Turkey’s lira crisis |
Trump administration imposed financial sanctions on Turkey. Turkish lira hit a record low following the rapid depreciation of the Russian ruble.
Erdogan's tightened grip on power caused a significant fall in the lira’s exchange rate. Trump’s decision to authorize a doubling of duties on aluminum and steel imported from Turkey, making them 20 percent and 50 percent respectively, was enough to collapse the currency. His Twitter post just sped up the lira's depreciation. “I have just authorized a doubling of Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum with respect to Turkey as their currency, the Turkish Lira, slides rapidly downward against our very strong Dollar! Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!” the American president tweeted. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s response was almost proportionate. As measures of active economic opposition, Erdogan assured people with an aII-too-familiar mantra that “the dollar cannot block our path.” Besides, he urged citizens to show financial patriotism and go exchange dollars for liras!
However, his dignified response cannot influence the dollar exchange rate, as well as the US economy. And do not forget, while the financial authorities of Turkey in an operative manner puzzle over how to fix the situation, Donald Trump will need only one tweet to not only devalue the lira but also to provoke a mass exodus of foreign investors from Turkey.

World's unique bookstores |
Most bookstores are created in a typical style, and that often upsets the book lovers. However, in the world there are exclusive buildings in which any visitor will feel part of the book kingdom. Read more in our guide to bookshops.
In a world where electronic devices are gradually replacing hard copies, in particular books, the appearance of exclusive bookstores can be considered an amazing fact. It is especially pleasing when such buildings are made in a unique style. Let's talk about those of them where you would want to return and buy books.
Cafebrer'ia El P'endulo (Mexico)The Cafebrer'ia El P'endulo Mexican bookstore, located in Mexico City, is one of the most unusual places in the world. This is literally a "green" store, where at every corner there are plants. In the middle of the building trees grow, and on top, on the shelves with books, flower pots are arranged. The fragrance of flowers and fresh plants not only creates a mood but also cleans the air. Inside the building, there is a lot of natural light coming through the large windows. Visitors are allowed to bring drinks and food.
El Ateneo Grand Splendid (Argentina)
In Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, a unique bookstore is located in the former Gran Splendid theater building. When you are inside, you get the feeling that the curtain is about to go up and the show will begin. Earlier, 1,050 people could fit in the amphitheater, and now 120,000 books "live" there. Every evening in the store musical groups perform, and on the scene, there is a cozy cafe.
Cook&Book (Belgium)
The Cook & Book Brussels restaurant is a unique combination of a restaurant and a bookstore. Books, as if soaring under the ceiling, symbolize the infinity of the universe immersing visitors in the unusual atmosphere of the "book restaurant". In the store, you can buy a book, and take it at the table sitting on a soft comfortable sofa.
Libreria Aqua Alta (Italy)
The Libreria Aqua Alta Italian bookstore, located in Venice, fully corresponds to its name. The premises of the store are situated on the first floor of an ancient Venetian building which is periodically flooded. In the bookshop, there are models of ships and a real gondola. Throughout the store, cats are walking around, they are the owner's favorites. The choice of publications is diverse and presented in different languages.
Livraria Lello & Irm~ao (Portugal)This store, located in the city of Porto, is considered one of the oldest in Portugal. It was opened in the distant 1881 and from now on holds the first place among the most delightful bookshops in the world. The place is famous for its unique interior, including stained glass windows and unusual wooden carvings. The "highlight" of the interior is a magnificent staircase, a cascade of bookshelves in the Art Deco style and a bizarre two-tier architecture.
Poplar Kid's Republic (China)
The Poplar Kid's Republic children's bookstore opened in Beijing, China. It was created by the SAKO architectural company and embodies the dreams of any child. Inside the shop, the futuristic style prevails. The building resembles an alien shuttle, which is dominated by slides, a huge number of toys and rounded bookshelves. The shelves have glass walls. A child can climb them and rest with a book in a separate round "capsule".

Russia reduces dependence on "risky" US dollar |
The dollar is a risky currency, First Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said. This is all you need to know about the competence of the Russian Minister of Finance. The examples of stability and reliability are the Mongolian tugrik, the South African rand, the Argentine peso, and the Russian ruble.
According to Siluanov, the American dollar, which is confidently leading in international payments, has been a simple green paper for a very long time. In addition, statements that Russia will abandon transactions in dollars are constant, but the prices for oil and gas, timber and metals, diamonds and gold on the global market are still calculated in dollars. The main flow of international payments throughout the world is also carried out in the American currency. Even if Russia decides to abandon the dollar completely, the world will not notice it. Siluanov said the authorities limit settlements and transactions in the US dollars. In fact, the stability of the dollar, which was considered the world currency, is undermined, he added. The actions of the US authorities, regarding different restrictions, lead to the fact that the dollar becomes a risky instrument. These statements were made during the evening air on Russia 1 channel and they cannot be regarded as an official position, as they are primarily aimed at patriotic citizens. After all, if this is a real response to US sanctions, then what is offered to replace the dollar: the euro or the pound? Both the EU and Britain imposed sanctions against Russia.
In other words, all this can be called empty rhetoric on the TV. Besides, this topic is being discussed for ten years. But so far a small number of ordinary citizens, who still have some savings, prefer to keep them in dollars. The members of the government, however, are not going to abandon the dollar completely judging by their foreign accounts.

Most known longest living animals |
In the animal world, as in the world of people, the quality of life is influenced by many factors, so every year the number of fauna representatives that have survived to old age shrinks.
According to the most conservative estimates, the lifespan of some of them is several times higher than the average age indices. Read more about this in our article.
Japanese koi carps
According to some reports, Japanese koi carps can live more than one hundred years.
A striking confirmation of this is a scarlet decorative carp named Hanako, who for his life changed several owners and set an absolute record among members of his species: at the time of the research, he was about 217 years old, after which he lived almost 10 more.
However, some scientists say that this figure is greatly exaggerated. Whatever it was, it is proved that the life expectancy of carp directly depends on the conditions of its habitat.
Laysan albatross
The average life expectancy of animals of this species is 12-40 years.
The observation of the oldest female albatross, nicknamed Wisdom, has been conducting since 1956, so at the moment its age is approaching 65 years. It is curious that in its years the bird still brings offspring.
Having a wingspan of about 3.7 m, Wisdom easily overcomes about 80 thousand km each year. Given her venerable age, we can assume that the total distance traveled by a bird during life is comparable to four flights from Earth to the Moon and back.
Bivalve mollusks
The oldest of the non-colonial animals known to science died during transportation to the research site.
This is a bivalve mollusk named Ming who was found on the northern coast of Iceland in 2006. After counting the annual bands on the shell it became clear that it was at least 500 years old.
Madagascar turtles
Radiated tortoise Tui Malila, one of the oldest representatives of the animal world, died at the age of not less than 188 years in 1965 and was included in the Guinness Book of Records.
Among the Madagascar turtles there are many long-livers, but it is often difficult to determine the exact age of such animals, so it is likely that the absolute age record has not been fixed yet.
Bowhead whales
These marine mammals of the baleen whales suborder, on average, live 60-70 years, but in recent years, several individuals have been found that carried slates and nephrite spearheads of the nineteenth century. Scientists came to the conclusion that these mammals experienced whaling hunting a century and a half ago.

Pound falls while chance of no-deal Brexit scenario grows |
The British national currency looks extremely weak in the foreign exchange market. It is not only the American dollar, having an impact on major currencies, is to blame for this. The fact is that traders shy away from the risks associated with the pound because of the Brexit uncertainty.
The closer March 2019, the deadline for the official withdrawal of the Kingdom from the EU, the greater the likelihood of a hard scenario that puts pressure on the pound. Sterling tested a new record low, falling amid concerns about the Brexit deal absence. So, for one pound at Heathrow airport travelers paid 1.08 dollars, or 0.93 euros.
Since mid-April, the British national currency has lost more than 10% of the value in pair with the dollar; the decline was seen in pair with the euro, too. In the future, the currency may fall by the same rate.
The current situation, according to traders, is due to the lack of progress on Brexit. If the agreement will not be reached, the GPB/USD rate may fall to 1.20, analysts predict. With a positive outcome, the pair can move to 1.39.
The meeting of the London and Brussels representatives will be held in Salzburg in September this year. Its results, of course, will affect the foreign exchange market.
Studies of the British National Institute for Economic and Social Research have shown that the UK exit from the EU will lead to a pound drop of 20% and strong inflation. Moreover, Brexit will have negative impact over many years. It is expected that by 2030 the country's economic growth will be lower by 1.5-3.7% than if it remained part of the EU.

Seven signs of global warming |
In the world, there are many problems associated with the environmental condition. Experts try to draw attention to these issues and fix a number of signs confirming environmental problems of a global scale.
Scientists and environmentalists around the world have long been paying attention to the problem of global warming. They call for careful attitude to the planet, reminding that our descendants will have to struggle with difficulties that are not always surmountable. Experts note a number of important signs pointing to climatic problems.
Reduction of the polar bears population
According to experts, since the late 90's the number of polar bears in some parts of Alaska has decreased by 40%. Interesting results were also given by the control weighing of these animals: bears lost from 1.3 kg to 2.5 kg a day at a time when they usually gain weight. The reason was the decrease in the feed base, scientists believe.
Heavy downpours in the USA increasing
In the United States over the past 30 years, the number of extreme one-day showers has increased by 80%. In 2016 and in 2018, the so-called "millennial floods" occurred in Ellicott City, Maryland. The surrounding areas were hidden beneath arrays of water.
Global sea level rise
Since 1993, the level of the World Ocean has risen sharply. In most seas, the water level has increased by about 8 cm. According to experts, this is enough to cover the entire United States with water for 3 m.
Loss of natural habitats
In the western part of the United States, there is an interesting rodent, a pika, that needs cold weather most of the year. However, due to the reduction of a suitable habitat, it has to look for new places. According to a study by scientists at the University of Colorado, a significant reduction in pica populations is associated with climatic changes: rodents leave those areas where it has become significantly warmer.
Increased hurricane activity
Over the past 30 years, large hurricanes have been recorded on the territory of the USA (with gusts of wind more than 170 km per hour) which lasted much longer than the previous ones. According to an analysis of storm data from the Associated Press, the first such storm in the Atlantic is formed almost a month earlier than 30 years ago. Besides, the movement of storms slows down which leads to significant precipitation.
Active glaciers melting
According to data provided by the NASA GRACE agency, melting glaciers is observed around the world. Over the past 16 years, 279 billion tons of glacial cover has been lost, scientists say.
Change in mountain vegetation
In the Rocky Mountains, the USA, the first signs of spring appear 11 days earlier than 30 years ago, experts at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory note. At the same time, the first flowers of delphinium appear earlier, as well as marmots come out of the hibernation. This gradually leads to a change in temperature conditions, experts emphasize.

Alcoa asks exemption from aluminium tariff |
The largest US aluminum maker has requested an exemption from tariffs on aluminium imported from Canada. The corporation has three plants in Canada supplying US companies with raw materials for aluminium cans production and the rest of products. According to Alcoa Corp., the company cannot find enough specialty aluminium alloys in the US.
The move follows Trump’s introduction of a 25% tariff on steel imports and 10% on aluminium imports in March. In this regard, many US companies have filed thousands of applications for the easing of the tariff regime.
In recent years, according to experts, aluminium production in the US has been steadily shrinking due to equipment deterioration and rising electricity costs. In the United States, Alcoa produces only 14% of aluminum. The introduction of duties on aluminum imports is seen to increase its costs by $12-14 million per month.

ESM disburses final loan tranche of €15 billion to Greece |
The European Stability Mechanism (ESM) disbursed €15 billion to Greece under the third macro-financial assistance program. This was the fifth and final tranche, noted in the ESM report. Most of the funds, €9.5 billion, will be allocated for building up the country’s liquidity buffer, and the remaining amount will be used for debt service. After the disbursement, the Greece’s liquidity buffer will reach €24 billion. These funds should be enough for 22 months to cover the country’s needs after the end of the third financial assistance program. Officially, it ends on August 20, 2018. Previously, European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs Pierre Moscovici warned that Greece should not rely on the fourth program of macroeconomic assistance.
From 2012 to 2018, Athens received €204 billion from the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF). These are the funds allocated under the second and third programs, that is, excluding €100 billion which the country received from May 2010 to December 2011. Then the money was transferred by the IMF, the European Commission and the ECB, as the EFSF had not been established yet.
