Another Crochet Heart shaped Animal – Caterpillar. Make this adorable Caterpillar Applique from crocheted hearts. Crochet hearts according to instruction and then just sew hearts together!

Abbreviations:

Ch – chain
DC – double crochet
Rnd - round
SC- single crochet
Sl St – slip stitch
St (Sts) – stitch (stitches)
SC2tog – two single crochet together

Finished Size: Green Caterpillar is about 3 -1/2" long, Rainbow Caterpillar is about 4" long.

Materials:

- cotton crochet thread size 10
- crochet hook size 6/1.8 mm

1. For Green Caterpillar with no feet:
With cotton crochet thread size 10 in red and hook 6/1.8 mm make 5 Medium size Hearts (see Instruction for the Crochet Hearts Applique) for the body and one Medium size Heart with Antennae for the Head.
To make Heart with Antennae, make Rnd 1 as instructed for the Medium size Heart (see Instruction for the Crochet Hearts Applique), make Rnd 2 as follow:

Rnd 2. Ch 3, SC into next St; making first Antenna - Ch 7, working in the 2nd and 3rd Ch from the hook - SC2tog, Sl St into each of next 4 Ch – this completes the first Antenna; 2 SC into each of next 2 Sts, SC into each of next 4 Sts, Ch 1, DC into next St (Heart point), Ch 1, SC into each of next 4 Sts, 2 SC into each of next 2 St; making second Antenna - Ch 7, working in the 2nd and 3rd Ch from the hook - SC2tog, Sl St into each of next 4 Ch – this completes the second Antenna; SC into next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center, Ch 1.

2. For Rainbow Caterpillar with feet you need to make 6 Hearts with feet for the body. To make Heart with foot, make Rnd 1 as instructed for the Medium size Heart (see Instruction for the Crochet Hearts Applique), make Rnd 2 as follow:

Rnd 2. Ch 3, SC into next St, 2 SC into each of next 2 Sts, SC into each of next 4 Sts, Ch 1, DC into next St; making Foot – Ch 6, Sl St into 2nd Ch from hook, Sl St in next Ch, 2 SC in next Ch, SC in each of next 2 Chs, Sl St into top of last DC – the Foot is now complete; Ch 1, SC into Ch-1 space, SC into each of next 3 Sts, 2 SC into each of next 2 St, SC into next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center, Ch 1.

3. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

4. Using my picture as a guide, sew hearts in a pattern overlapping the adjacent ones.

5. Make 2 eyes with black 11/0 glass seed beads or beads of your choice.
