nsnbc : A two-hour hearing of US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland at the House Foreign Affairs Committee over the Obama administration’s and the US’ role in the developments in Ukraine nailed down Nuland over the United States overt cooperation with and use of neo-Nazis. Nuland tried to dodge questions, explained US plans for Ukraine and told the Committee outright lies about Kiev having “upheld the obligations of the Geneva agreement”. Nuland omitted that Kiev has mobilized Ukraine’s military forces and the presence of large contingents of Ukrainian troops near the Russian border.

Hard times covering-up cooperation with neo-Nazis. It becomes increasingly difficult for the Obama administration and the corporate US press to cover-up the fact that the main driving force behind the coup in Ukraine are neo-Nazis and ultra-nationalists, supported by the US.

While the Obama administration is pushing for Ukrainian elections on May 25, it transpires that about half of the 30.000 troops Kiev deployed to southeastern Ukraine are members of the National Guard, created in March, and “special regional military units” created this month, consisting predominantly of members of the neo-Nazi Pravy Sector and UNA-UNSO, militant members of the ultra-nationalist and overtly anti-Semitic Svoboda party and other radicals dressed in uniform to give the impression of “legality”.

Сегодня Portland Trail Blazers проиграла очередную игру во втором круге Playoffs с командой San Antonio Spurs. В итоге, счет в серии 0  3 в пользу San Antonio Spurs.

Команда из Портланда не смогла оказать никакого сопротивления во втором круге.

Впрочем, я этого и ожидал.

Теперьвсе надежды на следующий сезон.

Так и затурканные рагули, которые клали плитку и говорили «то е так, пане», внезапно осознали себя укро-ариями, высшей расой, которая должна повелевать другими народами. Толик Шарий (журналист – ред.) даже записал для них видеообращение, где говорит «Попуститесь, ребята, вас до 1939 года не было, вы не украинцы, а помощники польских батраков (даже не батраки) с непонятным мешаным происхождением». Мне как бы на происхождение плевать, но и смотреть на гордо задранные носы внезапных сверхчеловеков как-то смешно и дико. Особенно смешно наблюдать, как у них презрение ко всему восточному (колорады, ватники) сочетается с раболепством и лизоблюдством перед всем западным. Обзывая всех несогласных «рабами Путина», они при этом сами радостно являются рабами условного Обамы (американцев в целом). Как говорит мой одесский друг, «раб не мечтает о свободе, он мечтает о своих рабах». Вернее, наблюдать за ними было смешно, пока они не начали убивать всех, кто не согласен с их мнимым превосходством. Не получается быть хозяевами, то будут хоть надсмотрщиками, вертухаями, полицаями и карателями у хозяев. Всё равно возможность хоть кого-то «нагибать» греет душу любого настоящего садомазохиста. Недавно разговаривал со своим очень хорошим другом, американцем.

Говорили про Украину.

 Представь себе картину;  сказал я ему,  одно из граничащих с США Государств, предположим Мексика, впадает в правительственный хаос. При этом, на территории этой страны имеются ядерные реакторы, и вообще, горы оружия. Как думаешь, как бы США действовали в этом случае?

Он посмотрел на меня, задумался..

 Никак не могу найти параллелей. Таким был его ответ.

В общем, как я и написал в заголовке,  геополитическая фантастика.

Очень сомневаюсь в том, что он  пушной.

Правительство Франции выделило 3 миллиона евро на защиту больших эльзасских (The Great Hamster of Alsace), которые находятся под угрозой вымирания. Причиной гибели этого вида животных стала переориентировка местных фермеров на выращивание кукурузы, которую хомяки не едят.

Об этом пишет в четверг, 8 мая, сайт новостной службы ВВС.

Издание сообщает, что в последние годы численность этой популяции упала до рекордно низкого показателя – сегодня на территории Франции насчитывают не более 160 представителей это вида.

В рамках разработанной правительством программы фермеры начнут выращивать люцерну, а так же другие культуры, которые употребляют в пищу эти животные. В течение пяти лет предполагается увеличить популяцию до полутора тысяч особей.

Напомним, что в 2011 году Европейская комиссия подала на Францию в суд, обвинив правительство страны в том, что те не прилагают необходимых усилий для спасения этих грызунов от полного исчезновения.

Он умер уже в конце 80-тых. Незадолго до смерти у него произошел инсульт. Мой двоюродный брат, которого он очень любил, умер от рака. Ему едва исполнилось 14. Дед эту смерть пережил очень болезненно. Из инсульта он начал выкарабкиваться, но.. тогда началась перестройка и гласность. Заседания Верховного Совета показывали в прямом эфире. Дед не пропускал ни одной новостной передачи и смотрел те самые прямые эфиры.

Все, кто жил в то время в СССР, помнят эти дни. Тогда очень многие смотрели в телевизор не отрываясь.

Дед сидел перед телевизором. Мне рассказывали, что, как раз тогда, выступал Жириновский.

Последними словами деда были:  Он же  фашист!

С Днем Победы всех! Всех тех, для кого этот день еще что-то значит.

What Does Putin Want?

Still, the U.S. narrative – blaming the crisis almost entirely on Putin – has proven powerfully resistant to facts. And that makes Obama’s job of laying out a truthful narrative, which could invite Putin’s cooperation in resolving the crisis, that much harder.

From my reporting on Putin, I have concluded that Official Washington’s analysis of him is seriously off-target. He is not particularly interested in taking over the economic basket case that is Ukraine. Crimea was a different story because of its strong historic ties to Russia, the presence of a Russian naval base at Sevastopol, and the overwhelming secession vote by the Crimean people. But even the expense of administering Crimea, including building a new bridge or tunnel from the Russian mainland, will tax the Kremlin’s treasury.

What Putin wants more than anything, I’m told, is to have Russia accepted as a member of the First World and be afforded the accompanying respect and respectability. That was one reason why he invested so much in the Sochi Winter Olympics. He also appears to have had a fondness for President Obama and was eager to work with him in finding diplomatic answers to crises in Syria and Iran.

But Putin is also a proud man who has been stung by his vilification over the Ukraine crisis which he feels was forced on him, not something he sought. The insults from Secretary of State John Kerry and other U.S. diplomats have been extremely offensive to him – and he feels betrayed by Obama’s unwillingness to rein in the excessive rhetoric of his subordinates.

Putin is on the verge of forsaking his First World aspirations, I’m told, as he has come to view the U.S. government and the EU as sources of endless double standards and double talk, places without honor. So, as part of any summit or cooperation with Obama over Ukraine, Putin first wants to hear an American “statement of intentions,” i.e. a recognition of how valuable U.S.-Russian cooperation has been and can be.

But the prospect of Obama somehow finding the courage to rise to this occasion can’t be considered high. He would have to do something like President John F. Kennedy did in his famous address at American University on June 10, 1963, when – near the height of the Cold War – Kennedy had the courage to assert the common humanity of Americans and Russians.

In perhaps his most important words, Kennedy said, “For in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children’s futures. And we are all mortal.”

Kennedy followed up his AU speech with practical efforts to work with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to rein in dangers from nuclear weapons and to discuss other ways of reducing international tensions, initiatives that Khrushchev welcomed although many of the hopeful prospects were cut short by Kennedy’s assassination on Nov. 22, 1963. The question now regarding Ukraine and the possibility of a new Cold War is whether Obama can pick up Kennedy’s torch of peaceful understanding – and see the world through the eyes of the ethnic Russians in Donetsk as well as the pro-European youth in Kiev – recognizing the legitimate concerns and the understandable fears of both.

Точнее, о трагедии.

Я не знаю что могло произойти, чтобы в сегодняшней ситуации официальный Киев признал случившееся трагедией. Долго наблюдал за метамарфозами осознания случившейся трагедии официальным Киевом. Там было все, от Руки Москвы до  они сами себя сожгли.

На закрытом заседании Верховной Рады Украины во вторник были предъявлены доказательства того, что произошедшее в Одессе 2 мая является терактом, а в Доме профсоюзов применялось отравляющее вещество.

Об этом заявил 6 мая кандидат в президенты Украины, народный депутат Петр Порошенко на пресс-конференции в Кировограде, сообщает новостное агентство Интерфакс.

Позже эту версию поддержал исполняющий обязанности генпрокурора Украины Олег Махницкий, назвавший в интервью Пятому каналу украинского телевидения события 2 мая спланированной акцией, соучастниками которой были сотрудники правоохранительных органов, а также сообщивший, что имеет в своем распоряжении видео- и фотоматериалы,свидетельствующие о том, что сотрудники милиции вообще бездействовали.

Замглавы МВД Украины Сергей Чеботарь заявил в связи с этими разоблачениями, что в ближайшее время будут осуществлены ряд задержаний, в том числе и представителей Правого сектора, а по данному делу проведут объективное и беспристрастное расследование.

Ранее и.о. министра внутренних дел Украины Арсен Аваков возложил ответственность за трагедию на одесскую милицию, назвав действия правоохранительных органов безобразными, и, возможно, преступными. Того же мнения придерживается и. о. премьер-министра страны Арсений Яценюк.

Стыдливо, за закрытыми дверями, но& что-то признано. И даже назван Правый сектор.

Не верю, что расследование будет проведено объективное и беспристрастное. Не верю по одной простой причине;  расследуют те же самые люди, кто и заказал это сатанинское действо.

Но,  что-то признано и, стыдливо, преступление названо преступлением.

Я старательно воздерживался от высказываний по поводу того, что проичходит сейчас на Украине. Делал это сознательно, потому что понимал, сейчас с обеих сторон идет информационная война. С обеих сторон  ложь.

Чтобы ни в коем случае не принимать участие во лжи, я не написал ни слова ни об одной стороне. Лишь изредка я встревал в дискуссию, когда видел что ложь уж очень явна и что некоторые не стесняются распространять ее. Я сознательно молчал, понимая, что происходит что-то страшное и ужасное.

Но не видя полной картины происходящего, понимал, что в этом случае  лучшее что я могу сделать,  это молчать.

Но после случившегося в Одессе понял, что молчать уже не могу.

Впрочем, ничего нового я не скажу. Во всяком случае, я точно не сумею выразить то, что сейчас чувствую лучше, чем это сделал Евгений Гришковец.

Позавчера писал своему хорошему знакомому в Одессе. А он хороший человек. Большой и очень сильный, добрый. Мы знаем друг друга больше десяти лет. Я часто им восхищался и даже не раз писал про него. Я написал ему вчера сообщение о том, что волнуюсь, переживаю. А получил от него короткое послание о том, что он на Греческой, загоняет «ватников». Я не понял, что означает это слово, а он мне написал – это те, кто за Путина  и те, кто хочет в Расею.

Я очень удивился, и это слабо сказано. Я понял, что там творится страшное и написал простую просьбу: «Дружище, пожалуйста, будь осторожнее и прошу: не убей никого. Не бери грех на душу. Ты большой и сильный человек».

Спустя пару часов мы узнали о страшной беде и сгоревших людях. На мои вопросы о том, что там произошло, уже была тишина. Я волновался. На следующий день он мне прислал ссылку на украинские информисточники, где было написано, что все в Доме профсоюзов устроили российские провокаторы, сами себя подожгли, а украинские активисты аки ангелы спасали кого могли.

Я написал товарищу, что сожалею о том, что и его руки теперь в крови. Он мне ответил самым отвратительным образом, что у меня с головой не в порядке. Я ответил, что сейчас с головой не в порядке у всех, и что я не исключение. Но что у всех тех, кто своих соотечественников называет «ватниками» и «колорадскими жуками», у всех без исключения после одесских событий руки в крови и в пепле. На что он мне ответил, что это 95% украинцев. Последнее, что я написал ему: «Тогда оставайся в большинстве. Большинство успокаивает».

После этого я удалил его номер из телефонной книги. Делал я это не в сердцах, делал я это самым странным образом спокойно, с большим сожалением, но понимая, что больше с этим человеком я никогда не смогу разговаривать, как прежде. Теперь я его боюсь и не забуду этого страха. И темного, бездонного гнева и ненависти, которые я увидел в нем, я тоже не забуду.

Да… Отсутствия всякого сомнения, сожаления и раскаяния я тоже в нем забыть не смогу.

Несправедливость! Несправедливость!!! Вот, что сейчас меня буквально душит.

Хотя я прекрасно знаю, что справедливости как таковой вообще не существует.

Справедливости не существует, а несправедливость душит.

Terminally ill people who want to die can take drugs to end their lives peacefully. Ailing pets are put down humanely every day. Clearly, the technology exists to bring about a quick and painless death.

Why, then, do executions by lethal injection sometimes become troubling spectacles? The death in Oklahoma on Tuesday of Clayton D. Lockett, amid struggling and apparent pain, was not the country’s first bungled execution.

A number of factors have conspired to produce painful scenes in the death chamber, experts say: an ill-conceived drug formulation clung to by many states; the lack of medical expertise among people planning and carrying out executions; and, more recently, drug shortages that have pushed prison officials to improvise lethal cocktails and buy drugs from loosely regulated compounding pharmacies.

According to prison officials in Oklahoma, an intravenous line inserted into Mr. Lockett’s groin did not work properly and interfered with the flow of drugs. But doctors say the drugs themselves, three used in a certain sequence, are a deeper part of the problem, because two of them cause suffering if they are administered improperly. And those two drugs are not necessary.

Physicians have long known that large doses of single drugs — certain sedatives or anesthetics — can take a life painlessly, and with far less distress than the three-drug cocktail causes if the injection is botched.

Since 2010, more death-penalty states — Oklahoma not among them — have moved to use single drugs for lethal injection. Even critics of the death penalty say most of those executions have gone more smoothly than ones involving multiple drugs.

Barbiturates, including sodium thiopental and pentobarbital, infused into the bloodstream can quickly make a person go deeply unconscious, stop breathing and die. Dr. Mark J. Heath, an anesthesiologist at Columbia University and an expert on lethal injection, said that high doses of pentobarbital were routinely used to euthanize animals, from pet rabbits to beached whales.

Barbiturates alone have been used in 71 executions, in Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Missouri, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas and Washington, said Jennifer Moreno, a lawyer with the Death Penalty Clinic at Berkeley Law School.

Even though Dr. Heath opposes lethal injection, he said, “I have not seen a single complaint, not an unhappy warden or family or anybody, from the single-drug barbiturate approach.”

But he said that switching to a single drug would not fix all the problems with lethal injection because intravenous lines would still be needed. Starting them can be difficult and requires medical skill.

The three-drug combination used on Mr. Lockett was modeled on a plan first developed in Oklahoma in 1977 by Dr. Jay Chapman, then the state’s chief medical examiner. State lawmakers had asked him if there was a more humane way to execute people than methods like electrocution and the firing squad.

Dr. Chapman proposed a large dose of a barbiturate, sodium thiopental, followed by two other drugs: one to cause paralysis and halt breathing, and the other, potassium chloride, to stop the heart. His recipe was adopted by nearly every death-penalty state.

Но, вернемся к (by lethal injection).

Lethal injection is the practice of killing a person using a lethal dose of drugs administered intravenously. Two methods of lethal injection exist today, one using a three-drug protocol and another using one large dose of a barbiturate.

Each state that employs lethal injection is legally required to have detailed protocols for its practice, and though the set of rules differ from state to state, the process of killing a condemned inmate varies little, and begins with the lethal injection team securing the inmate to a gurney and connecting him to an electrocardiogram (EKG) machine that monitors heart activity. Inserted into the inmates veins are two intravenous lines (one as a backup) that lead out of a separate infusion room, where members of the intravenous team monitor the initial harmless saline drip.

At the wardens signal, the execution chamber is exposed to witnesses in an adjoining room, and in states that use the three-drug protocol the inmate is injected with sodium thiopental or pentobarbital, anesthetics intended to put the inmate to sleep. Presumably after a member of the intravenous team determines the inmate is sufficiently unconscious, he is then injected with pancuronium bromide, which paralyzes the entire muscle system and stops the inmates breathing. In most cases, the inmates consciousness is again checked, and finally potassium chloride stops his heart. In ideal circumstances, death results from anesthetic overdose and respiratory and cardiac arrest while the condemned person is unconscious.

The process of lethal injection using just one drug follows nearly the same procedure, except the inmate dies from the one large dose of anesthetic, either sodium thiopental or pentobarbital.

Problems Associated with Lethal Injection

Two men from Georgia and one from Arizona were executed in 2011 using thiopental the states purchased from a DreamPharma in London. All three inmates reportedly kept their eyes open long after the sodium thiopental was administered, which indicates the drug was ineffective in sedating them. The inmates would then have experienced excruciating pain, but would have been unable to express it, while the two final drugs used in the protocol paralyzed them, stopped their breathing, and induced cardiac arrest. In cases such as these, protocols for assessing the consciousness of the inmates were not followed, calling into question how the rules can be reliably enforced. Without following the protocols, corrections officials unwittingly become torturers, as the drugs they administer cause inmates great pain.

Another issue surrounding lethal injection is the involvement of medical personnel. Though doctors and nurses are presumably the most qualified to administer drugs to an inmate, medical ethics preclude doctors from participating in executions. The American Medical Association issued a statement prohibiting physician involvement in capital punishment, saying it is contrary to the Hippocratic Oath and would erode the publics trust in medical professionals. The American Nurses Association and the American Society of Anesthesiologists have both adopted similar positions. The result is that lethal injections are too often carried out by inexperienced technicians and orderlies, increasing the possibility of mistakes that can cause painful or drawn out executions.

A number of high profile executions have been botched when technicians inadvertently injected drugs into an inmates muscle or the execution team was unable to find a vein due to the inmates past intravenous drug use.

А значит, команда имела предпочтение, потому что это была бы игра на выезде для Portland Trail Blazers. Наша присказка, дома и стены помогают в NBA работает, почти без промаха.

А команда Портланда не допустила игру № 7. Вопреки всем аналитикам комментаторам и разного рода предсказателям от NBA.

Сегодня головной офис NBA в лице Адама Сильвера (Adam Silver) выступил с заявлением по поводу расистских высказываний Дональда Стерлинга.

Как наказан Стерлинг?

В первую очередь, он (banned for life) является нежелательной персоной во всем, что касается NBA. Ему запрещено бывать на тренировках команды, принимать участие в каких-либо мероприятиях, проводящихся NBA, в общем, здесь все понятно.

NBA наложила на него штраф в 2 с половиной миллиона долларов. (Это самая большая сумма денег, на которую может оштрафовать NBA)

Его, (уж не знаю, как они это сделают) заставят продать Los Angeles Clippers.

Вот, все так строго.

Эта история тоже связана с баскетболом, с NBA. Владелец команды Los Angeles Clippers сказал несколько фраз своей подруге, которые были сочтены расистскими. Эта история, запись сказанного Дональдом Стерлингом,  попала к журналистам. И теперь это новость номер 1 в США.

Весь проффесиональный спорт обсуждает случившееся и завтра головной офис NBA должен выступить с заявлением, которое должно определить, какие санкции могут быть применены к миллиардеру Дональду Стерлингу. Кажется, даже Обама уже высказал свое мнение. Баскетболисты проявляют свой протест, кто как может. Вчера перед игрой с Golden State Warriors баскетболисты команды Los Angeles Clippers, которая принадлежит Стерлингу, все вышли на середину площадки, сняли с себя куртки и бросили их на середину, выернув их наизнанку. Знаки протеста и несогласия проявляют и другие команды в NBA, да и не только NBA.

The firestorm enveloping L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling is supposed to be the kind of racism controversy everyone can feel good about. After all, the alleged tape of Sterling’s remarks, reportedly recorded by his girlfriend, V. Stiviano, features the sort of mustache-twirling cartoon villain racism everyone can condemn without feeling implicated. Or does it?

As the New Republic’s Isaac Chotiner points out, “there are bigger racial problems in the country than people privately spouting sinister garbage to their friends.”

Sterling’s past record of facing discrimination lawsuits, including one in a housing discrimination case that ended with a massive, nearly $3 million settlement (although Sterling admitted to no wrongdoing), and another from former Clippers executive Elgin Baylor that was later dismissed, hints at these larger, systemic problems. Long after the Sterling controversy grows cold, vast, racial disparities in wealth, education, employment, health care, social mobility, political representation and incarceration will still exist.

“I’m just saying in your lousy f***** Instagrams, you don’t have to have yourself with, walking with black people,” the man identified as Sterling says in the recording. You can sleep with them. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that, and not to bring them to my games.”

Sterling’s overt racism is of the sort that is rarely publicly expressed – and, in fact, in his case, wasn’t publicly expressed – but even then rarely does the speaker consider his or her own remarks racist. Cliven Bundy, the Nevada rancher and conservative folk hero who speculated last week that black people might have been better off as slaves, insisted “I’m not racist.” As NPR’s Gene Demby writes, “

Haley Bellows was just 11 days cancer-free when she held up a sign during game four of the NBA playoff at the Moda Center Sunday that said, ‘If I can beat cancer, RipCity can beat the Rockets!’

Bellows, her head bald from chemo, was flashed on the arenas Jumbotron screen to swelling cheers as she held her sign during the fourth quarter of the Blazers game. And since then, the images have been shared over and over again on Twitter and Instagram.

Her indomitable spirit apparently struck a chord with fans and people across the country, including Trail Blazer point guard Damian Lillard.

I don’t even know what I meant by If I can beat cancer, RipCity can beat the Rockets, Bellows told KGW Monday. Its more like, I want on the Jumbotron and this is the sign that will do it!

The 22-year-old college student at George Fox University, described herself as a sports lover, a coffee addict and Jesus follower. She was diagnosed with a Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer two years ago, just after getting back from a month-long trip to Romania and Moldova.

Like everyone whos had cancer in my family has died, Bellows said. A lot of them were older and smoked, so they got lung cancer. But my perception of cancer is death.

Since then, Bellows has chronicled her ordeals in a blog:

“I have done all that I can to get rid of this cancer&Ive invited poison to flow through my veins. Ive laid alone in a room while fiery laser beams tried to diminish what is there. My body has been sliced open and stitched shut several times over.”

She also blogged about what the chemo did to her teeth and hair.

You dont really realize the amount of value we place on our hair until we no longer have it. Being bald has left me feeling vulnerable and different. Being bald is a physical reminder of the battle for survival.

At times she’s been exhausted and dispirited but with help from her friends and her faith, Bellows said shes better for it.

“I have been stretched, broken, molded, and reformed, Bellows wrote. I see life through much larger lenses, and I appreciate moments that tend to slip by unnoticed in seasons past.”

The outpouring of support she’s gotten on social media, her cancer remission and an edge-of-your-seat Blazer’s victory also seems to have given Bellows a rewarding moment at the end of a very long, hard road.

The Vatican on Friday defended the fast-track canonization process of two former popes, agreeing that the procedure is unusual but saying that saint-making is “not exactly a democratic process.”

The Catholic Church will elevate two popes this Sunday to sainthood in a historic dual ceremony. Pope John XXIII served from 1958 to 1963; the 27-year papacy of Pope John Paul II ended upon his death in 2005. Some have questioned why the Vatican sped the canonization process for John Paul, allowing the procedure to begin immediately upon his death instead of observing a typical five-year waiting period.

Vatican spokesman Greg Burke said the enormous outpouring of support for John Paul II helped speed up the canonization effort.

“That’s part of the saint-making process. It’s not exactly a democratic process but people do vote with their feet,” he said Friday on TODAY.

Burke said that that while the process for John Paul II may have proceeded faster than others, rush is an opinionated word there, because there are things that have actually happened faster. He also pointed out that Pope Emeritus Benedict, whom he described as one of the most conservative popes in the world, was the person who waived the five-year waiting period for his predecessor.

“I think that’s one sign that we’re pretty safe,” he said.

Both former popes will be declared saints in a ceremony led by the current pontiff. Pope Francis also waived another Vatican rule, in this case the need for proof that Pope John had performed two miracles instead of one.

Rates of suicide in the military were slightly worse during the war years than what the Pentagon previously reported, according to new calculations released by Defense Department officials Friday.

The new arithmetic shows that from 2006 forward — during the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan — the true suicide rate across the U.S. military was actually several tenths of a percent to 1% or more higher than what was being reported.

It took us time and effort to sit down and really just kind of figure out a better way to do the math, says Jacqueline Garrick, director of the Defense Suicide Prevention Office. She said the delay was a need to standardize how suicides are counted across the military.

The problem with the old, now-abandoned calculation, is that it relied partly on an estimated figure in determining a suicide rate rather than precise numbers, says Army Lt. Gen. Michael Linnington, the military deputy to the under secretary of Defense for personnel and readiness.

The old rates were calculated by the Office of the Armed Forces Medical Examiner, according to the Pentagon,

Its jaw-dropping that the Pentagon would use this kind of crass calculation to measure the impact of the suicide epidemic within their ranks, says Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., a senior member of the Veterans Affairs Committee. If that recalculation in any way indicates a need for additional funding or new services, the Pentagon and Congress must respond to address a problem which is clearly worse than we had been led to believe.

Beginning in 2005, suicide within the military — particularly for the Army — steadily began increasing to record levels every year, and may have peaked in 2012.

Among full-time soldiers, the suicide rate soared to 29.7 deaths per 100,000 in 2012, well above a 25.1-per-100,000 rate for civilians of a similar age group during 2010, the latest year available, according to a Pentagon report. Among male soldiers, the rate was 31.8-per-100,000. There were a record 164 soldier-suicides that year.

The overall national civilian suicide rate was 12.1-per-100,000 in 2010 and 19.9-per-100,000 for men in 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The Army National Guard rate for 2012 reached 30.8 deaths per 100,000 with 110 suicides. The suicide rate for men in the Army National Guard was 34.2-per-100,000,Pentagon data shows.

For full-time troops across the U.S. military, the suicide rate peaked at 22.7-per-100,000 in 2012 and fell to 19.1-per-100,000 last year, according to the Pentagon.

Defense officials said that their old rates for suicide were flawed because officials did the math using only a percentage of National Guard and reservists — and not the true number — who were serving on active-duty status.
