"I scan buildings and slabs that fly past. They are my resource for shape, scale, and color. I am particularly fond of forms and surfaces gently leveled and watered down to street essence. Such places suggest inadvertency and compliance in blending. In recreating such settings, I blanket an already obscure image, washing out further any dangling details. To render this all fittingly establishes a personal hideout from the caffeinated pulling from every direction. "

–Christopher St. Leger

It takes some serious skills to make photorealistic watercolors, but that’s exactly what Christopher St. Leger has going on in his work. He’s rendered a series of skateboarders kick-flipping and cruising which are particularly fluid, along with a range of impressive cityscapes. Like a looser, more colorful Richard Estes, St. Leger will trick you into thinking your looking at the real thing.

Christopher St. Leger creates his version of a modern metropolis in watercolor – and it’s absolutely fantastic. Integrating skateboard street culture, city life, and nature, St. Leger creates works so realistic, it’s almost as if we’re looking at the world through his eyes.

“I respond to the elusive yet commonplace things I encounter en route to my destination, ” he says. “As I observe and render the outer, often banal aspect of the subject, I aim to extract a poetry that suggests a cherished and lively fantasy life protected within.

“Experiencing otherness, even if only across one’s backyard, is elation: the feeling of entering the sphere of another’s life, of imagining a possibility where for a moment habits can be broken or longings fulfilled. Maybe it is romantic, or maybe it is simply automotive, to desire freedom of movement without physical exertion.”
