Alcohol Consumption Can Trigger Modifications In The Architecture And Function Of The Blossoming Brain |
Alcohol can cause changes in the structure and operation of the blossoming brain, which continues to mature into a person's mid 20s, and it may have repercussions reaching far beyond adolescence.
In adolescence, brain development is defined by remarkable changes to the brain's architecture, neural connections ("electrical wiring"), and physiology. These changes in the brain disturb everything from emerging sexuality to emotionality and cognitive ability.
Not all parts of the adolescent brain mature at the same time, which may put an adolescent at a disadvantage in certain scenarios. The limbic regions of the brain develop sooner than the frontal lobes.
Ways Alcohol Alters the Human Brain
Alcohol affects a juvenile's brain growth in many ways. The effects of adolescent alcohol consumption on specific brain activities are summarized below.
Alcohol is a central nervous system sedative drug. Alcohol can seem to be a stimulant because, at the start, it suppresses the portion of the human brain that manages inhibitions.
CEREBRAL CORTEX-- Alcohol slows down the cerebral cortex as it processes details from an individual's senses.
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM-- When a person thinks of something he desires his body to undertake, the central nervous system-- the brain and the spinal cord-- sends out a signal to that portion of the body. Alcohol impedes the central nervous system, making the individual think, communicate, and move slower.
FRONTAL LOBES -- The human brain's frontal lobes are very important for planning, creating concepts, making decisions, and using self-control.
When alcohol impacts the frontal lobes of the human brain, a person may find it difficult to control his/her emotions and impulses. The individual may act without thinking or may even become violent. Consuming alcohol over an extended period of time can harm the frontal lobes permanently.
HIPPOCAMPUS-- The hippocampus is the part of the brain where memories are made.
When alcohol reaches the hippocampus, a person might have trouble recollecting something he or she just learned, like a person's name or a telephone number. This can happen after just one or two alcoholic beverages.
Drinking a lot of alcohol quickly can cause a blackout-- not having the ability to recall entire incidents, like what exactly she or he did the night before.
An individual may find it tough to learn and to hold on to information if alcohol injures the hippocampus.
CEREBELLUM-- The cerebellum is essential for coordination, ideas, and awareness. When alcohol goes into the cerebellum, a person may have difficulty with these abilities. After consuming alcohol, a person's hands might be so unsteady that they cannot touch or grab things properly, and they may lose their balance and fall.
HYPOTHALAMUS-- The hypothalamus is a little part of the brain that does an amazing number of the physical body's housekeeping tasks. Alcohol upsets the operation of the hypothalamus. After an individual drinks alcohol, blood pressure, appetite, being thirsty, and the impulse to urinate intensify while body temperature and heart rate decline.
MEDULLA-- The medulla manages the physical body's unconscious actions, like an individual's heartbeat. It also keeps the body at the best temperature. Alcohol in fact chills the physical body. Consuming a lot of alcohol outdoors in cold weather can cause an individual's body temperature to drop below normal. This harmful situation is called hypothermia.
A person might have trouble with these abilities when alcohol gets in the cerebellum. After drinking alcohol, a person's hands might be so unsteady that they cannot touch or grab things properly, and they may lose their equilibrium and tumble.
After a person drinks alcohol, blood pressure, hunger, being thirsty, and the desire to urinate increase while physical body temperature and heart rate decline.
Alcohol actually cools down the physical body. Drinking a lot of alcohol outdoors in cold weather conditions can trigger an individual's body temperature to drop below normal.
