So we need both. Simply we need memories.

I think that we need recollections. As for me, If I haven't got any recollections, I won't remember my past, my own life. Now I feel myself bad, but I try to remember some good recollections. Recollections-emotions-life.

I think that bad memories are forgotten soon. For example, it was inconvenient for me to remember one thing and it was very painful, and my husband suffered but now I almost forgot it and it doesn't hurt me...

I guess you put the word "both" in the right place!

Well, the sentence was last, of course.
"I put the word "both" in the last sentence?"

Last is when smth comes in the end or stops... Latest can be news, it means that they are fresh but not last, then it will mean that there will be no news at all.
For example, his last word was... - he said smth in the end of his speech, life, etc.
The latest rumours - the fresh rumours...

Get it? ;)
