Nereus.

Introduction to Michele Carcano's Life and Legacy
Michele Carcano, born in 1427 in Lomazzo, Italy, was a Franciscan preacher whose influence extended beyond religious circles into the economic and social structures of 15th-century Italy. Known for his vigorous opposition to usury and his contributions to the founding of the Montes Pietatis banking system, Carcano left a complex legacy. His actions and ideas, although rooted in a desire to protect the poor from exploitation, also contributed to the rise of anti-Semitic sentiments that led to violence and persecution. This article explores the life of Michele Carcano, his theological contributions, his role in the development of charitable financial institutions, and the controversial aspects of his work.
The Montes Pietatis Banking System: A Revolutionary Concept
One of Michele Carcano's most enduring contributions was his involvement in the creation of the Montes Pietatis, or "mountains of piety." These charitable institutions were designed to combat the harmful practices of usury, especially prevalent among Jewish moneylenders in the late Middle Ages. Christians, particularly those in rural communities, were forbidden by their faith to engage in usury, the practice of charging excessive interest on loans. However, the need for credit among the poor was undeniable.
The Montes Pietatis were innovative because they provided loans at low or zero interest rates, using personal belongings as collateral. This allowed individuals to borrow money without the fear of being exploited by the high-interest rates imposed by unscrupulous lenders, often referred to as Cahorsins or Lombards. Carcano, alongside his contemporary Bernardine of Feltre, championed this initiative as a way of ensuring that the poor were not trapped in cycles of debt.
The Montes Pietatis operated with a distinct Christian ethos, viewing lending not as a means of profit but as an act of charity. These institutions would ultimately form the foundation for modern banking systems, though they were initially driven by the desire to protect the poor from financial ruin.
Carcano's Role in Fighting Usury and Promoting Charity
Carcano's preaching against usury was deeply intertwined with his religious convictions. As a Franciscan, he believed in the virtues of poverty, humility, and charity. He saw usury, particularly that practiced by Jewish moneylenders, as a grave sin that exploited the poor and violated Christian teachings. In 1461, during a series of sermons in Perugia, Carcano denounced the practice of charging interest, calling for a societal shift toward more ethical financial practices.
However, Carcano's rhetoric also had darker undertones. His sermons often linked usury with the Jewish community, fostering a climate of suspicion and hostility. By 1475, this animosity had reached a boiling point, particularly after the infamous blood libel case of Simon of Trent. Carcano's sermons and those of other preachers stoked the flames of anti-Semitism, leading to the brutal torture and execution of several Jews accused of the murder of a Christian child. This tragic event exemplified the dangerous consequences of Carcano's anti-Semitic discourse.
The Dark Side of Carcano's Preaching: Anti-Semitism and Persecution
While Carcano's fight against usury was motivated by a desire to protect the poor, his views on Jews were deeply problematic. He often blamed Jews for the prevalence of usury, despite the fact that Jewish moneylenders were often the only option available for loans in Christian-dominated economies. His inflammatory rhetoric served to justify persecution and led to incidents of violence against Jewish communities, most notably the blood libel case of Simon of Trent.
The blood libel accusation involved the mysterious disappearance of a child in Trent, Italy, in 1475. The child's body was later discovered, and several Jews were accused of ritually murdering the child. Although there was no evidence to support the claims, the case resulted in the torture and execution of several Jews. Carcano s anti-Semitic sermons likely contributed to the climate of suspicion that allowed such accusations to spread.
This aspect of Carcano's life and work reflects a troubling aspect of religious history in medieval Europe, where theological discourse often became entangled with social and political agendas, leading to the scapegoating and marginalization of minority groups.
Spiritual Contributions and Theological Influence
Beyond his controversial views on usury and the Jewish community, Michele Carcano also made significant contributions to religious thought. His sermons and writings were deeply rooted in Christian theology and provided insights into the role of religion in everyday life. His theological ideas focused on the virtues of poverty, humility, and charity, and he was a strong advocate for religious art as a means of elevating the soul.
Carcano's spiritual writings, which included works like Sermones quadragesimales fratris Michaelis de Mediolano de decem preceptis (1492), emphasized the importance of the Ten Commandments and the need for moral reform in society. These sermons were later printed and circulated, helping to spread his ideas across Europe.
In 1939, Carcano s spiritual writings were officially approved by theologians, and he was granted the title of Servant of God, a step toward potential canonization. His writings and sermons continue to be studied by theologians today, though his legacy is viewed through a critical lens due to his association with anti-Semitism.
Carcano's Lasting Impact and Canonization Process
Michele Carcano's impact on Christian theology and the development of charitable financial systems cannot be overstated. His role in the founding of the Montes Pietatis has left a lasting legacy in the banking world, and his anti-usury campaigns were among the earliest efforts to regulate interest rates and protect the poor from exploitation.
Despite the troubling aspects of his rhetoric, particularly his anti-Semitic views, Carcano s contributions to the development of Christian charity and finance have endured. In 1939, the Catholic Church took the first step toward recognizing his sanctity by granting him the title of Servant of God. This title is the first stage in the long process of canonization, which may one day result in his being declared a saint.
However, Carcano s legacy remains a complex one, as he was also a significant figure in the history of religious anti-Semitism. His involvement in the persecution of Jews in Italy highlights the dangers of religious rhetoric being used to justify violence and discrimination.
Michele Carcano was a man of great influence, whose contributions to both religious thought and economic systems have shaped the course of history. His role in the creation of the Montes Pietatis represents a key moment in the development of charitable finance, and his theological writings continue to resonate with Christian thinkers today. However, his legacy is also marked by the dark stain of anti-Semitism, which serves as a reminder of the potential harm that religious teachings can inflict when they are intertwined with social and political agendas. As the Church continues to explore the possibility of his canonization, it is essential to consider the complexities of Carcano's life and work.

Anna, Princess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin: Life, Regency, and Legacy |

• Early Life and Family Background
• Marriage to William II of Hesse
• Political Challenges and Regency
• Conflicts with the Estates and Saxony
• Role in the Education and Upbringing of Her Children
• Later Life and Second Marriage
• Legacy and Historical Significance
Early Life and Family Background
Anna, Princess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, was born on 14 September 1485 in Plau am See, into the distinguished House of Mecklenburg. She was the daughter of Duke Magnus II of Mecklenburg (1441 1503) and Sophie of Pomerania-Stettin (c. 1460 1504). Being part of the 13th generation of the Princely House of Mecklenburg, Anna grew up in an environment shaped by dynastic politics and strategic alliances. Her noble upbringing prepared her for the complex political life she would later navigate, particularly as a regent and influential figure within Hesse.
Marriage to William II of Hesse
In 1500, Anna married William II of Hesse (1469 1509), becoming his second wife. The union was not only a personal alliance but also a political one, strengthening ties between Mecklenburg and Hesse. At the time of their marriage, the territories of Upper and Lower Hesse faced political instability: the early death of William III of Upper Hesse and the incapacity of the regent of Lower Hesse meant that Hesse was reunified under William II. Unfortunately, William II soon fell ill, reportedly due to syphilis, and became incapable of governing effectively in the years that followed.
Political Challenges and Regency
Due to William II s declining health, Anna became increasingly involved in governance. Initially, her husband s first will (1506) appointed a council of five guardians to oversee the education and protection of their children, Elisabeth (1502 1557) and Philip I (1504 1567). In his second will (1508), William II specifically named Anna as a guardian, alongside two counselors, with the intent that she manage the affairs of Hesse during her son s minority.
Upon William II s death in 1509, Anna faced resistance from the Estates of Hesse and the Dukes of Saxony, who did not recognize her claim to the regency. Despite this, she remained determined to protect her children s inheritance and assert influence over Hesse s governance. Initially, she lived at her Wittum in Gießen with her daughter Elisabeth, while Philip stayed in Kassel under the supervision of Ludwig von Boyneburg to Lengsfeld. Her financial dependence on the Council created significant challenges, limiting her capacity to act freely in political matters.
Conflicts with the Estates and Saxony
One illustrative conflict occurred in 1512, when Anna s sister Catherine married Duke Henry IV of Saxony. Anna intended to present her daughter Elisabeth at the Saxon court as Elisabeth had been promised to marry John, the eldest son of George the Bearded. Anna requested damask fabric for a suitable dress from the council, but her request was denied. Frustrated by the lack of support, Anna chose not to take Elisabeth to Dresden, highlighting the difficulties she faced in asserting her authority and protecting her children s social and political status.
By 1514, the situation shifted in her favor. With the support of many nobles and cities, Anna managed to exercise significant power, even though she was never officially recognized as regent. She effectively ruled Hesse beyond 1519, when her son Philip was formally declared of age by Emperor Maximilian I, demonstrating her enduring influence and political skill.
Role in the Education and Upbringing of Her Children
Anna s dedication to her children s welfare was a defining feature of her regency. She carefully managed Elisabeth s upbringing and was deeply involved in arranging her social and marital prospects. Similarly, Anna s attention to Philip s education ensured that he was prepared for leadership despite the political turbulence of his early years. Her regency reflects the broader role noblewomen played in early modern Europe: managing dynastic succession, protecting family interests, and navigating intricate political alliances.
Later Life and Second Marriage
Little is known about Anna s later years. In 1519, she remarried Count Otto of Solms-Laubach, who was significantly younger at 23 years old. Unfortunately, the marriage was short-lived, as Otto died three years later. Despite these personal challenges, Anna s earlier political achievements and her careful management of her children s futures left a lasting imprint on Hesse and the surrounding regions. She passed away on 12 May 1525 in Rödelheim.
Legacy and Historical Significance
Anna, Princess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, remains a significant figure in the history of Hesse due to her resilience and political acumen. Her regency, though unofficial, showcased her ability to navigate court politics, assert authority in a male-dominated environment, and protect her children s inheritance. Anna s life also highlights the challenges faced by noblewomen in early modern Europe: financial dependence, political resistance, and the struggle for recognition in governance. Her story is a testament to her determination, strategic insight, and enduring influence in shaping Hesse s political landscape.

Wales NHS Waiting Lists Hit Three-Year Low Despite A&E Pressures |

• Waiting Lists Fall for Seventh Consecutive Month
• Long Waits Drop Dramatically from Peak Levels
• England Comparison Reveals Stark Performance Gap
• Betsi Cadwaladr Accounts for Two-Thirds of Two-Year Waits
• Emergency Departments Face Record January Demand
• Ambulance Response Times Under Pressure
• Cancer Care and Diagnostics Show Mixed Results
• Political Reactions Divided Over Progress Claims
• The Patient Reality Behind the Statistics
• Looking Ahead: Can Momentum Be Sustained?
Hospital waiting lists in Wales have fallen to their lowest number in almost three years, latest figures have shown, marking a significant milestone in the Welsh Government's efforts to tackle the backlog of planned care. There were just under 741,000 recorded patient pathways as of December 2025, compared to 734,721 in March 2023, representing sustained progress in reducing the treatment queue that ballooned during the Covid-19 pandemic -1.
The December data also represented both a drop of 17,000 on the previous month and a fall for the seventh month in a row, according to data from Digital Health and Care Wales -1. This consistent downward trend is particularly noteworthy given the winter pressures that typically exacerbate NHS performance, with an early flu season hitting the UK in December 2025 adding to the usual seasonal challenges -4.
First Minister Eluned Morgan has welcomed the figures as evidence that her commitment to cutting waiting lists is delivering results. She said she had made a commitment to cutting waiting lists and the longest waits and "that's exactly what is happening" -1. Morgan added: "Seven months of the waiting list falling. The longest waits down by more than 90% from their peak. Tens of thousands more outpatient appointments delivered. This is real progress that's making a massive difference to people's lives" -1.
Long waits of one or two years or more are at their lowest levels since the height of the pandemic, which the Welsh government said showed "real progress" in addressing the most clinically concerning backlogs -1. As of December 2025, there were 5,252 waits of two years or more in Wales, down more than 1,600 (27%) on the previous month -1. This represents a dramatic reduction from the peak, with the number of patients waiting more than two years now 92.5% lower than the highest levels recorded during the pandemic -4.
The Welsh Government's £120 million plan to tackle waiting times appears to be gaining traction, with the overall waiting list falling for seven consecutive months a pattern not typically seen given the heightened pressures on the NHS during winter months -4. Health boards across Wales have implemented measures to boost productivity and increase core activity, contributing to the sustained improvements -9.
However, the figures also reveal a stark contrast with performance across the border. The data showed 19% of the overall list in Wales was waiting a year or more compared to England, where the figure is less than 2%, according to comparable NHS data -1. This disparity highlights the different trajectories of the two health services since the pandemic, with England's waiting list having followed a different pattern of recovery.
The average wait for hospital treatment in Wales is currently 19 weeks down from about 24 weeks the previous year, but higher than in England, where it stands at 13 weeks -1. This six-week gap represents a significant difference in patient experience between the two nations, with Welsh patients typically waiting considerably longer for their treatment to commence.
It is important to understand that the figure of 741,000 represents patient pathways rather than individual patients. Some people are waiting for more than one treatment or on more than one patient pathway the journey through the NHS system to get care -1. Taking this into account, it is estimated that there were 580,289 actual patients waiting to go into hospital in December, constituting a drop of more than 11,700 on the month before -1.
The distribution of long waits across Wales is notably uneven. Betsi Cadwaladr health board accounted for two-thirds of the two-year waits, with general surgery, oral surgery, and ENT specialisms posting the longest waits -1. This concentration of long waits in North Wales has been a persistent concern, with the health board having spent over three years in special measures -10. The health minister set a target last year that no-one should be left waiting that long by March, adding urgency to efforts in the worst-affected areas -1.
While the planned care figures offer grounds for cautious optimism, the picture in emergency care is considerably more challenging. Emergency units across Wales saw their busiest January in a decade, with 63.4% of patients seen in A&E within the four-hour target time -1. This is a slight improvement on the previous month but still the third lowest in 12 years -1. The Welsh Government confirmed that January 2026 saw the highest number of emergency department attendances for that month on record, placing extraordinary pressure on frontline services -3.
The three main hospitals in north Wales all had their worst performance months on record for meeting the four-hour target -1. Across the country, 11,400 patients waited 12 hours or more to be seen in A&E the most in three years -1. More recent data suggests this figure may have increased further, with 11,392 patients waiting 12 hours or more in January according to other sources -6. The Royal College of Emergency Medicine described the performance as reaching "record lows across the board" with the highest proportion of patients ever waiting for over four, eight and 12 hours to be seen, treated and discharged -3.
Compared to major emergency units in England, Wales performed worse in each of the last 23 months, up to December 2025 -1. This persistent gap mirrors the contrast in waiting list performance and raises questions about the underlying causes of differential outcomes between the two health services.
The NHS Confederation in Wales acknowledged that January had brought "significant demand" on urgent and emergency care, which was evident when some health boards declared critical incidents -1. Dr Rob Perry, RCEM Vice President for Wales, said: "January's data shows the harsh reality of the situation in our EDs, and the impact it is having on patients, despite the best efforts of staff, who continue to go above and beyond not just in January but all year round" -3.
For ambulance calls, the data showed average response times to cardiac emergencies were within the target range of between six and eight minutes, averaging seven minutes and eight seconds -1. However, the response to emergency "red" calls averaged nine minutes 33 seconds, longer than the target introduced last summer of between six and eight minutes -1. The 90th percentile for red calls increased to 22 minutes 48 seconds, representing the longest recorded waits for the most critical patients -6.
The Welsh Government has responded to these pressures with additional investment, announcing in February 2026 a £23.1 million investment in the Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust fleet, including 50 new emergency ambulances and additional vehicles to modernise and improve reliability -10. Health Secretary Jeremy Miles said the investment is essential to ensure emergency help is "on the way" when people dial 999 -10.
In cancer care, 60.7% of patients started treatment within 62 days of the disease being first suspected -1. This is an improvement but still less than the 75% target -1. Diagnostic patient pathways waiting increased to just over 135,300 in November, the highest figure on record, with the number waiting longer than eight weeks decreasing only slightly -8. These diagnostic delays have implications for both cancer detection and the treatment of other conditions requiring investigative tests.
Political reactions to the latest figures have been predictably divided. Plaid Cymru's spokesperson for health and social care, Mabon ap Gwynfor MS, said the waiting times were too long: "There remains 741,000 on treatment waiting lists, and a record high figure of 137,300 diagnostic patient pathways people in pain and waiting for treatment or answers for far too long, right under Labour's watch" -1.
Peter Fox MS, Conservative health spokesman, suggested the picture was worse in certain parts of the country: "It is clear that after 27 years of Plaid-backed Labour governments, our NHS is broken. In some areas, the situation is getting worse. It's clear that Labour and Plaid are failing those in need of emergency care" -1. The Welsh Conservatives have called for a "health emergency" to be declared and proposed measures including increasing hospital beds and establishing an NHS Wales Reserves Service -6.
Reform UK's James Evans MS raised concerns about spending priorities, suggesting: "Ambulance waiting times are getting worse as Plaid and Labour's budget deal sees cash splashed on making ambulances 'greener'" -1.
The Welsh Government has defended its record, pointing to the sustained reduction in waiting lists and the dramatic fall in long waits. A spokesperson said: "The latest figures show the Welsh Government's £120m plan to cut long waiting times and the overall waiting list is working, as more outpatient appointments, tests and operations are provided across Wales" -3.
Darren Hughes, director of the Welsh NHS Confederation, offered a balanced assessment: "It is reassuring to see the continued, relentless focus on driving down waiting lists is paying off, especially for those waiting the longest for treatment. NHS leaders are fully aware that we are still not where we need to be too many people are still waiting a long time for treatment but that we must capitalise on this momentum, learn from what has worked in driving down waiting lists and make sure areas of best practice are shared and scaled" -4.
Professor Jon Barry, Director in Wales at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, has previously emphasised the need for long-term solutions, arguing that the Welsh Government must pivot its focus away from short-term targets that aren't being achieved and towards a long-term approach, with the expansion of surgical hubs at its core -5. Surgical hubs protect planned care from disruption by separating it from emergency admissions, reducing short-notice cancellations and helping cut waiting times -5.
For patients and families across Wales, the statistics represent real experiences of waiting, uncertainty, and sometimes deteriorating health while queuing for treatment. The reduction in long waits will bring relief to thousands who had been waiting excessive periods, but the continued pressure on emergency departments affects those needing urgent care, with long waits in A&E associated with increased patient stress and delayed treatment -3.
The Welsh Government's ability to sustain the recent progress while addressing emergency care pressures will determine whether the current momentum can be maintained. With a target to eliminate two-year waits by March 2026 and reduce the overall waiting list by 200,000, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether Wales can continue to narrow the gap with England's performance while managing the ever-present demand for urgent and emergency care -2-9.

"Better to be dead than "cool" |
The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel and Rucriminal.info continue to talk about the fate of the leaders of the defrauded miners-shareholders of Lebedinsky GOK, who are trying to get their money from Metalloinvest and Alisher Usmanov. The first of them, Andrei Burkin, was sent to prison for 9.5 years. At the same time, they eliminated a dangerous witness — Andrei Burkin’s wife Victoria was sent to a colony for 7 and a half years. The Burkins have been in inhumane conditions of a strict regime for a year and a half! And this is on a completely fabricated case of extortion. Today we will tell you about another leader of the miners who suffered from Alisher Usmanov, Andrei Ivanov.
Let us recall that the miners lost their shares in the mining and processing plant during a forced buyout, which was carried out by Usmanov and Skoch structures at prices far from market prices. The assessment was carried out by the company & quot;Gorislavtsev and Co. Assessment& quot;, which proceeded from the fact that the official revenue of the mining and processing plant was less than 1 billion dollars. However, as the miners claim, in reality the revenue was understated by at least three times. For the purposes of tax optimization, the products were sold at reduced prices to Usmanov and Skoch offshore companies (BGMT and FMC ltd.), and they then sold them at market prices. As a result, the real revenue of the mining and processing plant was at least 3 billion dollars. Andrey Ivanov signed a settlement agreement with Metalloinvest. How the negotiations went, who the intermediaries were, we will tell you another time. Ivanov was persuaded to do this by the entire management, as well as representatives of Metalloinvest — Ilya Rybalkin, Grigory Levchenko, Alex Tumanyan. Usmanov’s personal PR man Grigory Levchenko was especially diligent (he was the personal PR man of the former head of Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin, he has a residence permit in Germany). According to the Agreement of April 12, 2023, Ivanov pledged not to mention the company, its representatives and, most importantly, shareholder Alisher Usmanov.
For their part, Usmanov’s specialists (Levchenko, Tumanyan and Rybalkin) verbally guaranteed Ivanov that the minority miners, whom he represented by proxy, would also receive decent compensation for past deception. We will treat them with proportionate respect,& quot; Usmanov’s representatives said. However, Ivanov later learned that Metalloinvest lawyers had begun to “give” old people 2-3 million rubles as “social and humanitarian aid,” while taking receipts stating that they had no claims against the company. Later, the signatures of 3 LGOK minority shareholders appeared on an “Open Letter” addressed to the company and to its shareholder Usmanov.
In other words: they again decided not to pay even 50% of the market value of the shares they had taken away. The miners credited Ivanov for this dirty trick. And then he began to consult them over the phone on how to act correctly in order to receive decent compensation. It later turned out that the miners’ phones were tapped.
“My fault, mistake, oversight is that I trusted Usmanov’s people on their word of honor,” Ivanov notes.
Now, the experts on & quot;Open Letters& quot; in defense of the oligarch’s honor are threatening the same thing they promised Andrei Ivanov in 2009 through the Director of Corporate Affairs Sergey Yakovlevich Shuvalov: & quot;We won’t kill! We’ll take everything and charge you with a criminal offense!& quot; The oligarchs are trying to keep their word despite international sanctions: Andrei Burkin and his wife, who have nothing to do with the long-standing dispute, were charged with a criminal offense under a crudely fabricated case of & quot;extortion.& quot;
The new CEO of the company is threatening Andrei Ivanov with the same thing. The threats are contained in his letter marked & quot;confidential.& quot;
Grigory Levchenko is especially trying. He sends Ivanov messages with a video for the Nirvana song & quot;Stay Away,& quot; which begins with the words & quot;Better to be dead than & quot;cool.& quot; And also the message that God & quot;does not know& quot; Ivanov.

VChK-OGPU emphasizes an important detail: now Usmanov’s lawyers are offering small money (16 thousand rubles per share) to elderly, disadvantaged people from among the deceived, essentially robbed minority shareholders in exchange for recognizing the sentence of the Burkin family as fair.
Metallinvest is destroying people by families and trying to cover up the fabricated trial with general condemnation and withdrawal of confidence in the leader of the group Burkin.

• Early Life and Background
• Political and Military Involvement
• The Land Grant and Settlement in New Brunswick
• Contributions to the Local Community
• The Legacy of Jacob Ellegood
Jacob Ellegood (1742-1801), born in Virginia, was an influential figure in New Brunswick, with his contributions spanning across farming, politics, and military service. His life tells the story of a man dedicated to the British Crown during the turbulent years of the American Revolutionary War and the early formation of Canada. From his early experiences in Virginia to his eventual settlement in New Brunswick, Ellegood s impact is still recognized today, notably in his military service, political representation, and land development efforts.
Early Life and Background
Jacob Ellegood was born in Virginia in 1742 to a farming family. His upbringing in the American colonies exposed him to the complex social and political dynamics of the time, as tensions between the colonies and the British government were beginning to boil over. Although little is known about his early years, it is clear that Ellegood was a man of ambition and determination, traits that would serve him well in his later endeavors. He eventually owned two plantations in Virginia, further cementing his position in the local economy.
Political and Military Involvement
During the American Revolution, Jacob Ellegood made the choice to align himself with the British Crown. In 1776, as the Revolutionary War intensified, he raised a loyalist regiment to support the British cause. His loyalty to the Crown led to his capture, and Ellegood was taken prisoner during the war. However, his service did not go unnoticed. At the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, he was awarded a land grant in New Brunswick, a region that was growing in importance as many Loyalists sought refuge in the British colonies after the war.
Ellegood's military experience did not end with the Revolutionary War. He was appointed a colonel in the local militia in New Brunswick, a testament to his leadership skills and experience. In addition to his military service, he became a justice of the peace, a role in which he had significant influence in the community. His dedication to maintaining law and order helped ensure the growth and stability of the area during a time of rapid change.
The Land Grant and Settlement in New Brunswick
Following the Revolutionary War, Jacob Ellegood took advantage of the land grant he received and moved to New Brunswick with his family. This was a turning point in his life. The Saint John River, located in what is now New Brunswick, became the site of his new home. The land grant allowed Ellegood to establish a farm, furthering his ties to the region and contributing to the development of the fledgling colony.
In addition to his agricultural pursuits, Ellegood was an astute landowner. He purchased the property previously owned by the infamous Benedict Arnold when Arnold departed from the colony. This move demonstrated Ellegood's ability to seize opportunities and further his financial interests. The land he acquired became a key asset, and it played an important role in the growing economy of New Brunswick.
Contributions to the Local Community
Jacob Ellegood was not just a farmer and military officer; he was also an important figure in the local community. He was appointed as a magistrate, a position that allowed him to oversee legal matters and ensure justice was served. Ellegood was involved in the construction of roads in the area, which was critical for the growth of New Brunswick's infrastructure. His leadership in these early efforts helped lay the foundation for the modern infrastructure seen in the region today.
Ellegood's connection to the community was further strengthened by his marriage to Mary Saunders, the sister of John Saunders, who would become the Chief Justice of New Brunswick. This familial relationship further cemented Ellegood's position within the political and legal landscape of the region.
The Legacy of Jacob Ellegood
Jacob Ellegood's legacy continues to have an impact on New Brunswick. Though he passed away in 1801 on his property, his influence can still be seen in the region's development during the late 18th century. His service to the British Crown, his role in the military, and his contributions to the local infrastructure all played a part in the shaping of New Brunswick during its early years.
Ellegood s name is also connected to the Elligood (1794 ship), which may have been named in his honor. This connection further highlights the enduring legacy of this influential figure in the history of New Brunswick.
Jacob Ellegood's life was one of service, loyalty, and dedication. From his early years in Virginia to his final days in New Brunswick, Ellegood made significant contributions to the communities he was part of. His political involvement, military service, and role as a landowner and magistrate helped shape the future of New Brunswick. As a figure in the early history of the province, his legacy continues to be remembered, and his story serves as a testament to the impact of individuals on the growth and development of a new nation.

The people have turned their backs on the "People’s Singer." |
On December 5, Larisa Dolina made a bold announcement on Channel One that she was prepared to pay Polina Lurye the 112 million rubles she paid for the singer’s five-room apartment. However, since the broadcast and to this day, no one has contacted Lurye or her representatives. Previously, Dolina’s lawyer offered the businesswoman a settlement on completely unfavorable terms: payment in installments over 3-4 years, without penalties or interest, and without any guarantees. Lurye refused. It’s clear that Dolina is simply awaiting the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation’s decision (the hearing will take place on December 16) and hopes that the Supreme Court will uphold the decisions of the other two courts, allowing Dolina to retain ownership of the apartment and not obligate her to repay the money. The statement regarding Channel One is merely an attempt to sway public opinion in her favor before the case is heard in the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova also rushed to her support, going so far as to say that the story of Dolina’s apartment is being exaggerated by... & quot;enemies of our country who want to destabilize the situation within Russia.& quot;

Before the Supreme Court hearing, the Cheka-OGPU and Rucriminal.info asked a lawyer with extensive experience in apartment disputes to comment on the case:
& quot;At the time of the transaction, Dolina was a competent, publicly known, adult woman, acting consciously. She understood that she was selling the apartment, understood the price, understood that she was receiving money, and that ownership was transferred to the buyer. The transaction was concluded at market value, without any significant reduction in value, without threats, and without pressure from the buyer. There was no trace of enslavement whatsoever.& quot;
The fraud that Dolina subsequently fell victim to was not directly related to the transaction itself. She was deceived by third parties, not the buyer or their representatives. The bona fide purchaser had no role in misleading the seller, in inducing the sale, or in the subsequent disposal of the proceeds. He fulfilled all the terms of the contract: he paid, executed the transaction, and legally received the property.
The key point that the courts chose to ignore was that Dolina’s misconception had nothing to do with the substance of the transaction. She wanted to sell the apartment, and she did. She received the full amount. She expected to receive the money so she could keep it. And then, albeit under the influence of deception, she disposed of the money independently. But this is no longer a civil-law issue for the buyer, but the consequences of a separate crime.
There is a simple principle in civil law: if you demand restitution, return what you received. If you want the apartment back, return the money. But the money was voluntarily transferred to third parties. This is the seller’s risk, not the bona fide purchaser’s. Shifting this risk to the buyer means undermining the very institution of protection for bona fide purchasers.
The realtors and lawyers who oversaw the transaction also bear no responsibility for what happened. They checked the property, the parties, the encumbrances, and the legality of the terms. The contract clearly states: the transaction is voluntary, without duress or delusion. There were no external signs of a crime at the time of the transaction.
The decisions of the courts that sided with Dolina look less like legal verdicts and more like legal chaos resulting from pressure on the court.

Head of Moscow Customs Caught in Case |
The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel learned of a major scandal in the Federal Customs Service related to the illegal receipt of information on the declaration of goods transported across the border. The Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case under Part 4 of Article 274.1 (illegal influence on the critical information infrastructure of the Russian Federation) and Part 6 of Article 290 (accepting a bribe on an especially large scale) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. So far, two defendants are known: Roman Tarkhov and a certain Sheinikov, both are employees of the FCS and have been arrested. Tarkhov has been charged under both articles, Sheinikov has been charged with accepting a bribe.
The charges are based on a confession and the testimony of an intermediary that he transferred money to Sheinikov for obtaining information. According to the investigation, Tarkhov and Sheinikov had access to the Malakhit ISS and could create requests to obtain data contained in the system. The case also includes employees of Tarkhov’s unit as witnesses and suspects. He himself declared his readiness to cooperate with the investigation. The customs officer’s defense asked the court to release him under house arrest, but the judge decided that the information presented at this stage of the case was sufficient to conclude that the suspicions of Tarkhov’s involvement in the acts under investigation were justified. According to a source of Rucriminal.info, Tarkhov R.V. served in the Moscow Customs as the head of the operational and analytical department, and everyone has long known that he and his employees have long been trading in closed official databases. But this is only the tip of the iceberg in a chain of abuses and gross violations of information security that systematically occur in this customs office. A very large leak of official information comes from a number of departments. At a number of customs posts, completely unauthorized persons have access to various programs for performing customs operations and & quot;Malachite& quot;. No work is being done to prevent these abuses at Moscow Customs, and all because in the event of the establishment of illegal actions that clearly fall under Article 274 of the Criminal Code, the head of Moscow Customs, V.A. Romanovsky, takes all measures to conceal these crimes.
In particular, at the Novomoskovsky customs post, employees of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Federal Customs Service uncovered and documented facts of the post head, A.N. Antonov, providing his account, access to all KPS and & quot;Malachite& quot; to unidentified persons.
At the request of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Federal Customs Service, an official investigation was ordered at Moscow Customs in August, which, at the direction of V.A. Romanovsky, was carried out formally and superficially and without an in-depth study of all the circumstances of the illegal impact on the critical information infrastructure of the Russian Federation, as interpreted by the Criminal Code. The outcome of the official investigation was based on fictitious explanations given by customs officers who took the blame upon themselves, having been pressured and intimidated by Antonov A.N.

Romanovsky V.A., knowing the details of what happened very well, in order to protect Antonov A.N., to whom he is very favorable, possibly due to his informal relations with him at work, not only from dismissal on discrediting grounds, but also from possible criminal prosecution, gives the order to conduct the investigation superficially and without sending the materials to the Investigative Committee.
At the same time, real persecution and harassment began on the part of Romanovsky V.A. of the head of the Moscow CED Zverev R.A. and his subordinate employees for minor violations, in comparison with those indicated above. And all this because the head of the CED never agreed to any dubious service proposals, to which the head of the Moscow Customs repeatedly inclined him.
These facts, as well as the history of dubious relations of Romanovsky V.A. with the TLC & quot;Elektrougli& quot; received wide publicity and resonance in the Federal Customs Service, which will undoubtedly have a deplorable effect on the future career of Lieutenant General Romanovsky V.A., despite all his efforts to remain in this customs office.

Sir Thomas Mun: Pioneer of Early Mercantilism and Defender of English Trade |

• Early Life and Family Background
• Career as a Merchant
• Leadership of the East India Company
• Economic Philosophy and Mercantilism
• Contributions During the 1620 Economic Depression
• Legacy and Influence on Economic Thought
Sir Thomas Mun, born on 17 June 1571 and passing on 21 July 1641, is widely recognized as one of the last prominent figures of early mercantilism in England. Mun s life and work revolved around his dedication to trade, his belief in the active role of the state in economic growth, and his influential leadership in the East India Company. His writings, particularly A Discourse of Trade from England unto the East-Indies, provided practical guidance for maintaining a positive balance of trade a principle that would shape English economic policies for decades. Mun s career exemplifies the intertwined nature of commerce, state policy, and early economic theory.
Early Life and Family Background
Thomas Mun was born into a well-established London family in the parish of St Andrew Hubbard. He was the third child of John Mun and grew up immersed in commercial and financial networks. His family s involvement in trade and currency management, including his grandfather s role as provost of moneyers at the Royal Mint, provided Mun with early exposure to economic practices and monetary policies. These familial connections likely influenced his understanding of commerce, currency, and the mechanisms of wealth accumulation, laying a foundation for his later mercantilist philosophies.
At the age of forty-one, Mun married Ursula Malcott, and together they had three children: John, Ann, and Mary. They settled in St Helen Bishopsgate, a parish that reflected their social standing and connection to London s mercantile community. Although details of Mun s formal education remain unknown, his practical experience and family background contributed significantly to his economic expertise.
Career as a Merchant
Mun began his professional journey around 1596 as a member of the Mercers Company. His trade activities focused primarily on Mediterranean commerce, with significant dealings in Italy and the Middle East. Mun proved exceptionally adept at navigating the complexities of international trade, successfully amassing substantial wealth. His business acumen and strategic investments enabled him to establish a reputation as a prominent merchant in London.
By 1615, Mun s commercial success led to his election as a director of the East India Company, one of the most influential trading enterprises of the era. His career demonstrates the combination of practical experience and strategic thinking necessary for managing large-scale trade operations during the early 17th century.
Leadership of the East India Company
The East India Company, established in partnership with the British Crown, aimed to expand English trade in the East Indies and assert influence over new territories. Under Mun s leadership as director, the company focused on maximizing exports and increasing overall wealth generation. Mun s policies emphasized efficiency, regulation, and strategic planning to ensure that England derived the greatest economic benefit from its overseas ventures.
The onset of the 1620 economic depression intensified Mun s responsibilities. England faced a negative balance of trade due to excessive imports from India and insufficient exports. As a result, Mun s leadership became crucial not only for the East India Company but also for national economic stability. His strategies were instrumental in defending the company against criticism and guiding government intervention to correct trade imbalances.
Economic Philosophy and Mercantilism
Thomas Mun is best known for his contributions to mercantilist thought. Central to his philosophy was the principle of achieving a positive balance of trade: ensuring that exports consistently exceeded imports to increase national wealth. In A Discourse of Trade from England unto the East-Indies, Mun outlined practical strategies for England to strengthen its economy through controlled trade policies, careful resource management, and state support of commerce.
Mun s mercantilism emphasized the symbiotic relationship between private enterprise and government oversight. By advocating for policies that prioritized national economic interests, Mun demonstrated the importance of strategic trade planning and the careful regulation of imports and exports. His ideas laid the groundwork for modern economic policies focused on trade surpluses and national wealth accumulation.
Contributions During the 1620 Economic Depression
The economic depression of 1620 posed significant challenges for England. Trade imbalances had led to a depletion of precious metals, reduced domestic production, and widespread financial uncertainty. Mun played a key role in mitigating these effects through both his leadership at the East India Company and his advisory work for the government.
Mun argued that strengthening exports, managing imports, and promoting domestic production were essential steps to restore economic stability. His practical guidance helped the English economy recover by emphasizing sustainable trade practices, promoting the accumulation of national wealth, and advocating policies that integrated private commerce with public economic objectives.
Legacy and Influence on Economic Thought
Sir Thomas Mun remains a pivotal figure in the history of economic theory. His writings on trade and mercantilism influenced not only his contemporaries but also subsequent generations of economists. Mun s emphasis on the balance of trade, state involvement in economic policy, and the practical management of commerce continues to resonate in discussions of economic strategy and national wealth management.
As a merchant, director, and economic thinker, Mun exemplified the fusion of theory and practice. His work bridged the gap between practical commercial management and broader economic policy, establishing him as a key contributor to early modern economic thought.
Sir Thomas Mun s life reflects a profound commitment to commerce, economic theory, and national prosperity. From his early days in a London mercantile family to his leadership of the East India Company, Mun s practical experience informed his influential writings on trade and mercantilism. His advocacy for a positive balance of trade, strategic export management, and state-supported commerce left an enduring legacy in economic thought, positioning him as a crucial figure in England s economic history.

MLS Is Back Campaign Unites Fans Around Fun and Entertainment |

• Shifting Focus From Rivalries to Shared Experience
• Strategic Planning Behind MLS Is Back
• Advertising Campaigns and Key Creative Elements
• Leveraging Data for Fan Engagement
• Mid-Season Initiatives and Activations
Major League Soccer (MLS) is redefining the way sports leagues connect with their fans by prioritizing a universal message over traditional team rivalries. The league s latest campaign, MLS Is Back, emphasizes that being a soccer fan is fun, entertaining, and accessible to everyone. Launching during a landmark year for soccer in North America, this initiative coincides with the FIFA World Cup, taking place across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, offering MLS a rare opportunity to broaden its audience and showcase the excitement of the sport.
Shifting Focus From Rivalries to Shared Experience
Competition has always fueled passion in sports, but MLS is taking a different approach. Instead of highlighting rivalries between its 30 teams, the league is unifying its brand around shared fan experiences. This strategy emphasizes enjoyment, drama, and community rather than tension and conflict. By focusing on a universal feeling that all fans can relate to, MLS is creating a stronger, more cohesive identity for the league and making soccer more inviting to new audiences.
Strategic Planning Behind MLS Is Back
Radhika Duggal, MLS s chief marketing officer, led the development of this campaign with the challenge of balancing the league s overarching goals against the unique identities of its 30 clubs. The solution involved identifying a singular experience that fans should feel: fun and entertainment. Duggal explained that the campaign distilled the league s brand essence to these core values, allowing for consistent messaging while respecting the individuality of each club. This strategic approach ensures a unified voice that resonates across markets without diluting the local character of each team.
Advertising Campaigns and Key Creative Elements
The MLS Is Back campaign features three new ads designed to highlight the league s vision of fun and engagement:
• The Call A social-first ad developed with Ogilvy, starring NBA legend and Los Angeles FC owner Magic Johnson. Johnson calls MLS stars in playful, engaging ways, emphasizing excitement and surprise. It premiered on February 12, ahead of the season opener.
• Fan-Centric Spots Two ads created with Mercado McCann showcase fans enjoying the emotional highs and lows of soccer with friends and family. These ads debuted nationally on broadcast and social platforms during opening weekend on February 21.
The combination of celebrity engagement, social-first content, and relatable fan experiences ensures the campaign appeals to both seasoned followers and newcomers, maximizing brand reach.
Leveraging Data for Fan Engagement
A critical component of the campaign is MLS s sophisticated digital marketing engine, which allows the league to target fans with highly personalized content. Duggal emphasized that understanding fans knowing their favorite players, preferred teams, and engagement habits enables MLS to deliver the right message through the right channel at the right time. This data-driven approach ensures authenticity and strengthens fan loyalty while creating meaningful interactions, such as sending timely updates or stories tailored to individual preferences.
Mid-Season Initiatives and Activations
Looking beyond the season opener, MLS plans to maintain momentum with mid-season campaigns and fan activations. These initiatives include live events featuring celebrities, interactive games, and prize giveaways. Duggal highlighted that while these activations enhance the fan experience, the matches themselves remain the central engagement point. By embedding entertainment directly into the core product the game MLS keeps fans at the heart of its marketing strategy throughout the year.
MLS Is Back demonstrates the league s commitment to reimagining fan engagement in sports marketing. By focusing on fun, entertainment, and shared experiences, MLS successfully bridges the gap between long-time supporters and new audiences. Leveraging creative advertising, strategic planning, and data-driven insights, the league ensures that every touchpoint from social media to live events strengthens fan connection. As MLS continues to grow, this campaign sets a benchmark for how sports organizations can unite their audiences around a common, memorable experience.
