Craft: Knitting

Level: Intermediate

Materials:

• 1 ball worsted weight (4) yarn. For the example shown above, I had been itching to use Bernat Sheep(ish) - a 70% acrylic, 30% wool combo yarn - in the colorway Robins Eggish. 
• Size US 7 circular needles
• Tapestry needle
• Stitch marker

Abbreviations:

• PM: Place Marker
• SM: Slip Marker
• st(s): stitch(es)
• 1-to-5 inc: *k1, p1, k1, p1, k1* in next st
• ssk: slip, slip, knit
• k2tog: knit 2 sts together
• sl2: slip 2 sts
• p2sso: slip 2 sts over previous st

Notes:

• Slip stitch marker at the end of each round so you know where the next row begins

Pattern:

CO 84 sts

PM and join in circle, being careful not to twist stitches.

Ribbing:

*K1, P1* around for 1". SM at end of each round.

Teardrop pattern:

• Round 1: *P1, 1-to-5 inc, p2, repeat from *.
• Rounds 2-4: *P1, k5, p2, repeat from *.
• Round 5: *P1, ssk, k1, k2tog, p2, repeat from *.
• Round 6: *P1, k3, p2, repeat from *.
• Round 7: *P1, sl2-k1-p2sso, p1, 1-to-5 inc, repeat from *.
• Rounds 8-10: *P3, k5, repeat from *.
• Round 11: *P3, ssk, k1, k2tog, repeat from *.
• Round 12: *P3, k3, repeat from *.
• Round 13: *P1, 1-to-5 inc, p1, sl2-k1-p2sso, repeat from *.
• Repeat rounds 2-13.

Stitch Map:

I know that written instructions (especially the more intricate kind) can be a bit daunting. To help you visualize what's going on in the Teardrop Pattern, I've used Stitch Maps to design an actual "map", if you will, showing how the stitches play together.

Finishing:

Using a tapestry needle, thread yarn through ALL remaining stitches. Yes, ALL of them. Tug strong enough to pull the circle as closed as possible without breaking your yarn. When the circle is as closed as it can get, begin sewing the circle shut. I did this by alternating sides of the hat in which I placed my needle, somewhat resembling a cross shape, but you can use whatever gathering method you like best.
