With an area of 130.9 km2, it is the third largest nature reserve in Estonia. Dominated by forests and bogs, it aims to protect rare and endangered species, their habitats, and valuable natural landscapes. P~ohja-K~orvemaa (meaning North K~orvemaa) occupies the northern part of K~orvemaa, which itself forms the northern part of Transitional Estonia, a large forested and sparsely populated area spanning in northeast-southwest direction through Estonia, from Lahemaa through Soomaa to Latvia. The Senhor do Padr~ao also known as "Senhor do Espinheiro" or "Senhor da Areia", dating from the 18th century and marks the place where, according to legend, the image of Bom Jesus de Boucas appeared. This monument remains an important reference for the city and for the fishing community, with much of the religious devotion of the fishermen of Matosinhos and their families materializing here, such as the 1st of November when the monument is surrounded by thousands of candles burning in memory of fishermen killed at sea
