St. Hyppolite -Area in stitches: 415 x 227 - During the 17th Century band samplers were worked to provide an easy method of laying down design ideas as printed patterns were virtually unobtainable. These early samplers were often produced by young women on behalf of professional or adult needlewomen. Many surviving examples of original 17th century band samplers have been found in extremely good condition as they were probably kept rolled and stored away from natural light when not being used.

I would like to copy this one..... Although we have been unable to positively identify Lydia Hope this finely wrought piece is one of a known group of distinctive samplers clearly worked under the guidance of the same teacher and is almost identical to the Rebecca Cullin sampler. Of six known related examples genealogical research has revealed possible birth dates for girls in the Lincolnshire, Nottingham and Leicestershire areas.
