DESCRIPTION: In late winter/early spring, a youth prepares for his coming-of-age in the Woodland community. As a first step, he has determined his vocation or life-work. The young man is learning how to make shields, after trying and discarding other options. Through the influence of his mentor (Medicine Woman in the Nine of Sacred Circles card), he has become focused and disciplined. His lodge is filled with his first efforts at shield making; eight hoops of different sizes and in various stages of completion surround him. He holds a branch in his hands, curving it into hoop shape.

The youth's cloth turban is a post-contact innovation, along with his calico shirt and Hudson Bay blanket (wool and broadcloth were common trading goods). His necklaces are made of glass beads, another trade item.

MEANINGS: Practical, material matters. Apprenticeship. Learning a craft or vocation; job training (on site or in school). Venturing from one's personal environment into the larger world. Physical dexterity and skill. Manual labor. Alternatively, half-hearted efforts; chasing shallow goals rather than developing inner convictions; going through the motions; a dissatisfying career; not knowing what to do with one's life; lack of purpose or direction.
