Эссе на английском “Peace, like war, can succeed only where there is a will to enforce it, and where there is available power to enforce it” —Franklin

What does peace mean nowadays? We live in an ignorant period of time, in which many humans are safe and live in comfortable homes. Yet, does this mean we live in peace? In my humble opinion, “peace” has to be in every part of the world, not only in certain parts throughout the world. However, one must also wonder, is such a seemingly daunting task even possible?
Of course, people are different and a lot of facts have influenced them for centuries, but I think that in general, everybody understands what is meant by the word “peace”. As for me, it means amicable and peaceful coexistence among humans.
Enduring peace in the world has no chance of success unless the nations around the world are willing to cooperate in winning it and maintaining it. Peace symbolizes a utopian world, which seems to be a pleasant place to live, but is also very hard to attain. That means that everybody should make efforts to attain peace – by advocating non-violence and speaking out in favour of peace to their political representatives — if they want to live in a better and more peaceful world.
A quarter of a century ago, we tried to save their freedom and create a better society, but failed to organize the kind of world in which future generations could live – the primarily goal being freedom. It doesn’t mean that people at the time did something wrong, though it also seems the people in charge of society at the time – as well as average citizens who should have influenced their decisions – did not think deeply enough about future generations in order to create a better society.
Countries around the world shouldn’t forget about several of the main principles of peaceful coexistence. These principles are connected and influence one another. The most important of these principles are mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, and non-interference in the internal affairs of states. These three principles are the norms that help create a basis for diplomatic relationships between countries. It should be also mentioned that all countries should develop cooperation with the help of respect to other countries and equality. In my opinion, peaceful coexistence should be the main aim for all countries, and these principles are the three most important ways in which peaceful coexistence can be attained by all countries around the world.
Given all the wars wars and destruction around the world, it is somewhat hard to judge whether or not a worldwide peace – or even regional peace in some parts of the world, as Western Europeans have attained for quite a long time due to the European Union – is realistic. Nevertheless, there are still a lot of people who believe in non-violence and the profit of sorting out disagreements through peaceful negotiations. Some young minds have become aggressive; for example, it is common to find teenagers fighting in battles within Syria. This is because they find people around them adopting violent means to accomplish tasks. This is similar to the old adage, “One rotten apple in a basket can ruin all the other apples present in the basket”. However, one can hope that these rotten apples can be discarded of in the future and that Syria, and other countries experiencing civil strife/war can eventually live in tranquil peace.
Despite all that was mentioned, I want to say that in the coming days and years, all people have to work for a just and honourable peace – as well as a durable peace – just as we work and fight for total victory in war. We can and we will reach this peace, because we have to strive for perfection. Of course, mistakes can be made, but humanity must learn from those mistakes and never stop moving forward until that perfection is reached.
