Kendall Jenner's Glasses Will Remind You Of This Unexpectedly Cool '90s Trend

Среда, 15 Июня 2016 г. 06:22 + в цитатник

It's no secret that the '90s are making a fashion comeback. Everything from chokers to patched jeans have made their way back into style, and now it looks like even the most unexpected accessories are becoming cool again.Kendall Jenner wore micro glasses to Tyler The Creator's fashion show. Yes, really. Jenner is trying to make tiny specs a thing in 2016.

photos:celebrity dresses

First she made chokers an everyday staple. Next, she and her model friends brought sneakers for every occasion into vogue. Now she's bringing back micro glasses. I think it's safe to say that Jenner was born in the wrong era. Looking as '90s as possible from head to toe, the model sat front row at Tyler The Creator's fashion show with Kanye West. The two were a ray of sunshine in their brightly colored outfits, but Jenner's certainly got the most attention.

The 20-year-old opted for a tiny top and boyfriend-fitted yellow button jacket with matching culottes, but her micro glasses were the throwback of the moment. The two-sizes-too-small quirky shades that she "copped from a shoot," according to her website, sat on the end of her nose throughout the performance. I never thought this '90s trend would come back, but after seeing it on Jenner, I'm sort of glad that they did.

Kevin Winter/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty ImagesHer exposed bralette and body chain made the whole look all the more stylish as well.

Kevin Winter/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty ImagesShe looks like you could have plucked her right out of the '90s! Of course, the styling of her red lip and textured lob made it all feel modern.

If you're looking to score a pair of these micro glasses this summer, then you're in luck. Here are some options for you.

4. Clear Framed

5. Purple

Or you could fully commit to the '90s with this slanted lensed style.

6. Alien-Eye Shaped

If these aren't a '90s flashback then I don't know what is.

7. Dark & Tiny

Place these at the end of your nose and you'll be sitting pretty.

Designers brands criticized for dip into Islamic fashion

Суббота, 11 Июня 2016 г. 06:13 + в цитатник

Is it fashion's responsibility to ease acceptance of different identities; to foster tolerance and understanding - or to promote a specific aesthetic expression of liberty? This may seem like a ridiculously weighty question for an industry built on the supposedly superficial business of selling clothes, as opposed to political philosophies. But it is at the core of a debate roiling France. On the surface, the argument is about the trend - call it that - among a growing number of fashion brands to offer Islamic, or "modest" collections.

Shaz Kaiseruddin has launched the American Hijab Design Contest. Photo: HANDOUT, HO / HANDOUT

photos:red carpet dresses

The spark that seems to have ignited the flames is the introduction of a "burkini," a full-body swimsuit consisting of a long-sleeved tunic with integral hood and matching trousers, by Marks & Spencer. Though it has been available in certain international markets for three years, it went online in February, another in a series of such fashion initiatives from a variety of brands, all of which are now under fire.In 2014, DKNY created a Ramadan capsule collection of its more covered-up items (think jumpsuits, ankle-length shirtdresses and skirts) available in the Middle East.

A spiritual connection to the natural worldWisdom: quotes from 4 holy booksWant more mystery and wonder in your life? Make a place for itWisdom: quotes from 4 holy booksThat was followed the next year by similar ventures from Tommy Hilfiger and Uniqlo. Last year, H&M featured a model in a head scarf in its "Close the Loop" sustainable-fashion ad campaign, and Net-a-Porter devoted a section on its website to what it called a "Ramadan edit."Dolce & Gabbana has introduced a collection of floral print, lace and polka-dot abayas (loose-fitting full-length robes) with matching headscarves sold not only in the Middle East but also in select Dolce stores in London, Milan, Munich and Paris.Which meant that, along with the M&S bathing suit, such collections were no longer relegated to a specific geographical niche. They had penetrated the Western mainstream.

That evolution was largely greeted with applause, with Dolce in particular getting kudos for its work. "Why Dolce & Gabbana's Hijab and Abaya Line Is So Important," read a headline on the New York magazine website The Cut. "DKNY Just Launched a Collection for Ramadan. And It's Beautiful," BuzzFeed cried. But Laurence Rossignol, the French minister for women's rights, begged to differ. "What's at stake is social control over women's bodies," she said in an interview with BFMTV, the most popular news network in France. "When brands invest in this Islamic garment market, they are shirking their responsibilities and are promoting women's bodies being locked up."She then went even further, comparing Muslim women to "consenting slaves," but later recanted that part of her statement after a public outcry.

Still, it was as if the floodgates had opened.Shortly after her remarks, Pierre Bergé, co-founder of Yves Saint Laurent, gave an interview to the radio station Europe 1 in which he excoriated brands that made clothing aimed at the Islamic market."Creators should have nothing to do with Islamic fashion," he said. "Designers are there to make women more beautiful, to give them their freedom, not to collaborate with this dictatorship which imposes this abominable thing by which we hide women and make them live a hidden life." He then implied that the designers were exploiting a misogynist system that, for financial gain, forces women to hide their bodies: "Renounce the money and have some principles," he said.Philosopher Elisabeth Badinter, whom the French left wing weekly Marianne once called the country's "most influential intellectual," jumped on the bandwagon, calling in the newspaper Le Monde for a boycott of brands that sell Islamic fashion. All of this is playing out against a backdrop of increased fear in Europe.

Though France has had a long history of discomfort with clothing that demonstrates any religious identity - banning headscarves in public schools for both teachers and students, forbidding public servants from wearing the same and banning the niqab (a full-face veil showing only the eyes) entirely in public - the garment has remained a lightning rod for the basic argument about what freedom means when applied to fashion in liberal society. On one side are those who say the social contract demands that everyone eschew symbols of their personal belief systems in service of the secular collective; on the other, those who insist that freedom includes the freedom to wear whatever you want (and sell whatever you want). It didn't take long for those in the latter camp to attack the attackers right back.

A new hashtag was spawned, #rossignolresignation, and the Collective against Islamophobia in France (the CCIF) issued a news release stating that it was bringing a class-action lawsuit against Minister Rossignol for her statements.Sarah Dundarawy, a Saudi TV presenter living in Dubai, wrote in an email: "I graduated from Boston College in Boston, MA and did my masters at the London School of Economics in London, U.K. In general, I celebrity dresses modestly and when I am in Saudi I wear an Abaya out of respect for my culture and convenience.

Does that make me oppressed? Not beautiful? Of course not. As for the special collection of Abayas designed by Dolce & Gabbana, I saw it a nice gesture and an attempt to appeal to a large segment of the fashion market."Things have reached something of a standoff.Pointedly, the brands that started it all have done their best to stay out of the situation. None have issued public statements, though when asked, they are happy to provide anodyne emails from a "spokesperson."It's understandable. This is a complicated subject at the best of times, and these are the most fraught of times. And no brand wants to alienate a potential shopper. Yet this silence also is silly.

The history of fashion is, in many ways, about facilitating acceptance; creating a bridge between the unfamiliar or the challenging, be it religious or sexual or gendered or transgressive, and the everyday. It is arguably one of the things the sharp point of the industry does best, whether by transforming underwear into outerwear, putting women into pants and men into women's wear or otherwise redesigning the trappings of revolution. It forces confrontation, and by "fashionizing" what was hitherto seen as foreign, absorbs it, co-opts it and - to a certain extent - defangs it. Whether the motivation is moral or economic, in the end, the effect may be the same. And that is what matters. There will be more opportunities to address the issue because it is not going away anytime soon.

This couple’s wedding cake is total goals for everyone with a love of gaming

Вторник, 07 Июня 2016 г. 06:18 + в цитатник

While some opt for the more traditional, floral decorated three-tier wedding cake, this couple decided to use theirs to celebrate their love of gaming.

Posting the cake to Reddit, the guy instantly became inspiration for every lonesome soul who never thought they’d find their gaming soulmate, as well as giving inspiration to every gamer out therefor their future wedding plans.

The couple, who had known each other for over 20 years, decided it was time they tied the knot.

And what cake best summed up their shared passion of gaming? A Fallout cake, of course.

But as his bride’s more of a Skyrim girl, they had to incorporate both into the cake.

(Picture: Imgur/RapCatTheRappingestCat)

Other Reddit users loved the cake, with one saying: ‘You gotta divorce her and re-wife her, just for that cake!’

(Picture: Imgur/RapCatTheRappingestCat)

Others, however, were a little caught up on the whole 20 year thing. One said: Dude, 20 YEARS? What was the delay?’

(Picture: Imgur/RapCatTheRappingestCat)

But, if 20 years doesn’t say ‘I’m totally committed to you’, we don’t know what does. And as long as they’re happy, that’s all that matters.

Princess Diana's Totally '80s Favorite Dress Is Up for Auction – Plus Another Found at a Second-Hand Shop!

Понедельник, 06 Июня 2016 г. 06:09 + в цитатник

Princess Kate isn't the only royal with second-hand shop connections.

A tartan wool graduation dresses uk coat by Elizabeth Emmanuel that belonged to Princess Diana is one of two garments worn by the late princess that will be up for auction on June 14.

After receiving less-than-positive reviews when Diana wore it on an official trip to Venice in 1985, the sailor-collared dress coat ended up at a high-end second hand shop – dropped off in a bundle of unwanted clothing by Sarah Ferguson's mother, Susan Barrantes. Purchased by a lucky customer in 1990, the one-off piece is now expected to reach up to $21,641.

Also up for auction: a 1980s teal sequined dress designed by Catherine Walker, which is expected to reach approximately $144,340 at Kerry Taylor Auctions.

Diana loved the look so much she wore it three times. "It's a real razzle- dazzle number and it was unlike any other piece in her wardrobe," auctioneer Taylor tells PEOPLE, adding that the puff-sleeved creation was "really stylish and quite cutting edge at the time."

Commissioned by Diana shortly before an official State visit to Austria withPrince Charles, the figure-hugging design debuted on a night out with her husband at the Burgtheater in Vienna on April 14, 1986. Such was the close relationship between Walker and the princess that Diana didn't even see sketches of the dress, let alone try it on, before her trip. She later wore it to a charity ball in 1989 and again for a film premiere in 1993.

Thirty years later, the piece is being sold for a third time, after the death of the current owner, a private collector from Austria who "loved Princess Diana" and wanted the dress to return to the country in which it was first worn, says Taylor.

Princess Diana attends a gala at the Vienna Burgh Theatre during a visit to Austria in 1989.

It originally sold for $43,800 at Christie's in 1997 and later to the Austrian buyer for $108,206 in 2013, making the dress an impressive investment.

"More and more people are seeing that you are better off putting your money into something like this," says Taylor, noting, "They are unique one-off pieces and after all, there was only one Princess Diana."

An expert in high-end vintage fashion, Taylor has sold several of Diana's dresses over the years and says that interest is far from waning. "Diana was a style icon and whatever she wore one day, the rest of the world copied the next."

Food That's Gold: June: The wedding month

Пятница, 03 Июня 2016 г. 06:04 + в цитатник

Planning the details of a wedding is always an unbelievably stressful time in any bride’s world. The time of day sets the kind of wedding so that is sort of one of the first things to think about. Morning weddings used to be the norm and everything was over with by early afternoon. A beautiful setting for a brunch or a delightful lunch was the celebration.

photos:celebrity inspired dresses

Next came the afternoon affair which could be a simple cocktail party with hors d`oeuvres or a tea party outside with punch and finger sandwiches. If it was a late afternoon wedding then things change and it can become much more expensive. The venue is a dinner scene with either a buffet or a sit down gala that includes wines or champagnes, even an open bar for guests to enjoy.

Music is another big part of the celebration with live chamber music, a small band or even a DJ playing the favorite hits of the family. There is so much to do and so many decisions to be made and anything that can be made ahead of time should be done, as the last several weeks are really stressful. The venue guest tables are long, small or large rounds and the settings which include the porcelains, silverware, glassware, colors of the linens, the centerpieces and even the little gifts that are created for guests to take home have to be decided upon.

Little gifts that folks took home used to be rather simple as they consisted of small boxes with pieces of the groom’s cake or bride’s cake with small trinkets enclosed in the cake. The actual wedding cake was the one that was eaten at the wedding. Parts of the bride’s cake or remainders of the wedding cake were saved to be shared at the first anniversary or even the 25th. Seems as I remember, the cake was inedible and just a token presentation for the couple.

Nowadays, the small guest table gifts can be an assortment of unique things from little shooters of Tequila to homemade candies and even assorted kitchen items like containers of flavored salts. The little containers are the key to the decoration as once found make the decision for what it is to contain.

A small burlap bag can hold dried lavender with sprigs tied to the top or even small linen bags filled with tea blends. The cupcake shop had tiny cupcakes set in plastic boxes that held outstanding non edible decorated mini-cakes that were a remembrance to hang on the Christmas tree. Often the gifts are holders of pretty printed place cards with computers doing the work of calligraphy.

One of my favorite guest gifts are Mexican wedding cakes that can be decorated and placed in small see through plastic boxes tied with ribbons of wedding colors and holding the place cards.

Princess Diana's iconic sea-green evening gown will go under the hammer in London next month

Среда, 01 Июня 2016 г. 06:25 + в цитатник

One of Princess Diana's most iconic celebrity dresses will go under the hammer in London next month, when it is expected to fetch up to £100,000.

The sequinned sea-green evening gown was one of the Princess of Wales' wardrobe staples during the 1980s, and was worn by her to film premieres, state visits, and charity events.

The stunning evening gown is due to be sold by Kerry Taylor Auctions in Bermondsey on June 14 as part of the Passion for Fashion auction, which features haute couture and historic dress as well as Royal memorabilia.

The glamorous dress has been also listed on online marketplace thesaleroom.com ahead of the auction, giving bidders around the world the chance to compete to own a piece of Royal history.

The glitzy gown was designed for Princess Diana to wear during the state visit to Austria in 1986 by Catherine Walker, and it is estimated to sell for between £80,000 and £100,000.

Iconic: the dress was the only fully-sequinned gown in Princess Diana's 1980s wardrobe (Thesaleroom.com )

The sparkling dress, which was the only completely sequined gown in Diana's 1980s wardrobe, formed part of a large group order from Catherine Walker, which the Princess put in about a month before the state visit.

Princess Diana trusted her designer

so much that on this occasion she didn't even ask to see provisional sketches but just asked her to select and make the dresses on her behalf.

Princess Diana wore the stunning dress with a diamond and emerald choker necklace, which she had been given as a wedding present by H.M. The Queen Mother.

After debuting the dress at the Vienna Burgtheater in 1986, she was also photographed in it at a charity ball at Osterley House

to raise funds for the British Paraplegic Society, and on the red carpet to the 1993 film premiere of 'Biggles'.

The show-stopping outfit is one of two pieces of the Princess' wardrobe that are up for sale at the auction.

The second, a tartan wool daytime ensemble by the Emanuels, was worn by Diana in Venice in 1985 when she accompanied Prince Charleson an official visit to Italy.

And, moving from one type of Royalty to another, Madonna’s Jean Paul Gaulter iconic lame bodice will also go under the hammer at the auction.

The ensemble that the pop queen wore for her 'Blond Ambition' tour in 1990 in expected to reach between £25,000 and £35,000 when it is sold together with an autographed photograph of Madonna wearing the outfit on tour.

Also up for grabs is Björk's Alexander McQueen 'Kimono' dress, which she wore on the cover of her 1997 'Homogenic' album, and was hand-made in London by the McQueen studio.

The dress is expected to fetch between £15,000 and £25,000.

Kerry Taylor, of Kerry Taylor Auctions said: “I have been an auctioneer for over thirty years, and I can honestly say that this is quite simply one of the most extraordinary fashion auctions ever to take place anywhere. It includes everything from rare and historic royal pieces, to cutting-edge contemporary fashion from the collection of Björk.

"The two Princess Diana pieces we have in this auction, although similar in colour, couldn’t be more different. The sea-green sequined evening gown by Catherine Walker, 1986 is full-on Hollywood glamour, and by far one of the more show-stopping, sultry pieces from her 1980s wardrobe.

"In stark contrast, the tartan wool day ensemble by the Emanuels is warm, practical and lady-like. She wore it in Venice when she accompanied Prince Charles for an official visit to Italy in 1985. The press at the time unkindly likened it to a ‘horse-blanket’.

"Despite its more practical appearance, it is still very desirable and rare as examples of the Princess’s daywear, which does not often come onto the open market.”

The couple's 6-year-old daughter, Giselle, survived and was in stable condition Monday at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. She is expected to remain there for days, said Rosa Venegas, her aunt.

At least one other person in a third vehicle died, and three others were hospitalized after the crash.

"In 30 years as a firefighter and EMT, it was by far the worst scene I've been to," Sharon Fire and Rescue Chief Bruce VanderVeen said.

Rosa Venegas, 18, said her brother worked two jobs to support his family, his parents and her. She said the family all lived together in Delavan.

She said the couple and their children were on their way to Maria's sister's wedding in Sharon. The bride and groom only knew the family was delayed due to a crash and didn't learn of the severity until after the ceremony.

A funeral Mass was being planned for Friday, said the Rev. Angel Anaya, pastor at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Delavan.

The family has established a page on GoFundMe.com to raise money for expenses. His sister said Venegas worked for several years for Balistreiri Environmental and ran his own landscaping service. Flores worked for U.S. Bank in nearby Elkhorn.

The Walworth County Sheriff's Office initially reported Saturday that an eastbound pickup truck failed to stop at the intersection and was hit by a fully loaded semi going north on Highway K.

The collision sent both vehicles into the path of a southbound GMC Envoy driven by a Rockford, Ill., couple, identified Monday by the sheriff's office as Carol Terry, 67, who was killed, and Mark Terry, 68, who was flown to a Janesville hospital where he remained in critical condition.

The semi driver, Jerry Morris, 52, of Elkhorn, and his passenger, Kevin Grethe, 46, of Sparta, were also hospitalized. The Sheriff's Office's Monday update said their conditions remained the same. VanderVeen said one of the men had been released as of Monday.

The area is generally open and flat, with 55 mph speed limits on both roads. Just a year ago, a motorcyclist was killed at the same intersection by a semi after it entered Highway K without stopping. A neighbor said the stop sign for drivers westbound on Town Hall is often obscured by foliage from an adjacent tree nursery.

Ray Paez, a bilingual teacher who taught Giselle the last two years, said Monday he and school officials were scrambling to have grief counselors on hand when school is back in session Tuesday.

"It's devastating. I'm still reeling," said Paez. He said the area has very tight-knit Latino community, which he expects will do everything it can to support the Venegas family.

"They are a super-nice, hardworking family, and Giselle is just a dream of a student," he said.

VanderVeen, the Sharon Fire and Rescue chief, said it was also traumatic for the 30 or so emergency responders from more than a dozen agencies.

"We had seven people out there at first, and we saw we had eight victims. We were a bit overwhelmed," he said, thanking the many others who came to help.

Three helicopters were at the scene, along with four paramedic ambulances and two doctors. Mark Terry was flown to Janesville and Giselle to Wauwatosa. The third helicopter wasn't needed.

The intersection was blocked off until about 9 p.m. Saturday, VanderVeen said, as the semitrailer had to be unloaded before it could be removed.

He said there was a debriefing scheduled for Monday night, to work out both emotional and procedural aspects of the response.

"We're a small town. We don't get much for a long time. Then when we do, it's nasty," VanderVeen said. "We'll carry it a long time"

Wedding party ends in wild brawl in Sydney McDonald's carpark

Понедельник, 30 Мая 2016 г. 09:04 + в цитатник

A wedding celebration and reception were not enough for some Sydney guests, who finished their night off with a brawl in a McDonald’s car park.

The wedding party was supposed to be jovial but it was anything but in the Lidcombe takeaway chain’s carpark.

Two groups of nearly a dozen men traded blows in the video which shocked onlookers.

“Everyone was punching everyone, there was blood everywhere and people were getting dragged on the floor as well,” one witness said.

Video shows one man hitting the ground.

“After he got pushed on the ground all his mates just started hitting on the guy and there was a guy on the bonnet getting hammered into,” another witness said.

As fast as the brawl unfolded, it ends with one group leaving.

A witness said they quickly returned in cars though, driving through the car park, narrowly missing one person.

The other group then targeted people in the McDonald’s drive through, trying to get a car to give chase.

They failed after a woman intervened, tossing her bouquet aside in the chaos.

Brendan & Morgan's Wedding On 'Rich Kids Of Beverly Hills' Will Be Filled With Drama

Суббота, 28 Мая 2016 г. 09:06 + в цитатник

The Rich Kids of Beverly Hills may have had a great time in Vegas celebrating Dorothy's birthday, but, in this exclusive clip from the E! show, fans can see more of the upcoming Brendan Fitzpatrick and Morgan Stewart wedding drama. So far, it's Morgan's Bridezilla behavior that's been causing most of the problems between her and Brendan and alienating Dorothy, but it looks like, as the show gets closer to the actual wedding, the stress is starting to take its toll. At what should be the most fun part of the wedding — the bachelor and bachelorette parties — the clip teases a lot of conflict in store inthe upcoming Rich Kids Of Beverly Hills episodes.

photos:mermaid prom dresses

Bianca and Brendan have been at odds, and even though Bianca's brother is still close friends with Brendan, she hasn't spoken to her brother in years because of the conflict. So, she's definitely not going to be at the wedding, but in this clip, she sounds like she's out to "ruin" Morgan's life. That might be because of something Morgan said to protect Brendan, or maybe Bianca is protective of Dorothy after a bridesmaid related incident. In another episode, Morgan was so upset that Bianca asked her friends not to use Brendan as a real estate broker so clearly the drama between them all is just going to blow up even more.

The rest of the clip makes it sound like there might be a problem between Morgan and Brendan as well, surrounding the couple's chosen bachelor and bachelorette parties. I'm not sure how exactly those events could go so, so wrong... But, this won't actually wind up derailing the wedding, since E! Online reported they've already been officially married. Brendan and Morgan may have their issues, but they do really seem to be a good pair. But even so, clearly the road to the wedding was a bumpy one.

The End of the Office Dress Code

Пятница, 27 Мая 2016 г. 09:28 + в цитатник

Over the weekend an exhibition opened at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Entitled "Uniformity," it displays 71 pieces from the museum's collection of (surprise) uniforms, divided into four categories — military, work, school, sports — as well as a select group of the fashion looks they influenced, like Geoffrey Beene's 1967 sequined football jersey gown and Rei Kawakubo's 1998 military vest and pleated skirt for Comme des Garçons."I was interested in the inherent dichotomy between uniforms and fashion," said Emma McClendon, assistant curator of costume, and the organizer of the exhibition, "because while they should be antithetical to one another — the first is about conformity, the second about creativity — they are also deeply interrelated. It's ironic."But not as ironic as the fact that the show opens just as a number of recent disputes have underscored a somewhat different, and disruptive, reality. We live in a moment in which the notion of a uniform is increasingly out of fashion, at least when it comes to the implicit codes of professional and public life. Indeed, the museum may be the only place they now make sense.Read more from The New York Times:

Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver in a publicity still for Working Girl.

If once upon a time Melanie Griffith's character in "Working Girl" could manipulate viewers' assumptions about her job and background simply by swapping leather jackets and minidresses for greige suits, today it would be impossible. "We are in a very murky period," Ms. McClendon said.Just before the museum's show opened, for example, Britain was momentarily distracted from discussions over Brexit (leaving the European Union) by the news that Nicola Thorp, a temp worker, had been sent home from her receptionist job at PricewaterhouseCoopers for refusing to wear heels, as dictated by the mermaid prom dresses code of her agency, Portico. She took her cause public, starting a petition for a parliamentary hearing titled "Make it illegal for a company to require women to wear high heels at work." If you get more than 100,000 signatures, Parliament will consider the petition, and as of Tuesday afternoon she had 140,712. She created a Twitter account for her movement (#whoareyouwearing).Almost immediately, ITV, the British television network, conducted a poll on whether employers should be allowed to require women to wear heels; social media freaked out; and Portico announced it had changed its policy: Flats were now acceptable for women (men, of course, could always wear them).A few days later, sweatergate broke out in the United States when a weather forecaster on KTLA-TV in Los Angeles was handed a gray sweater to cover up a tank dress she was wearing on the air. She said it was a joke, courtesy of her co-anchor, but Twitter took offense, perceiving it as an attempt to control what women wear. All of this follows famous dress code brouhahas like the UBS scandal of 2010 when the Internet discovered that the Swiss bank had issued a 44-page booklet of guidelines for employee dress that included instructions on shoulder width and underwear shade.

Swim with the sharks and stay alive: Tips on the perfect biz pitch

Then there was the "flat shoe" uproar of 2015, when two women were supposedly banned from the red carpet in Cannes for not wearing heels. (The festival director denied the report on Twitter.)And earlier this year, Kansas State Senator Mitch Holmes was forced to issue a public apology for having included, in his guidelines for the Senate Ethics and Elections Committee, which he chaired, a rule for those appearing before the state panel that read: "Conferees should be dressed in professional attire. For ladies, low-cut necklines and miniskirts are inappropriate." No such specific guidelines were issued for men. Oops. This did not sit well with many."I have decided to retract the conferee guidelines," he said later in a statement, which also noted, "My failure to clearly specify that all conferees, regardless of gender, should strive to present themselves professionally is unacceptable."The slippery slope may have started as a gentle incline way back in the 1970s, and become a bit steeper during the Casual Friday movement of the 1990s and the success of the Facebook I.P.O. in 2012 with its hoodie-wearing billionaires. But today, we are speeding down it at breakneck pace, partly thanks to the hot-button conversation around gender equality, and fluidity."There has been a dramatic change very recently," said Susan Scafidi, a law professor at Fordham University and founder of the Fashion Law Institute. She noted that last December the New York City Commission on Human Rights announced new guidelines for the municipal human rights law that expressly prohibited: "Enforcing dress codes, uniforms, and grooming standards that impose different requirements based on sex or gender."

These high school students may know more about the economy than you

As a result, no employer may require men to wear ties unless they also require women to wear ties, or ask that heels be worn, unless both sexes have to wear them. And though this applies only to "official" dress codes, the trickle-down effect is inevitable."Dress is now open to the interpretation of the individual, rather than an institution," Ms. Scafidi said. This has created an even greater tension in the more ambiguous areas of office dress, especially as the boundaries between home and work become ever blurrier."There's a strain of thought that says an employee represents a company, and thus dress is not about personal expression, but company expression," Professor Scafidi said. "But there's a counter argument that believes because we identify so much with our careers, we should be able to be ourselves at work."And that has led to all sorts of complications. One person's "appropriate" can easily be another's "disgraceful," and words like "professional," when used to describe dress requirements, can seem so vague as to be almost meaningless. Kanye West wearing ripped jeans and a jeweled Balmain jacket at the Met Gala: cool or rude? Julia Roberts at the premiere of "Money Monster" at Cannes this year in bare feet: red carpet pioneer or a step too far?

This start-up is helping businesses get their products 'Made in the USA'

At The New York Times, Michael Golden, the vice chairman, told me: "We have customer-facing jobs and those that are principally internal. We ask employees to dress appropriately for the interactions planned for their day." But that can have broad interpretations. In the newsroom, people show up in everything from double-breasted suits to shorts; from sneakers and Birkenstocks to platform heels. All of which leaves us where? Confused, mostly. And fast trying to create our own codes, or parse those of the offices around us. Mark Zuckerberg, for example, is on the record as saying he wears the same gray T-shirt every day so that he can focus his energy on other decisions.Ms. McClendon acknowledges that she tends to wear "all black, pretty much every day, and sculptural shapes — it's the museum uniform." Professor Scafidi said, "My business uniform is a black jacket with a fitted, knee-length sheath, classic 100-millimeter single-sole pumps, and usually our logo pin — my equivalent of armor, arms and insignia, respectively."Indeed, according to Ms. McClendon, uniforms evolved for a reason: "They fulfill a need to identify your place in the world," for the wearer and the observer. At least when they are easy to read. And part of the idea behind the F.I.T. show, she said, was to "put visitors in the mind-set to consider uniform trumpet mermaid prom dresses more broadly, and how it impacts their own lives."In other words, to live an examined life when it comes to your wardrobe and your workplace. Because these issues are only going to get more complicated."We are moving into an era where personal expression is going to trump the desire to create a corporate identity," Professor Scafidi said. "It's a huge power shift." And it has already begun.

Dream come true garden wedding at Hillbrook Club: Cleveland wedding and engagement photos

Четверг, 26 Мая 2016 г. 09:04 + в цитатник

Brooke Takacs always dreamed of having her wedding at theHillbrook Club in Chagrin Falls growing up.

photos:mermaid prom dresses

She was born and raised near the area and on August 8, 2015, her childhood wish came true. She married William Slater in a romantic garden ceremony surrounded by close family and friends. Although the couple currently resides in Boston, MA, they knew that their wedding weekend was a wonderful opportunity to show off Cleveland to their out of town guests.

Takacs and Slater met in New York City on Halloween night in 2011. Their relationship grew through the years and they even have an adorable puppy named Henry together.

Their outdoor wedding took place in a natural setting surrounded by an arrangement of flowers by Urban Orchid. The stunning bride wore a Monique L'Hluillier gown purchased at L'Elite Bridal and the suits were by J.Crew. Wild Flour Bakery made the cake and Chagrin Valley Entertainment and the Athena Strings provided the entertainment.

Edmonton woman makes dress out of blood

Среда, 25 Мая 2016 г. 10:02 + в цитатник

Melissa Trotter has always loved horror movies. That's why it didn't seem all that out of the ordinary to spend the day throwing blood at her naked friend a few weeks ago.

There was a point to the macabre spectacle: a photo.

"I had seen milk dresses — pictures of photographers making mermaid prom dresses out of milk and other liquids," said Trotter. "I thought 'huh, I should do that with blood sometime,' and I did."

Trotter said she called her friend Anja Love, a model, and said, "Blood dress, you in?"

Just like that, it was on.

Edmonton photographer Melissa Trotter said that she has always been fascinated with macabre imagery. (Supplied)"We took her out to the field," said Trotter. "Her sister Sherri Landsman had done the makeup for her and was my official blood thrower, and I took shots of the blood hitting her body."

The blood was created from water, food colouring, icing sugar and cocoa powder.

Apparently the model didn't complain about all the sticky liquid being thrown on her repeatedly. But she did get cold at times — it is Edmonton in spring after all.

In order to create the effect, Trotter had to use 10 different photos layered on top of each other.

Trotter has been doing photography professionally for about two years. She recently opened her company, Stolen Innocence, two months ago.

The picture has gone viral, seen over a million times on the photo sharing site Imgur.

Trotter said the photo fits in with the darker and alternative themes she explores with her work.

"I just love having something creepy and weird but still making it kind of high fashion."

Everything We Know About Mariah Carey's Wedding

Вторник, 24 Мая 2016 г. 09:02 + в цитатник

We’re not surprised the intimate details of Mariah Carey’s upcoming wedding to James Packer remain a mystery — she calls herself the elusive chanteuse, after all. That said, we do know a few key things about the diva’s third and sure-to-be most glamorous ceremony yet. As they say, third time’s a charm, right?

Everything We Know About Mariah Carey's Wedding (So Far)

Since there are a lot of rumors circulating the internet, we thought we’d set the record straight about what you can expect from the best-selling female artist of all time. Yes, the wedding will likely air on Mariah’s World, MC’s new reality show (er, sorry, docu-series), sometime this year, but who wants to wait that long? Exactly. So read on for everything we know so far, and keep checking back for updates.

1. Sorry, but Carey will NOT be singing at the reception. And really, who can blame her? Would you want work on your wedding day?

2. “F—ing nobody” is good enough to sing at Carey’s wedding (her words, not ours). Personally, we’d love for Beyoncé to show up and reprise her rendition of “At Last.” The diva did recently hint at a collaboration, plus Bey and Mimi are said to be good friends. Stranger things have happened, right?

3. Jennifer Lopez will NOT be in attendance. Carey doesn’t know her.

4. There will be no exotic animals present at Carey’s nuptials. We have no idea where this rumor started, but considering Mimi is a hardcore animal (read: Jack Russell Terrier) lover, we never took it too seriously. Plus, we can’t imagine it would smell too pleasant. Call us crazy, but we doubt a woman who travels with her own personal lighting crew would be down for such a (literal) circus.

5. Carey’s mermaid prom dress will probably not be white. “This is number three, darling,” she recently told E!. “We did that number.” Fun fact: Mimi wore her OG Vera Wang wedding gown (from her 1993 marriage to Tommy Mottola) in the video for “We Belong Together.” The more you know...

6. Her dress will be custom-made. Because, Mariah Carey.

7. Her dress is being made as we speak. Don’t worry, cameras were there during her fitting to capture all the action for Mariah’s World.

8. This wedding will not be as elaborate as her other two — though it will still be somewhat traditional. Turns out, Packer has also been married twice before, so he’s not interested in something too over-the-top either. “We are not doing a big wedding because he did two big weddings, and it’s kind of like, ‘I’ve done a big wedding [too],’” Carey told E! soon after getting engaged. “We would rather make it beautiful but humble."

Traveling prom dress sisterhood honors cancer victim

Четверг, 12 Мая 2016 г. 11:30 + в цитатник

"The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" now has a real-life version: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Prom Dress.

The last time many of Catherine Malatesta's friends saw her, she was wearing a huge smile and the deep blue, shimmery MarieProm yellow prom dresses at her junior prom.

Four days later, battling a rare cancer, she went into the hospital and never left.

Now, four of her friends are honoring her by wearing that dress to their own proms, a gracious gesture her mother named after "Traveling Pants." And, like the pair of jeans in the books and movies that magically fits four girls of different shapes and sizes, Catherine's dress works for all of them, with only temporary hemming for two girls.

"When each girl tried it on, it fit each one of them beautifully despite all having very different body types," said Catherine's mother, Jennifer Goodwin. "It is uncanny."

In this May 29, 2015, photo provided by Jennifer Goodwin, Catherine Malatesta, center, poses with Lauren Hourican, left, and Molly Mahoney, right, before the junior prom at Arlington High School in Arlington, Massachusetts. There won't be any scheduling conflicts; the girls go to different schools, and their proms are on different dates. Another friend of Catherine's already has asked to wear the dress to her prom next year, while Catherine's seventh-grade cousin has asked Goodwin to save it for her prom in a few years.

"It's a way of keeping her with me," said Jillian Danton, 17, who wore the dress to her junior prom at Arlington High School in April. "All of us being able to have this piece of her is healing."

Catherine was a bubbly girl with an easy self-confidence and a silly sense of humor. She loved to act in school plays, taught religious education to first-graders, gladly debated anyone on any topic and was the life of the party.

"Everyone knew her as the nice girl who made people laugh," said Carly Blau, a friend from summer camp who plans to wear the dress to her senior prom next month at Beverly High.
