Fullview most definitely recommended - for once, I've posted something in a larger resolution, so you can really see the details.
So, according to my
latest poll, people were interested in seeing some WIPs from me... And (considering I haven't drawn that much recently and it'll take another while til this one is finished) here we are.
Which, of course, only shows the head, and thus part of the piece. But it still looks finished, at least.
Now, some explanations and rambling about my technique
First of all, the
sketch. As you can see, I tend to have quite detailed sketches - which makes it a whole lot easier to get the proportions right. These sketches are done with graphite, rather than colored pencil. Graphite is much easier to erase, after all, should I do something wrong - which happens from time to time
" title="LOL" /> I also tend to erase those sketch lines before I add an details with the colored pencils, most certainly if I work with lighter colors. If the colors are light enough, you can see the graphite through the colors, and you don't really want that...
Also, you can see I use a large grid - I divide the piece 4*4, so in 16 different smaller parts. These grid lines make it a whole lot easier for me to draw an accurate sketch, and to get everything in the correct position. Apart from this, the drawing is freehanded.
You can also see I like to finish parts of the drawing, meaning I will have both completely finished areas and completely white areas in the same artwork. I tend to work in sections - I might work at multiple at the same time (as, in this case, the rock and the ice in the upper right corner, as well as the fur on the back of the fox - and I could start working on the chest and the rocks/ice on the left too). Thus, I don't do one layer everywhere, then the next layer everywhere, etc., like it might be common to do (especially in other mediums).
Those sections tend to be just natural sections - one eye, one ear, one icicle, one part of the rocks -, or they follow the "artificial" lines of the grid. Both are quite easy to see here.
