Doodle inspired by the recent find of what appears to be a fossilized jaw of a dire wolf in north-eastern China, something without precedent until now. It was believed that the dire wolf avoided cold weather and never crossed from North America into Asia. This find would suggest that at some point of the Pleistocene, dire wolves were indeed found in Asia, and the study suggests that perhaps it was competition with hyenas, rather than low temperatures, that kept them from thriving. Instead, in North America, where hyenas were seemingly absent, they became the most succesful large carnivores during the late Pleistocene.
