Spinosaurus Skeletal Reconstruction

This is a skeletal reconstruction of Spinosaurus aegyptiacus, a genus of theropod dinosaur that lived in what is now Northern Africa during the Late Cretaceous period around 99 to 93.5 million years ago (Cenomanian to upper Turonian stage). This reconstruction is based on material from multiple specimens due to the extremely fragmentary nature of the remains.

The sail here is based on the holotype material as it is generally agreed to have been a more mature individual than the neotype. I have also done away with the "M" shape that is so prevalent in reconstructions of Spinosaurus and that many authors now find problematic as it is clear that there is erosion on the tips of the neural arches of some of the dorsal vertebrae. Missing elements and portions thereof are represented here in grey and are inferred from adjacent bones.

The hind limbs are scaled exactly as Ibrahim et al., 2014 concluded (using the length of the last dorsal vertebra as a point of reference). I have positioned it in a bipedal stance with the neck drawn back and the forelimbs tucked close to the body, keeping the tail low to the ground, using it as a counterweight (like a pangolin). Speaking of which, the tail has been updated in line with (Ibrahim et al., 2020a).

Other modifications to previous versions include changes to the position of the feet. Spinosaurus was digitigrade, meaning all four toes (including the hallux) touched the ground when in walked. I strongly suspect it was also totipalmate, meaning all four toes were fully webbed.

Little more than a phalanx from the forelimbs has been found with an associated set of remains. I base the rest of the forelimbs here on Baryonyx and Suchomimus (close relatives of Spinosaurus). I make no comment on the quadrupedal abilities of Spinosaurus. In order to support the full weight of a theropod of this size, I expect there to have been some serious modifications to this basic Baryonchine arm in the real Spinosaurus. We will simply have to wait for more complete fossil remains to be found and published in order to solve this conundrum.
