Faces, like build, vary a lot. Some people have oval faces – their foreheads are much wider than their chins. Other people have heart-shaped, square or round faces.
Features also vary. My grandfather has bushy eyebrows (he has lots of hair!), a hooked nose and high сheekbones. His eyes are large. My mother has a broad nose, which she hates, as she prefers narrow noses. But she is lucky to have even or regular teeth. My sister corrected her crooked teeth by wearing a brace which straightened them. She has rosy cheeks, small ears and a snub nose, which goes up at the end.
I have long, curly hair, though my sister is the opposite, with short, straight hair. Her hair is fine and doesn't weigh very much, but mine is thick and heavy. My mother's hair is wavy – in between straight and curly. It's cut in a bob and she also has a short fringe, where it is cut horizontally across her forehead. My father is losing his hair – in fact he is going bald, which makes him very sad. My brother looks like he is going to lose his hair too – it is receding.

Congratulations!
Это простое поздравление подойдет для многих случаев, например, на свадьбе, при повышении по службе, удачной сдаче экзамена, при разговоре с родителями новорожденного.
Well done!
Эти слова можно сказать человеку, сдавшему экзамен или выполнившему другую сложную задачу, достигшему чего-либо, например, получившему повышение по службе. Можно так похвалить ребенка за успешно выполненное поручение. Это достаточно распространенные слова похвалы.
В день рождения
Англичане и американцы чаще всего поздравляют с днем рождения намного более сдержанно, чем мы. Самое обычное обращение к имениннику известно всем: Happy Birthday! Более официально можно сказать так: Many happy returns!
Примечание: В Великобритании одни дни рождения считаются более значимыми, чем другие (впрочем, как и у нас). Например, 18-й день рождения – особенный, потому что в этот день человек официально становится взрослым. В прошлом взрослыми считали людей, достигших возраста 21 года, и некоторые люди по-прежнему особо отмечают этот день рождения, вручая именинникам серебряные ключи – символ ключа от двери в новую жизнь.
Перед экзаменом или сложным делом
Если хотите пожелать человеку удачи перед сложным событием, просто скажите: Good luck! Но некоторые люди бывают суеверными и боятся, что такое пожелание принесет противоположный эффект. Поэтому таким людям иногда говорят: Break a leg!
Звучит странновато, мягко говоря, но означает примерно следующее:
I hope you break a leg — Ни пуха ни пера
Let's all go and do our best. Break a leg! — Ну что же, надо постараться. Сплюнем!
Если же кого-то постигла неудача, можете сказать: Bad luck!
Тосты
На вечеринках и различных встречах вас могут пригласить выпить или произнести тост.

to give/propose a toast to smb. — провозгласить тост в честь кого-л.

В открытке или письме тому, кто сдал экзамен, добился повышения и т.д., можно написать так:

В сложных ситуациях можете написать: I was so sorry to hear that ….
Если пишете человеку, который недавно потерял кого-то из родных, можно написать так:
I was deeply saddened to hear… - Мне было очень грустно (печально) узнать о том, что...
или
Please accept my deepest condolences on the death of… - примите мои искренние соболезнования по поводу смерти...
("I" можно заменить на "We", если нужно. Например: We were very sad to hear that…)

Оказывается на свете есть добрые англичане, которые решили помочь наивным американцам освоится в недружелюбной Англии с ее английским, который иностранец, чей родной английский, не всегда поймет. Как так? – спросите. Да, просто все – у англичан столько красочных и колоритных способов описать свою действительность, что канадцу, австралийцу, американцу или новозеландцу легко запутаться, не говоря о тех, кому английский не приходится родным. Обратите внимание на следующие типично английские (в большинстве своем лондонские) выражения или слова с объяснением на английском для англофонов не с островов. Я также осмелился привести русские аналоги там, где было возможно:
Beefeater - This is the name given to the guards at the Tower of London and a chain of cheap steak restaurants. One is worth visiting, one is worth avoiding!
Русский: тут все понятно – стражи у Тауэра и сеть дешевых забегаловок.
Boffin - This is the word for a nerd. Usually male, a boffin would be highly intelligent, have no dress sense and probably grow up to be a mad scientist or a programmer!

Father Christmas - Santa Claus in America, though I'm not sure he's the same bloke. I saw him in London when I was leaving for New York, and when I arrived, hey he was there too!

Job's worth - A job's worth is a person who is inflexible in their job, even if it means upsetting their customer. For example, if a restaurant served custard with apple pie and you wanted ice cream instead, a job's worth would be the kind of waiter who would refuse to give you ice cream because it wasn't listed like that on the menu. The excuse would be that it was more than their job's worth.

Lollipop man - Every kid loves the lollipop man (or lady of course). They stand in the middle of the street and hold this huge lollipop up to stop the traffic as the kids cross the road. Actually it's not a real lollipop - it is a sign that tells the traffic to "STOP, CHILDREN CROSSING". Sometimes called a crossing guard in the US.

Mother - Don't be alarmed if a British bloke says "Shall I be Mother?". This would happen when the family sit down to a pot of tea or a slice of cake and someone needs to pour or cut for everyone. Whoever gets to do the honours is being "Mother".

Кроме модальных глаголов, глаголов суждения и говорения типа to agree, to believe, to guess, to think, to suppose, to imagine, to realise, to admit, to demand, to deny, to suggest, to tell, to promise , мнение о высказанном событии может быть выражено рядом наречий и наречных оборотов.
Такие наречия и наречные обороты часто относятся ко всему утверждению и стоят в начале предложения. К ним относятся:
1) наречия оценки говорящим того, что утверждается:
fortunately/luckily — к счастью,
unfortunately — к несчастью,
strangely (enough) — (довольно), странно,
unexpectedly — неожиданно, против ожиданий и др.;

What are Palindromes? |

Palindromes
The word palindrome is derived from the Greek palнndromos, meaning running back again (palнn = AGAIN + drom–, drameоn = RUN). A palindrome is a word or phrase which reads the same in both directions. Some simple examples are:

Words like LIVE and STRAW (which read EVIL and WARTS backwards) are not themselves palindromes but the "phrases" LIVE EVIL and STRAW WARTS are. A palindrome is not necessarily a single word.
The longest single English word in common usage which is a palindrome is REDIVIDER, although the contrived chemical term DETARTRATED is two letters longer. In Finnish there is a 25-letter palindromic word: SOLUTOMAATTIMITTAAMOTULOS which means the result from a measurement laboratory for tomatoes, although technically it is a compound of four words. There is also the equally long SAIPPUAKUPPINIPPUKAUPPIAS which means soap cup trader.
When creating reversible sentences, it is usually accepted that punctuation and word spacings are ignored, and so the famous MADAM, I'M ADAM is a valid palindrome.
There are two other types of palindrome, although neither is particularly common. The first is the word-unit palindrome. As the name suggests, these are palindromes in which the words form the same sentence in either direction, e.g. WOMEN UNDERSTAND MEN; FEW MEN UNDERSTAND WOMEN. Occasionally these are also traditional palindromes, such as in I DID, DID I? but this only happens when each word is itself a traditional palindrome.
The other kind of palindrome is the mirrored palindrome. These are palindromes which are graphically reversible. Not all letters in mirrored palindromes necessarily have symmetry about a vertical axis (A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X) since some letters are (more or less) mirror images of others (e.g. L and J). Therefore a mirrored palindrome is not necessarily also a traditional palindrome. Punctuation and spaces cannot be ignored when creating mirrored palindromes. When reversed A TOYOTA becomes ATOYOT A which, strictly speaking, is not the same. WOT TOW, although fairly meaningless, is a valid mirrored palindrome. Of course, with this type of palindrome, it is important whether upper or lower case letters are used: bid is a mirrored palindrome, but BID is not.

Как вы учите новые слова? По какому принципу избираете их? Этот вопрос кажется вам странноватым? Да, большинство людей, изучающих язык, просто заучивают на память длинные списки слов (возможно, по определенной теме). Этот прием может быть полезным в расширении словарного запаса, но все же он достаточно трудоемок. К тому же, многие слова, заученные таким образом, быстро забываются, особенно, если какое-то время не используются на практике.
Можно ли запоминать новые слова так, чтобы их действительно можно было использовать, чтобы они были полезны в общении?
Предлагаем вам ознакомиться с мнением Пола Робертса из Хартфордширского университета, Великобритания. Он дает своим студентам советы о том, как планировать расширение своего словарного запаса, выбирая, что именно стоит запоминать.
Прежде чем прочесть этот отрывок, задумайтесь, как вы выбираете изучаемые слова. Пытаетесь ли вы выучить все новые слова, встретившиеся в тексте? Если нет, то какими критериями вы пользуетесь в выборе слов для запоминания? Совпадают ли они с предложенными Полом?
«Возьмем, к примеру, погоду. Говоря о проливном дожде по-английски, можно использовать одну из нескольких фраз: It’s raining cats and dogs; it’s pouring
with rain; it’s raining stair rods; there is torrential rain; the rain is terrible. Все они означают одно и то же.
Какие из них лучше всего запомнить в первую очередь? Да, “It’s raining cats and dogs” – хорошее выражение. Смешное и легкое для запоминания – но многие люди не поняли бы вас, если бы вы его употребили. Даже в Англии, откуда происходит эта идиома, люди обычно так не говорят. Если вы планируете общаться с разными людьми, не только выходцами из Англии, возможно, лучше сказать‘torrential rain’ или ‘the rain is terrible’, потому что они более понятны».
Как выбирать слова для запоминания?
Пол считает, что следует учитывать своих потенциальных слушателей при выборе новых слов. Сможет ли человек, слушающий меня, понять это слово или эту фразу? Есть и некоторые другие критерии, которые могут помочь при выборе слов, которые стоит запомнить.
Повторяемость. Часто ли вы слышите это слово или встречаете его в печати? Если оно нередко встречается на вашем пути, вероятно, это слово было бы полезно запомнить.
Диапазон применения. Это слово может использоваться в очень узком значении или же оно более общее? Помните, что вам может никогда не представиться возможность употребить слово с очень узким значением. Простой пример: катамаран – один из видов лодки (судна). Однако слово «лодка» можно применить в большинстве случаев, когда речь идет о реках, море и мореплавании. А вот слово «катамаран» так часто не используешь из-за его узкого значения.
Полезность лично для вас. Если вы интересуетесь конкретной сферой, для вас будет полезен словарный запас, необходимый для обсуждения этой сферы. Например, врачам полезны слова, относящиеся к медицине, и т.д.
В английском языке слишком много слов, чтобы вы сумели выучить все из них. Значит, нужно определять, какие слова вам хотелось бы выучить в первую очередь, какие слова сейчас нужнее. Старайтесь избегать обычного зазубривания словарных списков. Лучше подумайте о контексте, вспомните предложение, в котором услышали новое слово или фразу. Это поможет вам запомнить, как правильно употреблять это слово.
ДОМАШНЕЕ ЗАДАНИЕ:
Откройте словарь на любой странице. Выберите пять слов или выражений, которые, по вашему мнению, соответствуют вашим критериям выбора «полезного словарного запаса». Подумайте, как вы могли бы использовать эти слова в разговоре на интересующую вас тему. Потренируйтесь: мысленно или письменно составьте несколько коротких историй или просто связных текстов с этими словами.
Напоследок – пословица, которая вполне подходит к сегодняшней теме:
Make haste slowly. – Торопись медленно (Тише едешь – дальше будешь).
Лучше запоминать меньше слов, но активнее использовать их в общении.
