I am hoping the Paoma trail or the Marian Valley trail or Taipingshan are accessible by public transport and/or uber (I'm happy to accept some walking may be involved). I didn't do too much in Kaohsiung but i remember going to this art pier thing i think called The Pier-2 Art Center and going to Qi Jin, can bike around there, there's a fort on that island too. There's that lookout over the city Shoushan LOVE Lookout and further out is that nature area Chaishan. There's also that famous lake with the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas. There is E-DA Theme Park in kaohsiung though but not sure how good it is.

There are a lot of amazing things to explore in Taiwan, and we look forward to seeing you again in the near future. If you are at Hualien main station you can get an all day taxi for a couple of days – some do Taroko for half a day while others do the area between Taitung city and Hualien city for a full day. Lots of lovely places to stay as well – hotels and "homestay" places (ming su – I think they are pronounced in mandarin).

A week in Taipei seems about right as we were there for 8 nights last week. There is so much to do in and around taipei that we still did not get see everything we planned. One highlight was the Pandas at the Zoo – they were so active when we were there – I have some great Videos. Get yourself Easy cards – makes it so easy getting around on buses and trains. The Taiwan people are the friendliest people we have come across – they will amaze you.
I still recall how our car spent an hour crawling towards Longteng bridge when it was right before our eyes, like just a few hundred metres away. I could reach there so much quicker by walking but couldn’t abandon our car along the single-lane rural road without further worsening the jam. On the historical side of it, Green Island is home to the remains of a former prison of the Chinese communist regime as well as indigenous houses. For spectacular views, follow a short path that closely resembles the Great Wall, which leads to a lookout point. I thought Taroko gorge was great, and the coastline on the way down from Taipei is pretty impressive too. If you are comfortable renting a car you can drive right up Taroko gorge to HeHuanShan which is also pretty nice. High enough to notice there being less oxygen, and a bit of snow around.
I won't spend any time in Taipei but i have to catch a flight there. I just came back from a trip to Taiwan for 10 days, covering Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung. The weather was really humid but everything else was excellent.
We also went to the great Raohe Night Market and found a few veg snacks. The livelier place to stay in Kaohsiung; around the HSR terminal, the old train station or the seafront area? I'm looking for somewhere with convenient transport, as have one person with poor mobility, so I can see us just going around the local area on some days.
