The Reserve Bank's foreign exchange intervention transactions to date have been executed almost exclusively in the spot market. Between 2000 and 2007, turnover in the Australian and global markets grew rapidly, supported by increased cross-border investment and trade flows. Subsequently, the collapse in international trade in late 2008 also saw turnover 汇率 in the spot market fall sharply. While between 2009 and early 2011, foreign exchange turnover in the Australian market recovered in line with global markets, it dipped again in late 2011 amid heightened market uncertainty related to the European sovereign debt crisis. More recently, foreign exchange turnover in Australia has remained relatively stable.

Exchange rates at the Travelex airport branch aren't as good as online. Currency conversion rates differ between companies as each company manipulates the interbank rate to make a profit. This is usually done on volume; the higher the volume, the closer you get to the interbank rate. We come across a lot of competitors that post interbank rates online as a bait to hook new customers, but, once customers are onboard, they change the rate drastically, not usually in the customers’ favour. We have partnered with Shift to offer you a money conversion service.
The MAS also allows participants in Singapore's payments system to access three-month RMB loans for trade-related purposes. In November, the Australian financial sector was granted an RMB 50 billion (around A$10 billion) RQFII quota, which will subsequently be allocated by the Chinese authorities to Australian-domiciled financial institutions. Australia has a relatively large funds management industry by global standards, with around A$2.4 trillion worth of assets under management and around one-fifth of this currently invested overseas. In 2013, Hong Kong's clearing bank processed around 85 per cent of all cross-border RMB remittances between China and the offshore market. The first – and still the most important – offshore RMB centre is Hong Kong, which was announced as an RMB centre by the Chinese authorities in 2003.
At its meeting in December 2022, the RBA increased the cash rate by 25 basis points to 3.1%, in line with market expectations. Concerning forward guidance, the committee reaffirmed that the policy rate was not on a predetermined path, as the magnitude and timing of future rate hikes will continue to be determined by incoming data. The firm RBA rate hike cycle kept the Australian dollar from falling in other FX crosses, outperforming the Japanese yen (AUD/JPY), the euro (EUR/AUD), and the British pound (GBP/AUD). However, monetary tightening in Australia is nearing an end, as the RBA has already reduced the pace of increases and indicated a data-dependent approach going forward. For example, when the Federal Reserve intervenes in its open market to stimulate companies' activities, thus increasing the supply of US dollars and placing downward pressure on the US currency, the value of the AUD/USD pair could increase. So why are you ok with paying exorbitant fees and rates on currency conversions?

Other changes in individual currency weights were mostly within +/– 1½ percentage points. Like many commodity currencies, the Australian dollar can be highly volatile. That’s why it’s popular with traders and why it’s important to consider hedging risks when evaluating AUD/USD forecasts. For China, RMB internationalization has started to deliver meaningful payoffs. In October 2016, the IMF entered the RMB into its basket ofspecial drawing rights currencies, which increases the acceptance of the RMB among official forex reserves.
Unlike the RQFII program, there are no jurisdiction-specific quotas under the QFII program. Indeed, to date there are at least three Australian-domiciled financial institutions with QFII quotas. However, from an investor's perspective, the RQFII program has several potential advantages relative to the QFII program, including greater discretion in portfolio allocation and less restrictive rules regarding the repatriation of funds. However, the official clearing bank channel is not the only means of facilitating cross-border RMB transactions. Indeed, RMB transactions between Australian and Chinese entities were effected prior to the establishment of an official RMB clearing bank in Australia, albeit through somewhat less direct channels. In addition, Australian banks have been able to make use of relationships with participants in other offshore RMB centres – most likely Hong Kong – or become direct participants in these other offshore centres' RMB payments systems.

By maintaining autonomy over the Renminbi , China can directly manage key economic variables, including its currency’s nominal exchange rate. Australia has a floating exchange rate, which means that movements in the Australian dollar exchange rate are determined by the demand for, and supply of, Australian dollars in the foreign exchange market. There are a number of factors that affect demand and supply in this market.
Fixed exchange rates tie the value of one currency to another country’s currency. Lastly, a pegged float ties the currency to another foreign currency, but allows deviations within a specified band. Historically, the Reserve Bank has generally chosen to intervene by transacting in the foreign exchange market in its own name, in order to inform participants of its presence in the market. This ‘announcement effect’ can itself have a significant impact on the exchange rate, as it conveys information to the market about the Reserve Bank's views on the exchange rate from a policy perspective. The intervention transactions are typically executed through the electronic broker market, or through direct deals with banks.
Amid ongoing US-China trade tensions, the US Treasury Department formally designated China a currency manipulator in August 2019. How you trade the AUD/CNY pair is a personal decision depending on your risk tolerance, investing strategy and portfolio composition. You should do your own research to take an informed view of the market. Keep in mind that past performance is no guarantee of future returns. If you are interested in trading the AUD/CNY pair you should keep in mind that currency markets are highly volatile. We recommend that you always do your own research before making any investment decision based on an AUD/CNY forecast.

For travelers, the most popular way to exchange cash in China is at the airport or at your hotel. The exchange rate is abysmal but the convenience is sometimes worth it. For the remainder of your trip, use your debit card or global payment card to pull cash from the ATM . This will give you the best exchange rate without having to wait at the bank.
