This booklet features 17 beautiful, amazing vintage handbags to crochet. These patterns are JUST GORGEOUS!! This booklet was first published in 1945 by The Spool Cotton Company, but crocheted handbags are now back in style! The only problem is that the newer pattern booklets don't have patterns with such detail.

BAG-Front: Starting at center with Beige, ch 8. 1st rnd: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch; working across opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across. 2nd rnd: (3 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc) twice. 3rd to 16th rnds inc1: (Sc in sc to center sc of next 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc) 4 times; sc in sc to end of rnd. Break off.

MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS KNIT CRO-SHEEN, 4 balls of Beige, 1 ball of Hunter’s Green ... Bone Crochet Hook No. 6 ... ⅓ yard each of buckram and matching green felt for lining ... 2 snap fasteners.

Use 4 threads throughout.

GAUGE: 4 sts make 1 inch; 4 ½ rnds make 1 inch.

GUSSET and STRAP ••• Starting at short end, with Green, ch 4. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until piece measures 29 inches. Break off.

Sew ends of gusset between the 2 short sides of bag to within 1 ½ inches of top. With right sides facing, place bottom in place between lower edges of bag. Using Green and working through both thicknesses, make a rnd of sc, thus joining pieces. Cut a piece of cardboard for bottom, then line bag with buckram and felt. Sew snap fasteners in place at top. Turn the front 1 ½ inches over for a flap and crease.

 

Number 2711 Purse

FRONT: Starting at center, with Blue, ch 4. Join. 1st rnd: 10 sc in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 3rd rnd: Sc in each sc around. 4th rnd: 2 sc in each sc around (40 sc). 5th and 6th rnds: Sc in each sc around. 7th rnd: * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around (60 sc). 8th, 9th and 10th rnds: Sc in each sc around.

CHANGE PURSE ••• Work as for Front until 5 rnds are complete. 6th rnd: Ch 5, skip 5 sc, sc in each sc around. 7th rnd: Sc in next 5 ch, sc in each sc to end of rnd. Sl st in next sc. Break off. With Red, make a chain 14 inches long. Break off and whip around edge of Change Purse.

TONGUE ••• Starting at center with Blue, ch 15. 1st row: Sc in 10th ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc, sc in next 3 ch, 2 sc in next 3 ch, sc in next 3 ch. Working on opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each sc across to first 2-sc group, 2 sc in next 6 sc, sc in each sc across. Break off. With Red, make a chain 8 inches long. Break off, Whip around edges of Tongue.

GUSSET and STRAP ••• Starting at center with Blue, ch 155. 1st rnd: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch. Working across opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in each sc to next 3-sc group, 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in each sc to end of rnd. 3rd rnd: Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in each sc to next 2-sc group at opposite end, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in each sc to end of rnd. 4th rnd: Sc in each sc around. Leaving 2 ½ inches of Gusset piece free, pin Gusset between Front and Back (have buttonhole at center top of Back), leaving 9 ½ inches free at top. Working through both thicknesses, make sc in each sc around, joining Gusset to Bag. Overlap ends of Strap and sew together.

Line bag with buckram and lining material. Sew Change Purse to center of Front, leaving 5 ½ inches free at top (buttonhole side). Sew straight edge of Tongue in place.

SMALL BUTTON ••• With Red, ch 10. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until piece measures 2 inches. Break off. Cover a 2 inch piece of pencil with felt and then sew small button piece over this. Ch 15 and sew an end of chain around button. Sew opposite end to Bag 1 inch above Tongue. .

LARGE BUTTON ••• With Red, ch 12. Complete as for Small Button. Sew free end of chain to Front opposite buttonhole.


 


Number 2712 Purse

BAG: Starting at side, ch 63. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. 2nd to 52nd rows inc1: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Break off at end of 52nd row.

MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS KNITCRO-SHEEN, 4 balls of Turquoise ... Bone Crochet Hook No. 6 ... ⅓ yard each of buckram and felt for lining ... 2 yards of ribbon.

Use 4 threads throughout.

GAUGE: 4 sts make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

BAG ••• Starting at side, ch 63. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. 2nd to 52nd rows incl: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Break off at end of 52nd row.

Fold Bag in half. Attach thread in the 8th sc from top. Working through both thicknesses, thus joining edges, make sc in each sc to fold. Break off. Join other side in the same manner. Line bag with buckram and lining material.

TOP (Make 2) ••• Starting at center, ch 16. 1st rnd: Sc in 8th ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 7. Do not turn. 2nd rnd: Working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in next 9 sts, sc in next 2 ch, 2 sc in next 3 ch, sc in next 2 ch, sc in next 9 sc, sc in next 2 ch, 2 sc in next 3 ch, sc in next 2 ch (38 sc). 3rd rnd: Sc in next 11 sc, 2 sc in next 6 sc, sc in next 13 sc, 2 sc in next 6 sc, sc in next 2 sc (50 sc). 4th and 5th rnds: Sc in each sc around. Sl st in next sc. Break off.

Using top as a pattern, cut out 2 cardboard pieces and 2 felt pieces. line each top with felt, inserting cardboard piece between. Cut holes in cardboard and felt to correspond with holes in top. Mark the top center at each side of bag and make inverted pleats on each side of center, making pleats deep enough so that top of bag measures same as long side of top. Sew pleats in place. Sew pleated edges to a long side of top. Cut ribbon into lengths of 31 and 41 inches. Draw ribbon through the 4 holes in top, drawing each ribbon from opposite sides. Tie longer ribbon in a bow. Sew ends of shorter ribbon together.

With right sides facing, pin Gusset around bottom of Front from 3-sc group to 3-sc group. Working through both thicknesses, make sc evenly across long sides. Join Back in same way.

ROSE (Make 2) ••• Starting at center, ch 5. Join. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 11 dc in ring. Sl st in top st of ch-3. 2nd rnd: * Ch 3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc. Repeat from * around, join (6 loops). 3rd rnd: In each loop make sc, half dc, dc, half dc and sc. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 1, * sc on back of bar of next dc, ch 5. Repeat from * around. Join. 5th rnd: In each ch-5 loop make sc, half dc, dc, tr, dc, half dc and sc. Join. 6th rnd: Ch 2, * sc in back of bar of next tr, ch 7. Repeat from * around. Sew 3 groups of 2 leaves at edge of 3rd rnd on each side of bag. Sew a Rose to each center on each side of bag.

RING (Make 8) ••• Make 16 sc over each bone ring. Sl st in 1 st sc. Break off.

Sew rings evenly across top of bag.

Cut a strip of buckram the size of gusset and tack on wrong side. Line bag with felt. Draw ribbon twice through rings and tie ends in a bow.

With right side facing, fold bag piece in half and mark each side of fold with a pin. On edge of bag, mark a point 2 inches on either side of center fold. Now make a pleat by inserting center fold back to marks. Pin in place. Pin opposite side in same way. Starting at fold and, working through both thicknesses, make sc in each sc across pleat, sc from pleat across 6 inches of side. Break off. Join other side in the same way.

Sew ribbon around top of bag on wrong side. Line bag with buckram and lining material, inserting zipper at top. Sew tab in place. Sew handle around center of bag, drawing buckle through one end of handle.

With right sides facing, pin Gusset evenly around two curved ends and one long side of Bag Pieces. Working through both thicknesses, make a rnd of sc, thus joining Gusset to Bag Pieces. Line bag and Top with buckram and lining material. With right side facing, hold one long side of Top across back center opening at top of Bag. Working through both thicknesses, make sc in each sc across long side of Top.

HANDLE ••• Starting at short end, ch 7. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until piece measures 26 inches in all. Break off. Sew the long sides of piece together to form a Handle.

LOOP ••• Same as Handle until piece measures 12 inches in all. Complete as for Handle.

STRAP (Make 2) ••• Ch 13. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Break off.

Sew an end of handle to each side of 1st rnd on back of bag. Sew strap around handle 3 inches up from joining. Join loop in a similar way to front of bag. Handle pulls through loop.


 

Number 2716 Purse

Starting at center with yarn, ch 4. Join. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 11 dc in ring. Join with a sl st in 3rd st of ch-3. Drop yarn. 2nd rnd: Draw cotton through st on hook, ch 1, 2 sc in joining st, (sc in next 2 dc, 3 sc in next dc) 3 times; sc in next 2 dc, sc in joining st. MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS OR CLARK’S O.N.T. PEARL COTTON, Size 5, 6 balls of Hunter’s Green ... CHADWICK’S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 3 balls (1 oz. balls) of Wood Brown ... Bone Crochet Hook No. 5 ... 9 inch zipper ... ⅓ yard each of buckram and felt for lining ... A ring, 1 ½ inches in diameter.

Use wool single and cotton double throughout.

BAG PIECE ••• Starting at center of bottom with Brown, ch 31. 1st rnd: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch. Working across opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across (62 sc). 2nd rnd: 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in each sc to next 3-sc group, 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in each sc to end of rnd (68 sc). 3rd rnd: Sc in each sc around. Drop Brown. 7th rnd: Same as 5th rnd. 8th rnd: Draw Brown through loop on hook. Ch 3, dc in joining st, * skip 2 sc, sc in next sc 2 rows below, skip 1 sc, 4 dc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. Repeat the last 4 rnds (5th to 8th rnds incl) until there are 8 rnds of shells. Now work as before, making only 3 dc instead of 4 dc in each shell and skipping only 1 sc after each shell until there are 4 rnds of 3-dc shells. Make a rnd of sc in Green and 2 rnds of sc in Brown. Sl st in 1st sc. Break off.

HANDLE ••• With Brown, ch 40. Draw chain through ring, join. 1st rnd: Sc in each ch around. 2nd to 5th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around. Sl st in next sc. Break off. With Green, ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Break off. Sew this chain around Handle above ring.

TAB ••• With Brown, ch 16. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: Sc in each sc across. Break off. Draw through ring and sew ends together.

Cut a piece of cardboard for bottom, then line bag with buckram and lining material. Sew zipper and tab in place.

MOTIF: Ch 6. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 20 dc in ring. Sl st in 1st dc. Ch 1, turn. 2nd rnd: Sc in back loop of each dc around. Sl st in 1st sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd rnd: Sl st in back loop of st where sl st was made on 1st rnd, ch 3, in same place make dc, ch 3 and 2 dc, * dc in free loop of each of next 4 sts on 1st rnd, in next free loop make 2 dc, ch 3 and 2 dc.

MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS KNIT CRO-SHEEN, 3 balls of White, Ecru or Cream, or 5 balls of any color ... Steel Crochet Hook No. 5 ... ½ yard of crinoline ... 1 yard of lining material ... 11 inch zipper.

GAUGE: Each motif measures about 1 ¾ inches square.

Use thread double throughout.

MOTIF ••• Ch 6. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 20 dc in ring. Sl st in 1st dc. Ch 1, turn. 2nd rnd: Sc in back loop of each dc around. Sl st in 1st sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd rnd: Sl st in back loop of st where sl st was made on 1st rnd, ch 3, in same place make dc, ch 3 and 2 dc, * dc in free loop of each of next 4 sts on 1st rnd, in next free loop make 2 dc, ch 3 and 2 dc. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in top st of starting ch-3. Ch 1, turn. 4th rnd: Sc in back loop of each st around. Sl st in 1st sc. Break off. Make 80 motifs in all.

Sew motifs together as shown on chart, catching only the free loop of sts on 3rd rnd (thus allowing ridge to stand). Cut 2 pieces of lining material same as crocheted piece (including points). Cut crinoline ¼ inch smaller all around. Face crinoline with one piece of lining material. Cover other side of crinoline with lining material, turning in all edges and sewing with slip sts all around. Sew lining to wrong side of crocheted piece. Fold piece in half (lining inside) and pin top edges together. Fold in 4 motifs at each end to form gussets (dotted lines on chart). Sew side edges. Sew zipper along opening.

LOOP ••• 1st row: Ch 5. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 5 inches. Break off. Sew long edges together. Sew ends together, forming a loop. Sew this end of loop to zipper pull. Make 2 motifs and sew them together back to back. Sew one corner of joined motifs to free end of loop.

 


Knitting Patterns

Number 2725 Purse

BAG PIECE (Make 2): Starting at center, cast on 120 sts. 1st row: K across. 2nd row: P across. 3rd to 6th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 7th and 8th rows: K across. These 8 rows constitute Pattern. Work in pattern until 6 ridges have been made, ending with 2nd row.

MATERIALS: CHADWICK’S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 6 balls (1 oz. balls) of Paddy Green ... Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 4 (3 ½ mm. size) ... 2 belt buckles ... ¾ yard each of buckram and felt for lining.

GAUGE: 5 ½ sts make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.

BAG PIECE (Make 2) ••• Starting at center, cast on 120 sts. 1st row: K across. 2nd row: P across. 3rd to 6th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 7th and 8th rows: K across. These 8 rows constitute Pattern. Work in pattern until 6 ridges have been made, ending with 2nd row.

To Shape Gusset: 1st row: K 69, k 2 tog, turn. 2nd row: P 19, P 2 tog, turn. 3rd row: K 19, k 2 tog, turn. Working in pattern, repeat 2nd and 3rd rows of Gusset until 48 sts remain. Then k 3 tog (instead of k 2 tog) until 20 sts remain. Bind off.

HANDLE ••• Cast on 14 sts. Work in pattern until Handle measures 36 inches. Bind off.

Block and press bag pieces and handle. Turn bag pieces inside out and make paper pattern to fit exactly. Cut buckram from pattern, cut lining ½ inch larger all around. Sew lining pieces over buckram, turning back ½ inch allowance all around. Sew bag pieces together at cast on edges, working from wrong side. Sew both bag pieces and lining pieces together. Turn bag right side out, blind st lining in place. Fold top of gusset toward inside of bag and sew in pleat at top. Line handle with buckram and lining material. Cover buckles with buttonhole stitch and slip over handle. Sew handle over center seam of bag, moving buckles to top of bag. Sew short ends of handle together.
