The Ancient Debate About Instructional Design

Equipping leaders for a task is not easy. Developing the leaders around you is usually not something that happens quickly. It requires a long term commitment of time and energy. Your level of commitment will greatly determine the level to which the leaders around you rise. Far too many leaders in business, sports, civic clubs and churches are under developed. It is the leader's job to make sure they do not stay this way. Before you begin however, make sure you are willing to tackle the task of Leadership Development.

My student was having a dilemma about his choice of career path. He had boldly gone with his heart, soul and spent his bank account on his dream. After blood, sweat and tears, he sadly returned home empty handed. He asked me why he would want to do something so badly, only to have it blow up clarity Training leadership his face? He did learn a valuable lesson, he made some new friends, but at the end of the day, the project just didn't work. But why?

The people that change things and make things happen, or that inspire others to move forward rarely do so because they mandate that their ideas or status to the people they connect with. They inspire and spark transformation through their passion for their company, idea, product, project, etc...That's because passion is contagious. Having a well positioned brand opens the door to a place of influence and impact. If you can't get genuinely excited about what you are doing, how do can you expect to have lasting impact and meaningful influence with people and in situations.

Several years ago I participated in a Leadership Development course with 20 other up and coming leaders. We were lead by two instructors who guided us over a 6 month period to explore our potential as leaders. The course required that we pick a project that we would find challenging and that would provide us an opportunity to use our leadership skills. I was in a unique position that in my job at that time I had no projects on the go so I chose to make myself the project.

Yes, the herd thins. Fewer restaurants, printers, clarity Training leadership, etc. The weak fall by the wayside. As long as you aren't one of them, this simply means more to go around to those left standing. And even in a much smaller market, that can feel pretty good. So, sometimes, just surviving can be a path to success.

We will never know how much it cost our business growth because we missed the seminars. However, if I had it to do over again, I still would have missed all the seminars to be able to watch my son play college football. They grow up so fast. At least I have those memories.

I have been trying several different ways to re-invent myself over the past several months. This has been a very interesting journey as I am listening to all kinds of people who state in very convincing terms that they have found the way to a new life for me. Every one of them have fallen short of showing me the way that really gets me excited and filled with hope.

Create templates. Emails, letters, forms and other documents that must be created or updated frequently can be systemized. For any new document, first review what already exists. Then copy, adapt and pull from previous efforts.

Envision your bold enterprise. Visualize your venture and answer the question, "What will this do for me?" Write down in detail the payoff you desire - more money, more free time, more happiness or all three. Embellish your vision with sensory detail. See, hear, taste and feel it. The more real it is to you, the more you'll believe in your ability to make it happen.

How, then, do managers transcend from a traditional, transactional approach to leadership, in which the manager negotiates with the subordinate: "Do this, and this is what I'll give you." Often, these are not explicit conversations, but rather implicit understandings. The employee knows that if he does 'this and this,' and not 'that and that,' he'll receive something in return. Does this method of 'leadership' build commitment from staff? Does it enroll the individual in a common mission and vision? Or is it oriented more towards compliance and implicit consent of not rocking the boat?

A bit of background before I begin and if you already knows this, feel free to skip this paragraph. We relocated to Indianapolis in 2007 after nearly two decades in San Diego. We purchased a 35-year-old home in a cute neighborhood on the Northeast side of Indianapolis. It wasn't a fixer-upper, but it needed some repairs as well as improvements in its middle age. I am the type of person who likes to do things myself, do them as green as possible and save as much money as I can. I am pretty typical, maybe even Typi-Kel.

Gee... what if I never went past my techno junk pile I found a 1200 baud, 2400 baud and some big floppy diskettes. If you are into Instructional Design, you are into technology by default. Don't' resist it, don't be intimidated, just learn as much as you can absorb in one area. You cannot be an expert in everything. Then find friends that know the other stuff and rely upon their expertise and help in those areas.
