(Father Sun - Fire of Earth)

DESCRIPTION: A sun ray, symbolizing the power of the Creator, pierces Father Sun. (The Sun represented the Creator, but was not the Creator, an important distinction in Woodland cosmology.) Father Sun personifies the element of fire and the Sun, as evidenced by his pipe and solar ornamentation. He is modeled on a Menominee hereditary chief who chose the bear as his personal symbol-Chief Oshkosh, whose name means "bear claw."

The copper and beadwork yoke of Father Sun's tunic is a typical Menominee design (copper was mined in northern Wisconsin/Michigan by the Menominee). The Sun symbol is emblazoned on his yoke underneath a collar of rainbowcolored beads. The beadwork represents the plants of the earth. His copper arm bands are engraved with a Sun mandala. His red loincloth is decorated with another Sun symbol, out of which grows a corn plant (Tree of Life). Corn is associated with the Sun and was cultivated in Wisconsin by Woodland tribes. A floral design is embroidered on the cuffs of his tunic.

The pipe is a father symbol of fire and the Sun. The beaded bands on the upper portion of the pipe are blue for the sky, red for the earth, and yellow for the sun trail, or life path. The wood used to make the pipe symbolizes the plant kingdom; the pipe's fur and feather decorations represent the animal kingdom; and the stone stem stands for the earth and purification. The reddish color of the pipe honors those who died in the Great Flood (a pervasive Native American belief shared by most ancient cultures).

The color scheme of the painting is traditionally Menominee: red, yellow, blue or black, and white. The four colors are associated with the four directions.

MEANINGS: Learning experiences. Reverence for the growth processes made possible through the union of the sun and the earth. Can represent one's genetic father, or a fatherly role model. A tutor, teacher, or mentor who shares knowledge and wisdom. One who nurtures the young, helping to develop newly planted ideas and concepts.
