Large – 58-inch wingspan, 25-inch drop.

Small – 44-inch wingspan, 20-inch drop.

Yarn

Large: 3 skeins of Valley Yarns Charlemont, 60% Superwash merino/20% Mulberry Silk, 20% Polyamide 100 gms[3.53 oz] 439 yds [401 meters] large sample used 950 yards

Small:  1 skein of Unplanned Peacock Twinkle Lace Merino/Silk/Stellina 100 gms [3.53 oz] 850 yds, [777 meters] small sample used 500 yards. (Shown in color Bunting)

Needles

Size US 4 (3.5 mm):  47 inch [120 cm] circular needles.

Notions

Stitch markers, size 16 (0.4mm) crochet hook for adding beads, size 1 (2.75mm) crochet hook for optional chain cast off, large eyed tapestry needle for grafting and weaving in ends.

13 (26) size 8/0 gold lined clear seed beads, smooth waste yarn for provisional cast on, T-pins and optional blocking wires for blocking.

Gauge

Lace: 29 sts and 28 rows to 4 inches [10cm] in pattern after wet blocking.

Fingering: 23 sts and 24 rows to 4inches [10cm] in pattern after wet blocking.

Pattern Notes

  • This pattern is worked flat from the top down in charted form.
  • Instructions are given for two sizes and two different bind offs.
  • Both shawls start the same way, when the small and large diverge it is noted in the pattern with separate instructions to make it easier for you to follow.
  • Beads are added after knitting the stitch, with a crochet hook.
  • Gauge is not critical to this piece, however knitters gauge will affect final dimensions and yarn use

Gather 3 or 5: Put a crochet hook through those sts, using the hook pull loop of yarn through those sts, drop them from needle, then chain st (the chain is used to “anchor” the gather). See our tutorial on Estonian Gathered Stitches for more details on how to do this stitch.

Pattern

Tab CO: Provisionally CO 3 sts and work 13 rows of garter stitch, turn work 90 degrees and pick up and p 6 sts, then pick up the 3 sts from your provisional cast on; 12 sts.

Finishing

Bind off as follows: Knit 2, return both stitches to the left hand needle and knit 2 together through the back loops, *knit 1, return two stitches from right hand needle to left hand needle and knit two together through back loops; repeat from * until all sts have been worked. Pull end through final stitch and cut yarn, leaving a 9 inch tail for weaving in.

Small:

Gather 3 sts, chain 10, gather 3 sts, chain 10, gather 3 sts, chain 10, gather 4 stitches, chain 10, * gather 3, chain 10, gather 5, chain 10 repeat from * to last 10 sts, gather 3, chain 10, gather 3, chain 10, gather 4 and cut thread, pull end through final stitch and weave in.

Large:

Gather 3 sts, chain 10, gather 3, chain 10, * gather 3, chain 10, gather 5, chain 10, repeat from * to last 9 sts, gather 3, chain 10, gather 3, chain 10, gather 3, cut yarn leaving a 9 in tail for weaving in, pull through final stitch and weave in.

Blocking:

Soak piece in lukewarm water for at least 30 minutes, using blocking wires, if desired across the top (flat)edge, stretch and use t-pins to either pull out the crochet chains or at each leaf point.
