(Grandfather Thunder-Air of Earth)DESCRIPTION: Grandfather Thunder (Nernehsoh, patriarch of the Thunder clan) is depicted in Woodland traditions of the 1600's. His thunderbird decoration symbolizes protection, and is associated with blood, the color red, and the west. Thunderbird's rival spirit deity, the underwater panther, is embroidered on his sleeves. Yellow lightning designs on either side of the panther represent the concentrated power of the sun, raw energy, and the south. His decorative breastplate is made of bird wings and rabbit leg bones (also worn in the hair as ornaments). His medicine/tobacco bag is filled with power objects, attracting deities that work with him and protect him. He wears a golden eagle feather on his head (like the bald eagle, a thunder symbol). His earrings of silver and porcupine quill are typical of Menominee and Ottawa decoration. The silver nickel alloy used in their creation was a standard trade item.
In Native American tradition, sacred songs called up the spirit guardians. Grandfather Thunder is a repository of family/clan songs. He beats the drum to call the thunderbird. The drum beats the sound of the heart, thunder, air, and earth.
