Whether or not one accepts A Course in Miracles as a religious work or not, the thought system is highly intellectual and sophisticated. It combines spiritual inspiration with deep psychological understanding of such concepts as belief systems, defense systems, and perception and identity. Its language is poetic and written in blank verse, which has led some to compare it to some of the world's great literature.

 

The course's concept of the miracle is also much richer than that found in our culture. It focuses away from the physical, emphasizing that the miracle is really about healing the mind, and that any physical healing that occurs is a side effect. It also broadens the definition of what a miracle can be, to include psychological and interpersonal healing that might take place in distinctly secular settings.

 

It packs such complex concepts as guilt, forgiveness, and true perception into its notion of the miracle, and extends it into areas of depth psychology and mysticism that are not usually associated with miracles at all. This enables the miracle to heal problems that might seem impossible, and to extend beyond the physical to such things as psychosomatic illness and conflict resolution.

 

Another major aspect of the Course is its emphasis on the need for forgiveness, and on the power of the miracle to transform the fear-based beliefs that produce the separation from God. The Course asserts that this need for salvation is universal, and that every separated soul must go through a similar process. It describes this as the "atonement plan" that was initiated by God to make it possible for each separate soul to return to Heaven.
