Latin name: Hyaena Hyaena
Originates from North and East Africa, the middle East and Central Asia.
Current status: Near Threatened
Did you know:
&The Striped Hyena is known to kill its own prey, and on rare occasions, attack humans.
&They are a monogamous pair, in which both male and female take part in raising the cubs.
&Its a nocturnal animal, typically only emerging in complete darkness, and tends to quickly return to its lair at sunrise.
&Some people regard it as cowardly, for feigning death when attacked, but theyre also known to stand their ground against larger predators such as Leopards, in disputes over food.
&In Middle Eastern folklore, the Striped Hyena is often the symbol for stupidity and treachery, and becomes the physical incarnation of jinns.
&It is the national animal of Lebanon.
