Dispatches From Fallujah

Every infantry unit has ghosts. They are conduits to the heartbreak of war, reminders of the brutal individual sacrifice often required so that others might live. The infantry is a guild. So what happens when there are no knights to emulate? Tears of anger dry, days pass, and the ghosts—and war itself—become mythical.

Before arriving in Fallujah this February, the 1st Marine Reconnaissance Battalion had produced no ghosts since the storied days of Vietnam, when recon Marines operating in small teams had clashed with entire North Vietnamese battalions. In 1974, the fallen were not mythical creatures but fathers and husbands and sons and friends. Alongside emulation came bugles and flags and sobs. Thirty years later, their achievements stood tall. But their collective sacrifice had dimmed.

On April 7, 2004, the ghosts returned. One gave his hands. One gave his legs. One gave his arm. And one gave his soul. Those men are no longer in-country, but Marine units are like giant families, and families do not dismiss tragedy. They embrace it. There's a sweet-and-sour mix of pride and despair that accompanies the memory of bravery under fire.

Capt. Brent Morel had missed Iraqi Freedom I. Not that the men in his platoon really cared. Yes, most of them had seen combat, but they valued decisiveness as much as experience. And Morel had plenty of pluck. If inexperience made him a bit eager on the battlefield, that was just fine with them.

The recon platoon was traveling in the first five Humvees of a convoy, each man watching a sector of landscape. The terrain was perfect ambush territory—the road was elevated and exposed, it was paralleled by a series of chest-high berms, and there was even a canal that could act like a moat if the insurgents picked a fight. Some of the Marines hoped they would. A week earlier, Fallujah had erupted when four American contractors were murdered. The desire for contact was not driven by revenge, however. It was something innate that was swelling even as Fallujah deteriorated, a mix of adrenaline sprinkled with just enough dread to make it confusing. There was going to be a big fight. Might as well start today.

The lead vehicle was hit first. A rocket-propelled grenade sailed over a berm and slammed into the machine gun Corp. Eddie Wright had mounted on his door. "Grenade" is really the wrong term for this weapon; its warhead is the size of a football. When it exploded, all five men in the lead vehicle were wounded. Wright lost both hands. Shawn Talbert, standing behind the machine gun on the roof, was raked with metal below the knees. Something broke Eric Kocher's arm. The other two men took minor injuries—"minor" for Marines meaning bits of tumbling steel burrowing into the skin like hornets. Concussions, blown eardrums, and non-arterial blood flow. Minor.

The enemy—insurgents, mujahideen, Syrians, Fedayeen, who cares?—opened fire with machine guns and rifles from the safety of the berms, 100 to 150 meters away. In Marine infantry school, this is known as a close ambush. And the only way to escape a close ambush is to attack it. The last part always elicits a few chuckles: Who would be crazy enough to charge a machine gun?

Capt. Morel was in the second vehicle. "Stop and dismount," he said, already running toward the enemy position. Those other Marines in the bullet-swept column that could follow him did so, racing toward the berms before their brains caught up with their legs.

Sgt. Michael Mendoza was one of them. He hadn't seen combat in the first war either. Now bullets were sailing all around his head, cracking like whips as they snapped through the sound barrier. When he reached the first berm (alive!) he took cover, pumping some rifle grenades into the enemy position. That's when he noticed the guys were moving again. Hell, he thought, I'd better go too.

Morel had practically hurdled the first berm and was now scrambling across the second. Sgts. Dan Lalota and Willie Copeland wondered if he was ever going to stop. They were providing cover fire, then sprinting to catch up. The incoming fire was thick now. It was a big ambush. Maybe 50 people. All five Marines followed Morel into the canal and started to wade across. It was chest deep and had a sinkhole bottom. None were aware that a second element of the platoon was rolling up the right flank.

Seeing the first three vehicles in the kill zone, Gunnery Sgt. Dan Griego had turned the last two platoon Humvees and rumbled up a road to provide a flanking element. When they crested the hill, the Marines saw dozens of Iraqis scrambling around behind the ambushers. They opened fire, killing a few Iraqis and disabling two vehicles that looked to be shuttling soldiers into the ambush and taking bodies out. The Iraqis shifted their attention and fired on them with a machine gun, but the Marines kept pouring it on.

Across the canal, the band of attacking Marines paused behind the final berm. "Cover me. We're assaulting through," was all Morel said.

"You want to assault through?" asked Lalota.

"Yes."

"Roger that."

Brent Morel crested the hill and shuffled down into the open ground. He was struck by a bullet that penetrated his arm and disappeared under his armpit. The exit wound was found on his lower back. It was likely an armor piercing round.

Lance Cpl. Maurice Scott was the first to reach Morel. He dragged him across the open ground into a small culvert, 18 inches deep. Other Marines piled in to help, terribly exposed to fire, shocked that their leader had fallen. By some miracle, no Marines were shot as they gently stripped their captain's gear free and applied battle dressings. Maybe it was Griego's crew pounding the ambush position. Maybe one brave Marine—and another's hands, and another's legs, and 30 Iraqi lives—was all the war required that day.

A press release would be drafted reading: "Captain Scott Morel was killed while conducting security operations in the Al Anbar Province, Iraq." It would be sent after the personal notification of his wife by the casualty assistance team.

"I thought about Capt. Morel a lot," says Michael Mendoza, who was sent spinning by a rocket-propelled grenade that exploded at his feet as he crested the final berm. "What we could have done differently. Could he still be alive if we said, 'Sir! Stop!'? Maybe others wouldn't be. I don't know."

Army Rangers.

What always surprised me while I was serving in

What always surprised me while I was serving in the military is the strange relationship between the officers and soldiers in the United States Marine Corps.

On one hand, there exists a tremendous amount of respect to the officers. One of the first things that I’ve been taught while in Boot Camp is to ALWAYS, ALWAYS salute an officer when you see one. Furthermore, Marine officers have a different color sticker on their cars, so if a soldier sees a car with the blue sticker, he is supposed to stop and salute no matter who is driving that car. It can easily be an officer’s wife or his teenage kid – still have to stop and salute. Another thing is to address the officer only as “Sir”, not just his rank. Such as “Sir, you have a phone call” and not “Captain Smith, you have a phone call”.

On the other hand, if a soldier mistakenly calls his NCO (corporals and above) “Sir” and if no officers are around, the sergeant will most likely reply: “Sir? Do I look like a “Sir” to you, soldier? I work for a living!” Which would imply that it is the NCOs that do most of the work in the military while officers are getting all the credit.

Yet, the third interesting thing is this: If a soldier becomes an officer later in his career – he gets a special nickname by his subordinates – “Mustang”. Those kinds of officers are respected by soldiers and NCOs like no one else. You can often hear this being said in the soldiers’ barracks: “Don’t you know? He is a Mustang!” This kind of officers can do no wrong, he will always be a part soldier, so other soldiers will always have this special bond to him.

Sometime later, I’ll try to describe this relationship from an officer’s point of view.

Borderless nations – Good idea or a mistake?

Borderless nations – Good idea or a mistake?

Spain’s worst terrorist attack ever on March 11th of this year killed 190 injured more then 1,800 people. To this day 18 people have been arrested. Most of those people came from North Africa, particularly from Morocco.

So how did those people from Morocco get to Spain? I did a little bit of research and found out that Morocco in fact does NOT have a Spanish embassy. According to http://www.goabroad.com there are 8 foreign embassies in Morocco: Angola, Argentina, China, France, Greece, Netherlands, United States and Vanuatu.

So it seems the only way for a Moroccan to get to Spain would be to get a Schengen visa in one of the three European Union countries’ embassies in Morocco – France, Greece, and the Netherlands. And since that Schengen visa is good for all the countries in the EU and some others, any Moroccan would be able to freely travel to Spain with that kind of visa.

Now, let’s say Spanish intelligence received a tip that a large group of Moroccan terrorists are planning on traveling to Spain and setting up various explosions throughout the country. So Spanish government decides to restrict granting visas to most of the male Moroccan citizens for a few months or even a year. How would Spanish government be able to enforce that? And can they do it that if they wanted to?

There seemed to be only two ways out of this situation, both of which are not very practical:

1. Either Spanish government demands that the 3 EU countries with embassies in Morocco stop giving Schengen visas to Moroccans, or
2. Spanish government establishes its’ own border with its’ own check-points and does not let in Moroccan citizens with Schengen visa into the country.

If Spanish government chooses option # 1 – what are the guarantees that those 3 EU counties with embassies in Morocco will comply? Further more, since Moroccans can get Schengen visas outside their own country, that means that Spain has to demand that ALL the EU countries stop giving Schengen visas to Moroccans. Which in turn means that because of the terrorist treat in Spain, Moroccans cannot travel to any of the countries in the European Union! Somehow I don’t think the government of Morocco and Moroccan people will be very happy with that and neither will all the EU countries which will lose a lot of tourist and business revenue. So that kind of scenario is not likely to happen.

For Spanish government to establish its’ own border and its’ own visa regulations would violate the European Union’s agreement. How would the European Union feel if suddenly one of its’ members would have their own special visa rules and would not honor the Schengen visa? Besides for being impractical (just think of how much resources both financial and people-wise Spanish government would need to establish its’ own border), this solution would also cause Spain to separate from the European Union.

My final thought is this – Open borders in the EU is a very interesting idea, it allows people and goods to move freely thought-out all the European countries. But at the same time it leaves EU counties more open to terrorist, since in the Open-Borders policy any given county in the EU can NOT control their own borders anymore, and cannot control who they let in and who they choose to leave out.

It would be very interesting to hear other peoples’ opinions on this issue, so I’ll probably put this topic in the forum, after I clean it a bit and translate it into Russian.

A quick thought....

“Asian” is not a description of someone’s race, it’s a description of their driving ability. :)

At least here in the States, have never really driven myself anywhere in Asia to be able to compare.

I don’t know what I’ve been told,
I don’t know what I’ve been told,
Eskimo’s pussy is pretty cold,
Eskimo’s pussy is pretty cold.

Running through the jungle
With my M-16
I’m a mean mother fucker,
I’m a US Marine.

I used to have a teenage queen,
Now I’ve got my M-16
But it won’t be long,
Till I get back home.

I used to drive a Cadillac,
Now I’m humping ALICE pack,
But it won’t be long,
Till I get back home

I used to wear my baggy jeans,
Now I’ve got my camy greens
But it won’t be long,
Till I get back home.

Mamma and Papa were lying in bed,
Mamma turned over and that’s what she said:
Hurrah, give me some....PT,
good for you, good for me

The strength of the American Military.......

The strength of the American Military lies in its’ Non-Commission Officers – NCOs. NCOs are basically the micro-managers of the American Military, Corporals and above (the rank right before Sergeant). In the business world, NCOs would be the entry and middle level managers of the company.

Just why are the NCOs so important? Because they are the immediate supervisors of a typical, entry rank soldier. NCOs serve as “glue” between the soldiers and their officers. In a typical American military unit, for example a platoon, for every 3-5 soldiers there would be One NCO. That NCO would then be directly responsible for his fire team, that kind of breakdown allows constant and direct supervision for each and every soldier, and it is the NCO that reports directly to his senior NCO or directly to the officer of the unit.

Now, let’s take a quick look comparing two military organizations – Russian and American.

Here we’ll be strictly looking at the “human” factor of the military, excluding ALL technological factors. Let’s assume that military technology-wise Russia and USA are the same, so that the only thing left to look at are the actual people that make up that military.

Let’s further assume that a basic American soldier and a Russian soldier are equal in their abilities. Let’s discount the fact that in order to join American military a soldier must pass certain physical and mental requirements (pull-ups, sit-ups, and a certain run time, there is also a written test which measures different analytical abilities), since in all fairness those tests are not very difficult for a “normal” young person to pass. And since there is no proof that either side has “extraordinary” physical or intellectual abilities – they are all human after all, we are assuming the Russian and American soldier would perform equally well in battle conditions.

Let’s also assume that a basic American officer and a basic Russian officer (of any rank) are equal in their leadership abilities. That’s also not very difficult to conceive, comparing the best American military academies and the best Russian military academies would likely show that officers that graduate from those academies are roughly equal in their abilities.

What IS different between the two military systems is the expertise level of their NCOs. A typical Russian NCO (sergeant) is just a regular soldier who has a little more experience (a year of service or so) and has shown good leadership abilities, or someone who has come from a special NCO school, in that case the experience level of the NCO and the soldiers under his command would be most likely the same.

A typical American NCO is much different. Let’s take at a United States Marine Corps NCO - He will most likely be on his 2nd contract, which would mean that he has already served at least 4 years. Even though it is possible for a Sergeant to still be on his first contract, it is rarely so. A sergeant who has only served 3 years of his contract is a person who has demonstrated “extraordinary” leadership, physical and intellectual abilities and has been meritoriously promoted.

It is literally impossible to get promoted to a Sergeant by a regular promotion process in 3 years or less in the United States Marine Corps.

To simply put, an American NCO has at least 3 or more years more of military experience than that of a Russian NCO. Now, how do you think it would reflect upon their performance? In order to answer that, just compare a newly recruited Russian soldier to a soldier who about to go on demobilization after serving for the whole 2 years. The difference is day and night.

Having 3 more years of military experience allows the American NCOs to be more efficient leaders and soldiers, which in turn helps the officers make better decisions and makes American soldiers more capable on the battlefield.

And that difference in NCOs is what makes American military superior over the Russian military when considering ONLY the HUMAN factors of the organization.

Here are some answers to the counter arguments I will most likely hear:

1. There are Russian NCOs which have stayed to serve in the military after the initial 2 years. But keep in mind that this is NOT a usual situation and a typical Russian unit would most likely not have an NCO like that, it is very RARE. If you want to argue otherwise – let’s see some statistical proof.

2. You have to compare similar experiences when comparing NCOs. A Russian NCO who has served a year in Chechnya should be compared to an American NCO who has served a year in IRAQ. Actual battle experience is very important; it obviously makes a person a better soldier.

3. If you want to declare that a Russian person is simply better, stronger, smarter, etc – show some proof of that – let’s see some scientific work proving that fact, otherwise don’t say stupid things like that.

4. Fighting on your own country’s soil obviously makes you a better soldier, so when I’m only looking at the situation where soldiers are fighting on the neutral ground.

The downfall of the US Military, or Russian myth.

You know I have never seen so many “specialists” on the US Military as I see here on li.ru. Anyone and everyone seem to know the US Military inside out, they can point all the problems in it right away tell you exactly what will cause the downfall of the US Military force.

The problem is that everyone who “thinks” they know something about the US military have ever served in the American forces or have even done any kind of extensive research or even try to understand why the US Military does what it does. However it does not stop them from having an opinion and thinking that they are right.

As a person whose knowledge about the US Military didn’t come from Russian books and movies, but rather came from actually serving in the US Military, let me try to analyze some of the arguments seen here on li.ru

The most popular idea (look at the post by “Klushkin” for example) is this:

The problem with the US Military, and the reason why the US Military will never win a serious contest is that American Forces are too obsessed about ZERO Casualties in the war (which can never be achieved), and that their soldiers are not ready to sacrifice their lives for the cause, and that Americans are to reliant on their technology and if that was to fail, Americans will be destroyed…and blah, blah, blah, blah…

The people who are saying that not only know nothing about American military, but they also know nothing abut the Military science in general and are judging US Military by the same standards as the Russian military is judged.

Let’s not even talk about how technology makes the soldiers better, how they can kill their enemy from a distance and the enemy wouldn’t even know they are there. That’s obvious, let’s talk about the HUMAN factor.

First of all, US Military is a PROFESSIONAL organization; it’s a BUSINESS like any other. That means that EVERYONE who join any branch of US Military (just for record the US Military branches are: US Army, US Marine Corps, US Navy, US Air Force, US Coast Guard, US National Guard – falls under Army, a bit different from other branches) has done so VOLUNTARY and is making HIS LIVING in the US Military for which he/she gets paid for. The contract is usually for 4 years, after which you can extend your contract for another term.

Second of all, let’s talk about this ZERO casualty policy of the US. First of all, everyone knows that ZERO casualty in a war is impossible to achieve, but minimizing the loss of man power is the BEST possible strategy in any military conflict for a professional Army.

It cost US Government upwards of $50,000 to make ONE professional and capable soldier, after you include the training, food, clothing, salary paid, and other expenses. It costs more then $100,000 to make a capable Middle Management soldier (Sergeants and above, since those are almost all served more then 4 years already). It costs a lot more to make an Officer.

So every time a US soldier or an officer is lost, US government loses a lot of money, and that simply makes no Business sense. So as you can see, it would be CHEAPER for the US government to lose a couple of tanks, a plane or some other piece of expensive technology than to lose 30-40 soldiers including sergeants and officers.

That’s one side of the coin, the other side of the coin is CONFIDENCE in your own command. Every single US Soldier knows that his Command will do EVERYTHING humanly possible to make sure he survives and comes back to his base. Every single soldier knows that he’ll never be simply wasted away, because he is too expensive to waste.

Just how important is that? Who do you think would be willing to fight better and more confidently? A scared 18-19 year old soldier who is unsure of his officers and command, or an older, better trained professional who knows that technology and support of this command will be always there for him?

The point is any PROFESSIONALY run Military organization should strive for minimizing their human casualties as much as possible if they want to succeed in a military conflict in the 21st century.

USA – THE EVIL EMPIRE!

I got the idea for this post from the comments I often hear on li.ru, such as the comment by flat-out.

The idea is this – USA is stripping the world of resources, bullying everyone around, trying to enrich itself, while everyone else suffers and that’s why the world is such a bad place.

Now let’s take a look at the world, shall we? We’d like to think that we live in a world where people truly care about each other, willing sharing their resources with and other things they own with one another. We’d like to think that, but that’s simply not true!

When is the last time Saudi Arabia said to a poor African country – you know what, guys, I know you don’t have the money, but go ahead and take our oil – here, we know you need it? Or Russia said to Chechnya, we’ve been fighting for a while, and even though it’s our territory and it’s important for us to have access to the oil in the region – go ahead and separate, that’s ok, we’ll manage?

The truth is every country is looking only for their own best interest at heart, they care about their own people, and they want to make their life better for their own people, and when it comes down to it, they really don’t care about anyone else. That’s how the world is now.

Imagine the world as a playground with each country being a child in that playground.

Now imagine you’re the toughest, strongest kid on the block, everyone either respects you or fears you. You’ve got the power and most of the goodies, and most of the other kids hate you for it. They would like to have the same kind of power and goodies, but to get it they have to go through you and they are afraid, because they know they are not strong enough. They can’t really get together and beat you up because they don’t really like each other either; the only thing they really care about is their own interests.

They want the same power and goodies, but the problem is they do not want to share it with anyone else.

Now, if you are that toughest kid on the block and you want to keep that power and goodies for yourself and keep the other kids in line you have two choices:

1. Wait until someone gets strong enough and gets enough courage to challenge you and then fight them. OR
2. Every once in a while show off your strength and beat up a kid that you really don’t like to show the other kids you’re still the toughest and the strongest.

If you wait until they challenge you, you’ll most likely be in a very serious fight, since the kid is probably have been getting ready for a while to take you on. And even if you win – it will not come easy, you’ll have a few bruises for sure.

Now, if you don’t wait and just pick on the kid that has been making a lot of noise and beat him up, the fight will be much easier and your losses will be a lot less.

Now of course in a perfect world there is a third choice – where everyone’s equal, there is no strongest, no weakest kids, everyone’s sharing, living in total peace, holding hands singing happy songs – but we haven’t gotten there yet.

So to sum up my points, USA as the toughest and strongest kid on the block is doing exactly what everyone else is doing – Looking out for THEIR OWN best interests and making life better for THEIR OWN people.

The difference between USA and the rest of the world is that USA is doing it better than anyone else, and that’s why USA has all the stuff and that’s why most other countries hate the US.

Wow, I have some readers now

First of all, welcome everyone.

Not really sure whether I can keep your interest in this journal, but I'll try to post here my thoughts and keep a conversation going with interesting people.

Every once in a while I might post something in Russian, but most of my notes will be in English to keep most of the "goblins" (I believe they are called) out of this journal, since most of them don't understand English.

Feel free to post your thoughts and ideas about anything and everything here, this journal will be totally unrestricted.

P.S. Sorry about some of the "rough" language in the earlier posts with a "goblin" - kind of lost my temper, I'll try to keep it in check.

Bush cost me my job, my kids and my houses!!!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak my
mind. I lost my job this past year. When Clinton was
president I was secure and prosperous, but in the last
year, we had to close our operations. We simply could
not compete with foreign labor. This foreign labor
worked for low pay under very bad conditions.

They worked very long shifts, and many even died on
the job.

This competition could hardly be called "fair." I was
forced out of the place where I had worked for 34
years.

Not a single government program was there to help me.

How can Bush call himself "compassionate?" Far worse,
I lost two of my sons in Bush's evil war in Iraq. They
gave their lives for their country, and for what? So
that Bush's oil buddies can get rich. My pain of
losing my sons is indescribable.

While it is trivial next to the loss of my sons, I
regret to say that I also lost my home. I simply have
nothing left. How can Bush call himself a Christian
when he neglects people like me? I am a senior citizen
with various medical problems. I'm not in a position
where I can begin a new career. I was reduced to the
point where I had to live in a hole in a ground, all
because of President Bush.

And when the authorities found me there, did they have
any compassion for my misfortune and ailments? No, I
was arrested. Mr. Bush, I dare you to look me in the
face and tell me you are a compassionate man! I dare
you to look me in the face and tell me you are a
Christian. If I had any money left, I would donate it
to the Democrat Party.

If Al Gore had been elected in 2000 I would still have
a job, a home, and most importantly, my dear sons!

Regards,

Saddam Hussein

Who's to blame for Russia's problems?

Wanted to write a post like that yesterday, but couldn’t quite get to it….

I wanted to talk a bit about various Russian national traits, which a lot of Russians seem to have, in my opinion from my experience. Remember I am Russian myself, so when I talk about Russian I talk about myself too.

First of all, Russian believe people that they are special in some divine way, smarter, better then other “lower” nations. I guess that’s what “National pride” is, and that’s perfectly fine to have. This particular trait does not apply to Russian people only, I’m sure it applies to many other cultures. Yet there are cultures where this particular trait is not present in my opinion, particularly in Asia and Africa. Can only speculate about Africa since I never really been there.

Second trait is connected to the first, Russians believe that because they are special and better, Russia is soon going to wake from it’s long dream (“Sleeping Giant”) and then all of Russia’s enemies are going to suffer greatly and Russia will come to power and become the greatest nation.

Third trait is directly connected to the second. Because Russia’s enemies know that when Russia wakes and they will be sorry, Russia’s enemies do everything in their power to keep Russia down. And there are a lot of enemies – main one being the USA and the Jews.

The forth trait is connected to the second and the third. Russians believe that the reason why Russia is not the greatest power yet is because of it’s enemies. Russian enemies are at fault, they are the ones to blame for all the problems that Russia is currently experiencing. Basically other people are at fault, not Russians themselves.

Let’s see: first of all, because of the Mongols and Teutonic Knights Russia got held back in its’ development by 300 years.

During the Czarist times it was the Masonic Lodge that was holding Russian back from development into a great nation.

Because of Communists, who were mostly Jews, Russian revolution happened which also held Russia back for many years.

Then of course the WW2 held Russia back, and finally now it’s the Americans, Jews and people from the Caucauses ( ) that are holding Russia back form achieving great things.

I’m not familiar enough with other cultures (besides American) to say whether those traits are universal. Do other cultures blame someone else for their problems?

Looking at the great nations of this world – Germany and Japan for example. They had very bad things happen to them in WW2, yet it didn’t stop them from become economically sound nations. Do Japanese hate the American or the Jews (A lot of the scientists for the Manhattan project happened to be Jewish) for dropping atomic bombs on them and devastation their country? What about Germans, do they hate Russians, Americans for basically turning their country into a pile of rubble after WW2?

Granted Germany lost less people in that war, but Germany had less people to begin with and they lost all of industrial cites as well.

Yet, they were able to overcome all those things, and Russia couldn’t, why??

Is that because they stopped blaming someone else for their problems, accepted responsibility, figured out what those problems were and actually did something to fix them?

Hmm…something to think about……

How come?

For those who accuse of hating Russians, and being a traitor, I’ll say this:

For me to hate Russians means to hate myself and I don’t hate myself. I’m Russian and at the same time I’m American and I do not want to give up either side of me, I am both – deal with it.

I would love nothing more then to see Russia become a great country it’s capable of being, Russian people are one of the smartest, greatest people in the world, and I am proud to be a part of that group, no matter what I do, no matter where I live I’ll always have that, I’ll always be Russian at heart. Why can’t both America and Russia be great countries? Does the raise of Russia mean the destruction of America? A lot of people in Russia believe that….that’s sad.

Now for some people being Russian means hating everyone else who is supposedly at fault why Russia is not a great country – Jews, Massons, Americans, Germans, people from the Caucauses….. Why? I love America – so does that automatically disqualifies me from being Russian? Just because I can point out the bad things in Russia, and criticize Russia, does that mean I don’t love it?

I can point things and criticize America, but that wouldn’t make me American-hater, how come it doesn’t work the same way for Russia?

What Russians that live in Russia don’t understand is that I and they have a different perspective on life. Sometimes to get a clear view on how things are in a country, you need to look at it from the outside (living in another country) – things will start to look much different that way.

I have a unique perspective, I’ve lived in both countries (Russia and USA) for many years, but rather then to listen to what I have to say (good or bad), many Russian will simple dismiss everything….you’re are an “assimilated traitor”. But what they don’t understand, you cannot fix something if you don’t know it’s broken. And some of those things that are broken in Russia can only be seen from the outside, by people like me.

You don't have agree, but listening wouldn't hurt.....

Is that what's holding Russia back?

I recently talked to this one idiot, who accused me of being a "traitor" to Russia, because I have "assimiliated" into the culture that I live in.

The funny thing is, this so-called "patriot" of Russia also leaves outside of Russian Federation in a foreign country, but according to him hasn't "assimilated" into that culture and therefore hasn't betrayed his country.

How's he a patriot and how am I a traitor?

We both live outside of Russia, both do not pay any Russian taxes, both are not contributing a cent to Russia in any way, either physical or intellectual.

So just because he talks shit about the culture and he lives in and considers himself a "patriot" - he automatically is one.

What has he done for his country lately? Has he fed hungry Russian children, has he helped Russian government in any way? Or may be has given money to the elderly?

What is a "patriot"? To me, that's the person willing to sacrifice his life for his country. So if you leave outside of Russia - you are NOT sacrificing your life for Russia, how can you? Can you leave outside of your motherland and still be concidered a "patriot"?

If you want to help your country, you have do it while living and working in that country......simply attacking anyone who has a negative thing to say about your country (true or not) does NOT make you a "patriot".

What it does make you is an idiot and a lier.

Your country cares about one thing and one thing only - WHAT have you done for your country recently???....nothing else

Thoughts from work

Just finished a project have a few minutes to write a couple of lines...not really sure what I should be writing about.

I've been a reader on li.ru for some time now, but never a writer....some journals are interesting, some are very interesting and some are very stupid. I'm not the kind of person that likes to open his personal life to other people, so I'll never post any kind of personal information or pictures in this journal.

I really don't care if anyone reads or understands my journal, to be perfectly honest I opened up this journal for one reason and one reason only - I really wanted to shut some of the stupid fuckers that have been showing up lately in my favorite journal here, on li.ru - reddragon.

Elvira is obviously talented, she writes amazing texts, her posts are full of life and a pleasure to read. Yet there are a few idiots here on li.ru that have nothing better to do then to player hate and talk shit....Puzyakina for example, Divo_SovsemNeDivnoe, some of the others.

Both of those are obviously not stupid women, they have aspirations, have dreams, but either were never good enough or had enough guts to follow those dreams, so they live their simple lives hating anyone and everyone who has any kind of talents and had the guts to follow their dreams.

They simply can't measure up and that pisses them off. Divo is nothing but a typical bored American house wife, in a couple of years she'll get fat, bear a couple of kids and will forget all about her dreams and will accept her role in life.

Puzyakina is a Moscovite....thinking that just because of that fact she's better than anyone else, just because she lives in the capital. But deep down inside she is jealous of anyone who lives abroad in a civilized country.
