I will try to make a strip down version of xubuntu and name it xubuntu-lite. I hope nobody has done that before me :)

Well, I believe every single IT professional must have used this linux distro.

I believe it is a perfect distro for a laptop user - except the hibernation/suspend feature. I don't say there is not, but it need more perfection. Except that everything is working mostly out of the box. No additional drivers is needed for most of the laptops, for thinkpads no drivers at all needed to install.

Ubuntu Linux comes in 4 flavors - Ubuntu main flavor is ubuntu which comes with Gnome desktop, xubuntu which comes with XFCE, kubuntu with KDE and edubuntu is also based on Gnome but it is mainly designed for educational purposes i.e. to be used in schools, collages etc.

I was using ubuntu for a quite some time now. I like the ease of installation, the drivers which comes with the box, the list of applications you can get. What I also like in ubuntu is that it comes only with 1 CD only unlike other distros like SUSE, Fedora.

What I don't like is by default it installs a lot of shit that I don't even touch. Like Evolution, Games, tomboy etc and etc...

I like Gnome, but I don't like that it is not light, I like XFCE but I don't like xubuntu which comes with the version and design of the default installation and also the default set of apps.

So what do I do? I install ubuntu default, I remove all the gnome related packages, remove evolution - basically I strip down whatever I dont like and dont use. Next thing I remove splash boot, I leve command line to be command line with vga=791 resolution and font changed to 12 if not mistaken. I also remove the console beep sound( modprobe -r snspkr, uncomment /etc/inputrc some line...) install XFCE from their website and on top of this I install my own set of packages I use.
Here's the list of what I use:

1. XFCE
2. mrxvt
3. Thunderbird, Firefox, Opera, Gaim, skype
4. Wine
5. Apache2, PHP5, MySQL
6. Conky
7. xmms, vlc, multimedia codecs (just use easyubuntu)
8. Graveman
9. f-spot
10. tsclient
11. vmware

My brother is using Gentoo Linux and very much likes it. I was kinda effected by him and wondered what is it like using this distro. A distro where you have to compile almost everything for your hardware. At the same time it is very much flexible and you can configure all stuff the way you like. It is also noteable that it is available to almost all platforms.

So I give it a shot, I installed it on my IBM Thinkpad R60, the Gentoo base can be installed within 30-45min, the rest may take all night long... I must say it was hard to install for a first time, I printed out the handbook for that. After my 4th install, and my numerous calls and chats to my brother and visits to gentoo-wiki.com I could install whatever I want including my drivers.

I should say - it was very informative and a very good experience. I learnt a lot about how linux works and all. All aside I believe it is very good for a education purposes or people who can afford time and efforts. I believe it can not go to production/business line. You can point me to a number of businesses running Gentoo but if we look generally no serious business would like to have Gentoo in their server room. Why? First of all installation takes time and efforts, secondly emergency cases can and do happen then it is very hard to get back control. The main purpose of Gentoo is to polish and compile everything according to your hardware in order to get the best performance. But since the hardware costs are very cheap these days, well at least it is cheaper when we think of possible down times and their resolutions.

To remove sendmail do

sudo apt-get remove sendmail

But then you get errors while booting up and thus slows down the boot up in general.

Do these
update-rc.d -f sendmail remove
rm /etc/network/if-down.d/sendmail
rm /etc/network/if-up.d/sendmail

Finally some of the Macromedia applications are working on Linux with the help of Wine. I really missed Dreamweaver that I used on my Windows machine and now I got it working on Ubuntu. Since I own Macromedia Studio 8, I also tried Fireworks 8 and Flash 8. Amazingly they work too :-)
This howto requires that you have a Wine version installed and working (I used 0.9.11 for this howto)

The only downside to getting these Macromedia applications working on linux is that you need to use a Windows machine to install them to. So boot some Windows machine and install your Macromedia Studio or specific applications onto it.

When you've finished installing the applications you need to zip/tar/rar a lot of files. The following (Windows) directories you need to compress, then copy to your linux machine and then decompress:

Congratulations! You should now be able to run Dreamweaver 8, Fireworks 8 or Flash 8 on your Windows machine with Wine!


In case you run into some strange errors related to the registry you could always export the Macromedia registry entries from Windows and import them with Wine. I don't think you'll need it, but just in case, I'll explain how you can do this.

First you need to open regedit.
Then you need to Export the entire HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Macromedia/ directory as a registry file.
Now you can copy the file to your linux machine.
On your linux machine you can open regedit using wine regedit
Finally you can Import your registry file and you're done.

Note: If wine/regedit complains about the encoding (UTF-8, ASCII) you can open the registry with Gedit and then save it with a ASCII encoding for full compatability.

Кроме того, автора настораживает количество и мощность гугловских датацентров в США, из того, что эти датацентры размещены поблизости от электростанций, и их мощность на порядки превышает нужды американских интернетчиков, автор делает вывод, что Google собирается захватить также кабельное телевидение и фиксированную телефонную связь, чтобы гнать интернет траффик, телевизионный контент и голос по оптоволокну и стать медийным мегамонстром, который заставит мелкософт казаться безобидной мелкой конторкой... "t's a grand plan, but can Google pull it off? Yes they can."

В принципе, это работает вот как:

Когда вы сохраняете данные на Gmail диске, софт отправляет эти данные на ваш ящик в виде почты и вашы данные будут прикрепленны в эту почту. Данное сообщение (почта) отправляется со спец. ключ.словами, так что софт на след раз проверяет вашу почту на сообщения с этими спец.словами. Если находить то просто берет прикрепленный файл и показывает это как файл на вашем диске.
