Gender ? Laughter ? Media

International and Interdisciplinary Conference
August 24-26, 2006, Kamloops, B.C., Canada

This conference forms the final part of a three-year workshop program entitled ?Subversions of Gender Identities through Laughter and the Comic in Literature, Film and Modern Media.? In 2004 and 2005 three collaborative
workshops were held in Canada and Germany, addressing intersections in theories of gender, laughter (humour, comedy), and media, as well as in artistic practices. Topics discussed included cross-dressing and gender bending (Bronnbach, Germany), cross-cultural issues (Vancouver, B.C., Canada), comic genres and strategies (Kingston, Ont., Canada). For more information on this framework, see: www.german.ubc.ca/GLM
For the final conference, we invite contributions from various disciplines
such as (German, English, Russian, French etc.) literature, film, theatre
and media studies, gender theory, psychology, anthropology, sociology, and
philosophy. The goal is to present 18 public lectures, each of them 30 minutes in length, followed by a 15 minutes discussion. The conference will be combined with a busker and comedy festival in the city of Kamloops.
The conference language is English, and the organizers plan to publish a
collection of essays including selected conference contributions.
Invitees will be asked to submit final drafts of their papers shortly after the
conference.

Timeline at a glance:
January 10, 2006 Submission of title and one-page abstract
January 20, 2006 Notification of invitees
July 31, 2006 Submission of paper for the presentation
September 30, 2006 Submission of final draft for the essay collection

For all invited speakers accommodation for the duration of the conference will be provided. For scholars from Canadian universities travel subsidies are available. Participants from outside Canada will have to apply for travel subsidies from either their home institution, or federal agencies (e.g. Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). Group application for German participants will be organised as soon as possible after the notification.
