmented reality (AR) to the broad masses. But this project has remained one of the most disastrous in the history of the company. Firstly, the public was presented with a shoddy prototype, since co-founder of Google Sergey Brin wanted to know about the community's reaction to the new gadget as soon as possible. As a result, a bright presentation of the device could not convince skeptics and there was a large number of negative reviews: the appearance did not greatly suit the owners, as well as autonomy, and, in addition, glasses were overheating.
There is a version that Google Glasses appeared on the market before it was ready to introduce augmented reality into everyday life. However, even now this technology is not in high demand.
War with Trump
In late August 2018, US President Donald Trump criticized Google, advising companies to "be more careful" from now on. The American leader believes that Google deliberately shows only negative news about him, supporting liberal media and drowning out "right" publications.
The company, in turn, denies any political bias. This same opinion is shared by some IT experts who argue that Google's algorithms are insensitive to the political agenda. Nevertheless, the company is now under the close attention of Trump.
Abuse of power
Google has set two anti-records for penalties from the European Commission. Last summer, the company was fined €2.4 billion, which became the largest penalty in the history of the European Commission. The reason for this was the abuse of the position to promote its service with purchases: allegedly Google artificially dropped the sites of competitors in search results.
A year later, this record was beaten: Google received a fine almost twice as much as the previous one, €4.3 billion, for violating the antimonopoly legislation. This time the company was accused of using "anti-competitive practices" that were aimed at promoting the Android operating system, which already holds a dominant position in the mobile operating system market.

Venezuela suffers massive losses amid US sanctions |
Some countries toy with the idea that sanctions can bolster economic development. But sometimes sanctions are not useful at all. On the one hand, a government has a reason for taking a harsh stance towards the villain that imposes restrictions, but on the other hand, the sanctioned countries may suffer from a shortage of financing. The independence can cost too much.
The above description can be applied to the relations between the United States and Venezuela. Nicolas Maduro keeps on chanting catchy slogans, while the domestic economy is on the verge of collapse. Surprisingly, the citizens of the country have conflicting opinions on this matter. Some of them support the fight against the oppressing foreign policy of the United States, while others are discontent with severe damages to the economy and wish the sanctions were lifted. Venezuelan ambassador to Moscow Carlos Rafael Faria Tortosa said that the economic blockade had already caused losses of 130 billion dollars. The unwise policy of the dictator has led the country to international isolation. The Venezuelan accounts were blocked in over 40 banks in 17 countries, while the local oil producers were banned from the global market. In turn, Venezuela retaliated by refusing to use the Visa and MasterCard payment systems. However, such a move is controversial. Who suffered the most from it: the global community or the citizens of the country? The opposition proclaimed that Maduro usurped authority, while President of the National Assembly Juan Guaido declared himself to be the interim president. His candidacy was approved by the opposition, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and most of the EU countries. At the same time, Russia, China, Turkey, Bolivia, and Cuba support Maduro.

Five ways to increase your salary |
There are two main ways to improve your well-being: spend less or earn more. In order to cope with financial difficulties faster, it is better to use both methods at once. But no matter how effective reasonable planning and forced savings are, you can hardly get rich by getting $300 a month. In our review, there are several easy ways to increase your income.
Sometimes an excellent specialist works for years and wonders why his salary does not match the experience and qualifications, but does not take any actions to change the situation. Sounds familiar? We offer a few simple tips on how always be appreciated.
These tips are best suited for medium and large commercial organizations. The principles for raising wages in state-owned enterprises and small companies are often unpredictable and devoid of any logic.
Evaluate yourself
A person with good self-esteem will not do hard work for a small amount of money for a long time, because he knows that he is “worthy of more”.
Look at your work. Do you like it? Are you a good specialist? Do you add value to this company? Will it be difficult to replace you? Do you want to further improve your professional skills? Are you satisfied with your salary? If the majority of answers (except for the last one) is positive, most likely, you just need a pay rise.
Decide for yourself how much money you should be paid. Set a goal and move towards it.
Say your goals aloud
If your work is worth more than what you get for it, go to the management and say it. As long as the employee does not ask, the manager will not be in a hurry to raise the salary.
In addition to money, discuss plans and career prospects with your superiors. It is possible that you have already “outgrown” your position and can take on more serious projects, and perhaps your vision does not coincide with the views of the leadership, and you should immediately clarify the situation in order not to waste time on useless cooperation.
More benefits, more vitamins!
Maybe you are a good specialist, but the company does not receive significant benefits from this. For example, your knowledge of five languages is useless to conduct negotiations within the country.
The main thing is to help the company to become more successful, to enter new territories, and to improve current activities. Suggest your own development plan. If you help the company make more money, your bosses will gladly increase your personal income.
Wind of change
Sometimes the company does not know how to change or does not want to, so there will be no changes for you too. In such situation, you should take a vacation, find all the vacancies that suit you and send out your resume. Perhaps a dream job has been waiting for you for a long time.
If you received a good offer, but you are in doubt, tell your boss about it. He can do everything in his power to persuade you not to leave the company.
Develop yourself
Maybe right now you do not deserve a lot of money, or the modern labor market cannot offer them to you. Do not be discouraged, you should not give up. On the contrary, continue efforts. Expand your horizons, discover new superpowers.
Find a way to increase your value: engage in self-education, attend master classes, and meet people you respect. Set goals, say them aloud and work to achieve them. If, despite all your efforts, attractive employers ignore you, start your own business.
