Defense of Literature
No matter who you are and where you are from, literature has always been a part of your life without you even noticing it. Literature is one of those subjects which symbolize us throughout the years. It is that represents us in verbal and written forms, that let us communicate, fantasize and understand each other. Without literature there would be no stories, no imagery, and no social life. Literature is through what we are defined when we are looked at by others. It lets us build up ones mind in order for them to understand our doings, it lets one imagine and see of how we led our lives and our style. Literature educates and exercises your mind and imagination just as physical activity exercises your body. And, just as you can apply your athletic ability, we can apply this learning, this educated imagination in a variety of ways. The basis of all media lies in the printed word.
Accordingly to Webster’s dictionary, literature is defined as a body of written works of a language, period, or culture; imaginative or creative writing, especially of recognized artistic value. In other simple words literature is anything that is written and read. There are many different forms and genres of literature, each one unique in its own way, and each one represents its kind and period of time. Society constantly changes over the years and since society and literature are so tightly connected, literature also changes with it. Perpetually rising with new written works, it trains and stretches our imagination, letting us express more and more of ourselves easily. The literature of any social community becomes a record of the nature of that community's understanding at the dated time. Nations can have literatures, as can corporations, philosophical schools or historical periods. It is commonly held that a literature of a nation, for example, is the collection of texts which make it a whole nation. There are hundreds of languages, thousands of styles and millions of authors out there and those three factors are only a tiny bit of what makes up literature.
Literature not only gives us the knowledge and ability to communicate with each other, but it also trains our imagery, which then lets us become more creative in life. It is that helps our imagination create enormous stretches in between the reality and fantasy. Letting us create surreal visions and aspects of life though alternating societies, made-up scenarios of possible futures and imaginary worlds. Fantasy is one of the important assets of this world; we cannot live without it. It comes into role starting in the childhood, when we hear and tell stories, up to the point in life when we try to develop new products or need new ideas for any reason. Imagination is trained through literature; it provides us with ideas and metaphors reflected onto our lives. It is the thing that comes into the complex world of reality when it needs something more then just realism to hold it and understand it. Imagination and literature are closely connected with one another; imaginative literature has a central and essential part to play in the transformation of our minds. It is that lets us put ourselves into someone else’s shoes when we are reading a made up story or even when we are learning history, for example, of aboriginal people or some kind of society. Imagination is what lets our mind make that big stretch away from reality. But without literature there would not be such possibilities. Literature is what trains our imagination. Literature is what lets us have brighter and surreal fantasies. Without it we would be stuck in reality, with nothing but realism surrounding us. When one reads, one reads in the context of their own imaginative world. What the one encounters is not the world of the author; the reader encounters the world of the text. The meaning of the text or the interpretation of the text comes from the level of the imagination, the richer the imagination the wider the understanding of it. One’s imagination can be trained and improved only through literature. Literature trains and exercises your imaginative part of the mind just like physical training shapes up your body.
Literature has been the vital asset of our society. It developed from simple verbal based instructions to complex programs that are developed today to ensure that knowledge is passed in a most efficient way. Literature has been traditionally understood as having a main purpose of entertaining and educating its audience. Literary texts are constructed in effect as objects of beauty, sources of pleasure and as conveyors of messages and information. People treasured literature for its ability to ensure the social wellness of our civilization. For us literature is important because it will give one the opportunity to become a part of the community and satisfy ones’ thirst for knowledge. In order to appreciating a literature, one has to read as widely as possible both perceived literary and perceived non-literary writing. Literature offers knowledge to those who seek it, gives experience to those who understand it, and pleasure to those who love it.
Literature is what we cannot live without, it lets us learn, research, communicate and express ourselves. It is not just about texts and writing and it cannot be considered as a form of expressing yourself through paper and pen methods. Literature is equated with a collection of stories, poems and plays that revolve around a particular topic. Literature is even more then that it is an art form that may be approached on several levels. It, much like a modern advertisement, is often an attempt at persuasion which operates on subliminal levels and artfully instills its message by concealing it under a cover of fictional situations and devices affecting the audience on emotional, intuitive, experiential, and instinctive levels. It is one of the sources for exploring and interpreting the experiences of human beings which are made up of their achievements, frustrations, foibles, values and conflicts -- in order to learn vicariously for ourselves what to do and what not to do in our lives.
