The hotel was first established in 1952 as Chiang Kai-shek felt Taipei had no proper hotels for hosting foreign dignitaries. The main building was completed in 1973 on the grounds of the former Taipei Grand Shrine, though it underwent major renovations after a fire in 1995. This is a landmark hotel, a bit garish but the rooms are 台東寒單餅 immaculate, large and the whole place has a royal feel about it. Tonight we swim in its Olympic size pool and eat in one of its four major restaurants. Getting out of the airport in a new car, driving on the right side of the road and without a GPS was a bit of a struggle but no incidents and we get to the Grand Hotel safely.

After dinner take a walk, find a pharmacy to buy throat medicine for one of Lilly’s friends in Sydney. We have our heart beats taken and our tongues examined by the pharmacologist, a very pleasant young doctor. He reckons Lilly eats too much, gets upset too easily and carries her little troubles too long. I am more equable but need to eat less meat and drink less, I think he possibly said, “milk”.
We were not enriched much culturally or scientifically by the tour. He didn’t pay much attention to people who were behind taking photos. At one point four of us were lost on the way back to the bus because it was different from we were dropped off. When we called his cell phone which he told us to call when needed at the beginning of the tour, he reminded us it was an international call. Alan Chou our tour guide was fantastic....informative and took care of all our questions and concerns. Hotel where all 5 star and a couple had hot springs in our room.

Our guide Eric showed us educational videos which were helpful for me to better appreciate the history of the sites we visited. You get to see beautiful coastlines, mountains and Taroko Gorge. Don't hesitate to take tour as it is a great way to see the best of the island for a great price. Our driver, Eason was experience and smooth, making you feel safe on the twisty roads. The tour guide Alan Chou was professional, kind and funny. However, it would be nice if we can spent more time in other interesting places in Kaohsiung. God light temple is nice but half day seems a bit too long.

Longteng Bridge was damaged by earthquake in 1935After we managed to escape from the jam, we drove past Zhongshe Seaflower, Lihpao Discover Land and Huludun Park. The initial plan was to stop by to visit some of these attractions. However, both of us were battling hard with the zzz monster. In the end, I couldn’t take it and fell asleep leaving the poor driver alone to suffer from the side effect of the red-eye flight. Only hiccup today came as we travelled into Taipeh’s Sonshan and got within a stone’s throw of it before realising we had pinpointed the wrong airport and it should have been Taoyuan.
