Overview

The University, one of only five new medical schools in the UK in 2018, was established to address the regional imbalance of medical education spaces across England and to give access to the medical profession.

The first group of students to enrol in the School of Medicine will arrive in September 2019.

In 1901, Sunderland Technical College was founded, and in 1992, it changed its name to University of Sunderland. It has four campuses: one in London where business, tourism, and nursing degrees are taught; two on the northeast coast of England in Sunderland; and a brand-new campus in Hong Kong.

The University of Sunderland collaborates closely with many leading blue-chip companies and has strong linkages to business and industry.

As a requirement for their degrees, many students conduct internships with these companies, with engineering and media having particularly close relationships.

Assessors acknowledged the university's integration of professional practise and the tangible contribution made to programme content by business and industry partners in their feedback from the Teaching Excellence Framework.

The University of Sunderland places a high value on its relationships with industry, and each faculty has its own cooperative business partners to assist in shaping the programmes' content, collaborate on research projects or degree apprenticeships, deliver guest lectures, or provide internship opportunities to students and graduates.

Rankings & Achievements

University of Sunderland rankings–

  • 77th (Times University Guide 2022)
  • 92nd (Guardian University Guide 2022)

The Complete University Guide ranked Sunderland among the top 100 universities in the UK based on its Accounting & Finance Ranking.

However, it has lowered Sunderland's position in its Business & Management Studies (UK) ranking from 88th rank for 2017 to 119th rank for 2021. This shows that the University of Sunderland has failed to meet crucial standards like likelihood of graduating, degree completion, and high honours.

History

University of Sunderland has been a key educational hub since Benedict Bishop built St. Peter's Church and the monastery there in 674 AD. The biggest scriptorium was in St. Peter's Church, which was north of the Alps.

In this area, the University of Sunderland has constructed the Sir Tom Cowie Campus in St. Peter's.

The university's current roots may be located in Sunderland Technical Institution, which was established in 1901 as a municipal training college. Sandwich courses were initially made available. Chemistry, Mechanical & Civil Engineering, Physics & Electrical Engineering, and Commerce & Languages were the four departments that were initially present. Part-time professors taught courses in Latin and navigation, for example.

Sunderland Technical College- On January 26, 1969, the Technical College, the School of Art, and the Sunderland Teacher Training College were all merged into the newly created organisation that would become Sunderland Polytechnic. (Founded in 1908). One of the earliest of 30 Polytechnics, Sunderland's aim was to impart both demanding academic and career-relevant disciplines. In some countries, polytechnics are often referred to as technological universities. Although their basis were in engineering and applied science, they also built humanities-focused departments with a focus on applied education for the industry.

Student Life

Many of their students stay on as students even after they graduate because of Sunderland's promising job market and friendly community.

There are campuses in the city's heart and other parts of the North East that are accessible to both UK and international students. These campuses serve as a hub for student activities that are shaped by our unique local identity.

Sunderland is a vibrant, lively city that offers the ideal centre for student life in the UK because of its excellent transportation options, easy access to educational resources, and amazing nightlife.

Between semesters and on the weekends, Sunderland is a great city to explore. There are numerous activities there, as well as distinctive cafes, independent stores, a busy high street, and more.

Accommodation

Sunderland University offers housing in one of its five residence halls to every first-year student. There are more than 2,000 available rooms, with a variety of features like shared or private bathrooms and sizes ranging from medium to enormous. The rooms are in apartments with communal kitchenettes.

All halls are self-catered and include fully equipped kitchens and on-site laundry facilities. All residence halls are connected to both campuses via a free campus bus service, and WIFI and personal property insurance are also included with the price.

Transportation

The Sunderland Connect Bus is free to use for university staff and students who may show a valid Campus Card. The bus service passes past Clanny House, and there are bus stops just outside. The service travels between the campuses once every 15 minutes.

The City Campus and the Sir Tom Cowie Campus are connected by a shuttle service.

Thanks to a partnership with Sunderland AFC, university staff and students are allowed to commute to the university via the 700/701 line and park for free at the Stadium of Light. Both the City Campus and the Sir Tom Cowie Campus can be reached in about five minutes.
