Orkus Interview Translation
On a long journeyAt the Wacken Open Air 2006 performed a band that was probably unknown to most guests. The well-organized event traditionally comes up with the greatest of the great and bands like D'espairsRay count as quiet hot tips. Seemingly following the motto of "The buffalo calls and everyone comes running" the sold-out, biggest Metal Festival opened its gates from August, 3rd until August, 5th. Not just for us, but especially for a couple of fans, the japanese band should remain the reason to travel up north to Wacken to experience some sort of different festival flair. Of course we used the rare chance to interview the whole band just before their live to ask them extraordinary, curious questions which were not exactly fitting the Japanese standard, and again managed to raise tiny question marks above their heads.
Orkus: How did you spend this day? Did you have the chance to see some of the festival yet?
Karyu: The only thing I can say about the festival is that it's amazingly huge!
Hizumi: It's the first time for us to play at such an event. There are no festivals of this kind in Japan. It's just very different from Japan.
Orkus: What are you going to do with your V.I.P. passes once you're back at home?
Hizumi: I'll pin them on my wall.
Tsukasa: I guess I'll keep mine as well and everytime I look at them I will remember the Wacken Open Air.
Karyu: I suppose I will put mine into my casket and once I'm old I will look at them with delight and remember this visit.
Hizumi: I guess I will do this too and whenever I look at this pass I will loudly say "Wacken!" (laugh)
Zero: Usually I collect everything of us in a little casket. I will keep these passes in there too!
Orkus: We are very happy that all of you could make it today. Last October, one day before your "Kagerou x D'espairsRay Coupling Tour" live, only three of you could make it! Hizumi, what happened to you back then? (laugh)
Hizumi: (hesitating) That was very difficult. I even almost missed the live! But I don't really want to talk about this. It was just hard.
Orkus: Let's come back to your album.
[Coll:set] is almost one year old already, at least in Japan. Are you currently back in the studio working on something new?
Karyu: Since July, 24th there's a new single out which you can only buy at concerts in Japan. There's no plan yet to release this track in Germany.
Orkus: Could you still tell us what this single is like? Have you remained faithful to your style or have you tried out new ideas?
Karyu: You can find two elements in the new song. Of course we kept our style. However, we also tried to show new sides. On the whole D'espairsRay always remains D'espairsRay, though.
Orkus: Did you know that your record made it into the readers' charts in July/August?
Karyu: No, we didn't know! But we are very happy with this choice!
Orkus: Do you actually get to read reports by the German press?
Karyu: Even though we are really interested, we don't get magazines at hand. That's very sad!
Orkus: Last time you visited us during the "Coupling Tour 2005". What everyone is interested in – besides the shows – is what life off stage is like. You were eight people on tour. What did you do?
D'espairsRay: Do you mean before or after shows?
Orkus: Feel free to tell us about both!
Hizumi: Right before lives nothing much happens. We just prepare. Afterwards, however, we often fall for alcohol!
Orkus: I just got to see you for the first time in October and I was immediately enthralled. To tell you about my personal view point right away: I felt like transferred into another world. Do you try to take your audience into another world?
Karyu: We don't really plan ahead on doing that but it is nice to capture the audience!
Orkus: Since we're talking about other worlds: Please imagine you were to create your own dream world. What would it look like?
Karyu: Being on stage every day, of course!
Hizumi: I would agree. As long as it's fun, of course. Nothing works without fun.
Zero: In my dream world my wish would be command. That means, whatever I would want to have, I would get immediately. For example, if I said "I want my hair like this!", then somebody would have to jump and do my hair like that right away!
Tsukasa: I'd want to fly!... And I'd want to make other people fly! (laugh)
Orkus: .... and your personal hell? [lit. "nightmare world"]
Karyu: There'd be no band in my personal hell!
Hizumi: Losing my voice.
Tsukasa: My nightmare already became a reality. Once the pedal of my drumset broke off and I couldn't go on playing. I'm still haunted by that!
Zero: Not being able to dream anymore.
Orkus: What do you consider corrupt in this world? I know your song
Tainted World. Maybe you can say something about the lyrics? When do you have thoughts that inspire the writing of such lyrics?
Zero: When I wrote this piece, something happened which I had never expected. But it did happen. I don't really want to talk about what it was. During this experience I thought many people say "sorry", but you can see in their eyes that they don't mean it. That's absolute crap! I swore to myself to always remain honest. That's where the idea to
Tainted World came from.
Orkus: Do you also have lyrics that cause goosebumps up until this day?
Zero: Yes,
Born is one of them! Already during songwriting we looked into the future. When hearing this track today, I look back upon this time and realize that the chemistry within D'espairsRay just works – and how much we've developed over the time.
Orkus: What's your personal conclusion after seven years with D'espairsRay?
Karyu: We're still on our way, so I can't come up with a conclusion.
Zero: During the last seven years a lot has happened to both the band and ourselves personally. I may not know what will happen in the future, but after these seven years I am really glad that I am able to be myself and that I will have a lot of time left with D'espairsRay. I am very proud of that!
Hizumi: During the past seven years we've had success with the band, but we've also made mistakes. If we had been a different band, we might not have needed such a long time to have the same success we have now. But we used the time to develop and to become what we are now! Today we are D'espairsRay the way we want it to be, therefore the last years haven't been a waste of time, but a very precious experience!
Tsukasa: In the beginning we were four very different individuals. Over the course of time we managed to realize these differences and to become a band. We really needed these seven years to grow together.
Orkus: What do you plan to do with your time left in Germany? You still have two days....
Karyu: The next two days? Beer and sausages! (laugh)
Orkus: You've come to the right place then! [Wacken Open Air]
Karyu: Okay, then we will start today! (laugh)
Hizumi: This time we have more free time. During this free time I would like to see Tsukasa Bungee jumping! (laugh)
Orkus: You would like to see Tsukasa doing it?
Hizumi: Yes, I've heard one can do that somewhere around here and Tsukasa said in the car, he would like to try it!
Tsukasa: I won't do it! (laugh)
Hizumi: It's your own fault!
Tsukasa: I have never said a single word about it! (laugh) I have heard there's a toilet somewhere on the site which contains a small drumset. Have you heard about that?
Orkus: No...!?
Tsukasa: Yes, I must try that by all means! (laugh)
