You've seen the popular Starbella Knitted Scarf, but how about a Starbella Ruffle Skirt? Milly from our Bonney Lake store created the original pattern - you can find it here. This version has been updated by Katherine Berger who works at our Monroe, Washington store.
Starbella Ruffle Skirt - made by Jeanie Newland
Before beginning this project it is helpful to be familiar with joining and knitting in the round on circular needles. Note that this pattern is for child sizes only.
Sizes: 3-4, (4-6, 8-10)
Yarn: 1 Skein (1, 1) Starbella (A) in your choice of color and 1 (1, 1) skein of Cascade Fixation in color to match.
Needles: US size 8, 24 inch circular.
¾ inch elastic to fit waist.
Stitch marker
Note: The yarn used to add the stretch to this skirt needs to have an elastic blend. We chose to use Cascade Yarns Fixation. Below is the yarn information directly from Cascade's website.
Directions:
With size 8 knitting needles, pick up 114 (122, 130) loops of Starbella yarn (A). Drop Starbella (A) but do not cut (ignore it, we’ll come back to it later).
Start knitting into each Starbella loop with Cascade Fixation (B).
When all Starbella loops are knitted with Cascade Fixation, join into round, place stitch marker. Marker denotes beginning of round. (To combine these two steps see Katherine’s optional cast on directions at the end of these directions).
With Cascade Fixation (B) knit 6 (7, 8) more rounds. After completing these 6 (7, 8) rounds drop Cascade Fixation (B) but do not cut.
Pick up Starbella (A) from below and knit one round of Starbella (A). Note that the Starbella ruffles will be on the inside of your work. Drop A but do not cut and pick up B. Repeat these 2 rounds 3 (4, 5) times or to desired length of skirt.
When finished with last round of Starbella (A), cut A only. Now turn the skirt inside out so that the Starbella ruffles are on the outside of skirt. Continue knitting in the round with B until there are 2 (3, 4) inches of knitting from the last Starbella round.
Purl one round, this will be the fold line for the elastic casing. Knit for an additional inch and bind off. Fold on fold line (purl stitch round) and sew 1 inch casing to inside of skirt leaving an opening to thread the elastic. Sew ends of elastic together and sew opening closed. Weave in any loose end.
Katherine’s optional cast on:
Holding both yarns at the same time, pick up a loop of Starbella (A). Knit Starbella loop with Cascade Fixation (B). Repeat until you have the desired number of stitches on your needle. Join into round and place marker. You are now ready to begin knitting 6 (7, 8) rounds of Cascade Fixation (B).
