(Grandmother Moon-Water of Earth)
DESCRIPTION: Grandmother Moon, Nohkomeh, appears in the Woodland setting of the 1900's. She sits in her birch bark/elm bark winter lodge, tending a sleeping infant curled next to a doll. Nohkomeh is the Mother of Mother Earth (the Earth spirit, Nekia-Yo^m-Menae^s, the Princess of Sacred Circles). She has a special relationship with women, protecting them and connecting with them. She is an elder, a repository of clan and tribal wisdom.
The baby emphasizes her grandmother status (older female relatives were primary caretakers in Native American cultures). The babe is twin to the infant portrayed with Mother Earth in the Princess of Sacred Circles card.
The moon shield hanging on the wall of her lodge is decorated with the phases of the moon. The Menominee calendar was originally lunar; a year was measured by the cycles of thirteen moons. Only later was it adapted to the solar twelve-division system. Moon shields were created with lunar imagery that was personally significant to their designers. Nohkomeh's turquoise/silver necklace of squash blossom design was a trade item from the southwest, and proclaims her special connection to the moon.
MEANINGS: The All-Mother, the generous bestower of life's bounty, owner of the never-empty cornucopia or cauldron. The wisdom of the feminine/maternal principle. The wisdom of the grandmothers, elders, or ancestors. Nurturance, being cared for, the release of one's burdens to a willing recipient, unconditional love and acceptance. The bounty of the earth is available for the taking. Conversely, stinginess, greed, selfishness, coldness, or insensitivity to the needs of others.| : |
