In case anyone is still confused:
Johaan first encountered Mеnegarm in chapter 2. Johaans death was an accident, it was Finn that was supposed to die. He was then resurrected by Fridulfr. Their second encounter happened in chapter 7. Johaan disrespected Mеnegarm by using his power to kill the pack of dogs.
But instead of killing him, Mеnegarm made Johaan realize that he did this for his pack, that Johaan has changed since chapter 2 and now cares for them.
Therefor, Mеnegarm spared his life, and removed his sin, so that he would have no reason to kill him.
But, in order to remove his sin, he had to replace it with a demon. Johaan has had that demon inside of him ever since, but since he hasn't been in any major fights, it remained hidden.
Now, Johaan returned to his territory, but instead of using Mеnegarm's power, he asked for it and he agreed to help.
Mеnegarm had a reason to kill the shield wolves since they already had a lack of respect for the land and the gods in it.
