Here's an outline of the techniques I use for the digital pets I make for Khimeros. It's also handy for designing characters and things. Naturally a painterly style is going to look more realistic but for something like compiler pets that's not possible.

Feel free to download it and play with the colors and layers. The base is free for character designs and such so if you make something you like, please upload it to the internet or wherever you like. Just be sure to tell people where you got the base from and link back to the patreon page so they can download it, too.
