A powerful winter storm blanketing much of the United States delivered Hollywood its quietest weekend of the year at the box office. With more than 140 million Americans under winter storm warnings and approximately 250 theaters closed from Texas to Maine, overall ticket sales declined sharply. Against this challenging backdrop, Mercy claimed the top spot in North America with $11.2 million, according to studio estimates.

Winter Storm Impact on Theaters Nationwide

Severe weather significantly disrupted moviegoing across key markets. Data from Comscore indicated widespread closures, directly affecting box office revenue. Even without the storm, the frame was not expected to produce blockbuster numbers. Still, the combination of hazardous travel conditions and a limited slate of major releases resulted in one of the softest weekends of the year for domestic cinemas.

Industry analysts note that weather-related downturns are cyclical but can compound existing market softness, particularly in January and February when high-profile tentpoles are scarce.

Mercy Dethrones Avatar at No. 1

The Amazon MGM sci-fi thriller Mercy, starring Chris Pratt, centers on a man in a near-future courtroom drama presided over by an artificial intelligence judge. Produced on a reported $60 million budget, the film debuted with modest numbers and unfavorable reviews, including a 20% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a B- CinemaScore from audiences.

Despite the critical reception, Mercy managed to unseat Avatar: Fire and Ash, which had held the No. 1 position for a month. The performance underscores how even underwhelming openings can top the charts during low-traffic weekends.

Avatar Fire and Ash Slows Domestically

Directed by James Cameron, Avatar: Fire and Ash slid to second place with $7 million domestically. While the film has surpassed $1 billion internationally and added $28.1 million overseas in its sixth weekend, its domestic total of $378.5 million trails significantly behind the franchise s earlier entries.

The original Avatar (2009) grossed $2.9 billion worldwide, while Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) reached $2.3 billion. Though Fire and Ash remains a global draw, its North American performance suggests diminishing returns compared to the groundbreaking earlier installments.

Oscar Nominees See Mixed Results

Awards season once guaranteed a significant Oscar bump, but recent trends indicate a more muted effect. Several top nominees had already completed theatrical runs. However, select films experienced renewed interest.

Chloé Zhao s Hamnet, nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, earned $2 million in its first wide-release weekend. Starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, the Shakespearean drama has accumulated $17.6 million domestically and $42.1 million globally after two months in theaters.

Meanwhile, Josh Safdie s Marty Supreme, featuring Timothée Chalamet, added $3.5 million in its sixth weekend. The A24 release surpassed $100 million worldwide, with $86.2 million domestically, marking a commercial milestone for the indie distributor.

Horror and New Releases Struggle

New entries found it difficult to gain traction. Return to Silent Hill, the third installment in the franchise launched in 2006, opened with $3.2 million under distributor Iconic Events. Additionally, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta, saw a steep second-week drop after its initial debut.

The subdued weekend illustrates the vulnerability of theatrical releases to external disruptions and shifting audience habits. While global markets continue to support tentpole franchises, domestic turnout remains sensitive to weather, competition, and review cycles.

As Hollywood moves deeper into awards season, studios will look to upcoming spring releases to reinvigorate the box office. For now, winter storms and mixed audience reception have combined to produce a rare moment of calm atop the charts.
