Made for the Chronicles of Man-universe
The Mk14 style rifle is a dynamic weapon's platform based on the original Labe Industries design of the similar, but smaller Mk15, intended to be an "everyman's" rifle system.
The Mk14 is a significant improvement in caliber capability over the Mk15. While the Mk15 excels in shipboard engagements or against lightly armored targets, the Mk14 is designed to give the user the capability to take down targets wearing heavier power armor. While the standard Mk14 is a .50 caliber combined Gas-and-rail-gun system using the .50 Longbow round, it can equip a round as large as the .700 Kaiju, requiring only a change of the barrel group.
The weapon system consists of three parts:
1) The Lower Receiver, including buffer-bellows, active-recoil management system, magazine well, fusion-cell well, bolt-carrier-group, and fire-control-group.
2) The Upper Receiver, including charging handle, telemetry package, data management package, and user-interface package.
3) Barrel Group, including mounting points, barrel, and weapon-propulsion package (usually railgun coils).
For weapon shown
Caliber: .50 Longbow
Operation: Gas Operated, Direct Impingement, Rotating Bolt with Electromagnetic Assist
Barrel Length: 51cm
OAL: 106cm
Weight: 6.2kg
Rate of Fire: 900 rpm
Effective Range: 9.2 km
The Rifle Length barrel group of the Mk14 is designed to allow the weapon platform to fill a Designated Marksman's Role in efficiently defeating enemy power armor targets, while still being short enough to also fill a Service-Rifle engagement range for soldiers equipped with light to medium power armor.

I spent
A LOT of time doing research on this design. I'm planning a partial-internals view to demonstrate how it works. I've learned a lot about firearms since I drew the
M1 MASIR line.
While this rifle is made for the year 3400, it owes a lot to the AR15 weapons platform, the DesertTech MDR, IMI Tavor, and other modern rifles. I'm not ashamed to say that I borrowed quite a bit in the design.
This weapon highlights the mentality of the
Threshold. While the
Alliance might have effective and high-tech looking rifles, the Threshold focuses on practicality. It doesn't have to look pretty to work, it just has to work.
I designed the original Mk15 after the - you guessed it - AR15. The original Mk15 is, much like it's real-world analog, meant to be easy to work with, and easy to maintain. Not the best for any one job, but darn good at most of them.
Soon I'll post up a comparison between the Mk14 and Mk15. It might not seem like a big difference but considering I have layers in Adobe Illustrator that show the internals, it took a fair bit of effort.
