Topic #15. Which english-speaking country would u like to visit and why?

If I had an opportunity to choose which english-speaking country to visit I would rather
say Great Britain, the motherland of English language.
This small island state became the great empire with a lot of colonies and a developed
trade in the 19th century. English has become an international language of the 20th
century. Colonies set up by English settlers in the North America grew into powerful
states. In 1949 Britain and former colonies founded the Common,wealth.
Great Britain is an unusually beautiful country. It consists of 4 parts. England, Scotland,
Wales and Nortern Ireland. In Great Britain one can find any types of scenery; green
valleys, waterfalls, mountains, vast plains, green hedges. The Lake District, Highlands
in Scotland, Brighton and Bath always attract a lot of holiday-makers. U can admire
remarkable Stonhenge, a mysterious historic plate in the UK. Oxford and Cambridge
are famous for their universities founded in the 11th century. It would be interesting to
watch the lifes~vle of the English students. Stratford-upon.Avon is the birth place of
great playwrigh~wiIliarn Shakespeare. It is very picturesque place too. A lot of tourists
come to visit the capital of the UK, London. The Tower of London, the City, Houses of
Parliament, the Trafalgar square, St. Paul's Cathedral stand in the range of the most
wonderful sites in the world.
The British museum in London contains the most important collections in Britain. The
National Gallery, the Tate gallery, the National porfrat gallery are the most famous art
galleries.
It is rather difficult to understand the British way of ruling country. Great Britain is a
Constitutional monarchy. The head of the state is the Queen but in fact she doesn`t rule
the country. The Queen is a simbol of the country? history & traditions/ There are many
interesting traditions connected with the Queen and the Royal family. For example the
changing of the Guards near Buckingham palace or the ceremony "The Queen in the Parliament".

The real power in the country belongs to the British Parliament and the British
government with the Prime minister in the head. Great Britain is a democratic country,
it has the oldest parliament in the world so the democratic traditio~ are very old too.
So I would like to visit Great Britain, to admire its wonderful beauty and to imrove my
English of course.

Why do people take up foreign languages?

There are many people~' in the world, and most of them have their own
languages. Some languages are very difficult because of their grammar and
phonetics, while other languages are easier. But anyway leaning a foreign
language is a difficult task which takes a lot of time and energy. But people all
over the world study foreign languages because there are many reasons for that.
First of all, nowadays no man can be considered an educated one without any
knowledge of development and new inventions in his field. We live in the era
when the informational overflow is so great that most demand to a specialist now
is not to know everything in his field, but to be able to find the necessary
information. More and more often it is possible to keep up with the world
standards only through reading articles, journals and book foreign languages
That's why specialists study the languages of the highly developed countries such
as France, German and USA. The most important of these languages is English
language, because a lot of people speak English as a foreign language, many
scientists write their articles in it. English is now the language used in computers.
About half of the post and scientific books arc in English. English is the official
language of many international organizanons such as the Olympic Committee, the
Organization of the United Nations and. so on,
The knowledge of foreign languages help people understand each other
when they travel. French arid English are the ianauages of international
communication. Many people, whose languages arc different, can understand each
other if they speak English or French. Our cities are visited by millions of tourists.
If one know a forciun language, he can help tourists around the city.
Another reason worth being ment:oned is that it is interesting to learn
language, to learn the origins of words. When you learn a foreign language, you
understand, your own language better, because you can compare the two
languages. You learn about the words which have can from other languages in to
Russian. On the other hand, learning a language is learning the life of other
countries. The pupils learn about the geography, history and arts of the countries
where some foreign language is spoken.
Now the knowledge of English is considered a necessary feature of a good
employee. Those who want to find an interesting and a well-paid job must know
English. But their chances are higher if they know two or three languages.

Some people believe that the best part of one's life consists of one's friends. Do you
share this point of view? Give your reasons.

I agree with this statement. I believe that it' s impossible to live a life without having
friends at all. An~t'~there are many reasons confirming my point of view.
First it' s been scientifically proven that a human needs to communicate with other
people in order to live, it usually happe~s so that it' s easier to talk, to spend time with friends
and hot strangers. Friends know your likes and dislikes and you know theirs. So there wer~
always something interesting to do.
Second of all, friends are always there when everyone else will have turned away from
you. They will help in need, support you, side with you when you' re wrong.
The next argument is that friends are thз very people with whom you can share not only
your gi4~f but your joy, your happy thoughts, reveal their secrets, so you always have smth to
think about.
Friends are just there ready to find a friend. For some it may take a very short time, for
others nearly their life. But I should say that everyone has got a friend waiting out for them in the
world. Goethe once said: "The world is so empty is one thinks only of mountains, rivers and
cities; but to know someone who thinks and feels w~th us in spirit, this makes the Earth for us an
inhabited garden"

Music is the Universal Language of Mankind.
The dictionaiy defines music as "The arrangement of sounds made by the
instzumenls or voices in a way that is pleasant or exciting". But iii Diet music is the art
that reflects life. Moreover, it makes them feel a Part of global family.
I must say that the society has become much more tolerant to hard rock, heavy
metal and rap music. It's probably explaiued by the fact that...
Nowadays it's almost impossible to escape front music, even if we want to. But,
although we all can now real idea of the etThct music has on the human system.
Certain types of music will have a Particular effect on us, regardless of whether we
"like" them on not For instance, some nmsic will help us feel relaxed and peaceful,
whereas other types may be stimulating to the brain, encouraging curiosity and
alertness.
As a result, music is being used in hospitals, and doctors have found that twenty
minutes of soothing music is oflen lhr more effective that tranquilizers or sleeping
pills.
Generally speaking the reaction on music is very subjective. In Diet any music
can be comprehended and interpreted in different wars. To my mind this is the most
appealing feature of music. It's highly democratic :tnd free from any sort of
dictatorship. `That makes it the most universal common language of mankind
nowadays and ever.

Going to school does not involve having fun. What

do you think about it?
To begin with I'd like to say that school have changed a lot in recent years.
Standards have improved and there is much wider choice of schools, colleges,
vocational schools and universities to suit all tastes, income and inclinations.
However in some schools the children are admitted on competitive basis; which I
personally think to be very unfair and subjective. Besides, many kids tall victim of
their parents have chosen for him, ignoring their child's interests and talents.
I believe school is not only walls, but walls are also important. If the building is
cozy and comfortable, if it is freshly painted and repaired, if it is well equipped.
The pupils feel that the state pays attention to their studies. That they will be
needed as educated people. It's no secret that most of Russian schools experience
financial problems' and their well being and prosperity entirely depend on sponsors
and influential parents. I sincerely hope that in future our schools will have
hygienic swimming pools, well-equipped labs, spacious gyms computerized
classes. Another thing that our school system definitely lacks is the new generation
~ t~I~er~ that are ready to teach in a new way. Statistics shows that only I 5% of
schoolteachers can operate a computer, as computers offer an endless number of
opportunities for exciting projects researches, investigations. School must stir me
curiosity and reactivity of a child, but not grow up an obedient robot. Besides
children must not only be introduced to science, statistics and computers but taught
that communicating what they now and using if practically, are as important as
knowledge itself A report must be a joyful discovery but not a boring obligation.
There is hardly a schoolboy in RUSSIA who thinks that school is fun and
excitement and is honestly upset when the teacher is absent
As for our school, it offers us many out-of-class activities, including several clubs,
excursions and school theatre. And we can enjoy them. Our school theatre is also
loved by everybody. We also go on excursions to many interesting places with our
teacher of history; I've got many friends at school. Some of them are my
classmates. I am happy because my classmates are ~ery friendly. We help each
other with difficult subjects and borrow books from each other. I feel that I can
rely upon my friends in difficult circumstances.

In conclusion Pd like to say that the present day students are literate, inventive,
well read and intelligent, And I feel enormous gratitude to those enthusiastic
workaholics called Teachers.
