After a series of devastating floods, the Army Corps of Engineers decided to develop the Chain of Wetlands Project, which would extend the floodplain by converting areas of the river’s floodplain into wetlands. This plan has been successful and the Trinity River is a much cleaner waterway now.

 

Now, as the City of Dallas continues to debate the future of its Trinity River Project, a group of environmentalists is looking at an alternative vision that may have a chance to prove the benefits of re-wilding the Trinity. Angela Hunt and Jeremy Sloan are leading the effort to create a new plan for the Trinity. They say that re-wilding the Trinity can be done at a fraction of the cost of a project like the Simmons Park. And they are hoping to prove that a different approach can bring the community and city together while respecting the values that have helped to shape the river’s history.

Katy Trail
