NEWSPAPER FOR POETS CHALLENGES LITERARY JOURNALS
By Veronica Bode
Special for The Moscow Tribune
(fragments)
Poetry is being read all over Moscow, in the parks, metro and in the homes of all literary minded people.
If it isn't, it should be? for the city has, at last, its own newspaper totally devoted to everything poetic.
Aptly named, Poetry is a newspaper of poets for poets and it's the first of its kinds in Moscow. It is planned to be published monthly as a supplement to the daily paper Izvestia.
The newspaper was founded by the DOOS poetic group, which was formed 10 years ago by a group of poets including Konstantin Kcdrov, who is now Poetrys editor-in-chief.
DO()S is a Russian acronym standing for the "Voluntary Society for the protection of Dragon Flies" a well-known Russian fable by lvan Krylov.
The group created Poetry to provide a forum for poets separate from the vast number of literary journals that combine all genres of writing.
There has been a need for this kind of paper for ages and what's important is that its been
compiled totally by the poets themselves without much outside interference , said Kedrov
So how else does Poetry differ from other literary publications, and whats so special about it?..
The editors arc striving to ensure that their newspaper is exactly about what its title suggests although some prose and the odd essay connected with poetry will he printed from time to time.
As for criticism, an editorial column will give ample opportunity for poets and readers alike to applaud or ridicule works bay other poets. And there will be no spoon-fed explanations for the poetic novice, who will have to exercise his one grey cells to figure out what the poet means.
In the first issue, readers will be treated to contemporary poets such as Elena Katsuba, Igor Kholin and Vasily Betaky. A front-page article by Editor-in-Chief Kedrov, Comments for the Absence Text, demonstrates the papers avant-garde tendency.
The first editions will also feature visual poetry with works by Igor Burikhin, Henry Sapgir and Andrei Vosnesensky
There will a poem by the avant-garde poet Andrei Bartenev along with a photo from his latest exhibition.
Even the small works of prose included are poetical , with works by Valeria Narbikova, Nina Sadur and Victor Persik.
The international avant-garde is represented by Flemish poet Paul Van Ostaian
The format created for Poetry is what Kedrov cols metametafor and anagram verse. The poets think that the language of poetry should be similar to that of everyday life but mast have its own particular meaning.
The editors are proud of their accomplishment and self-sustained efforts
The publishers eventually hope to distribute the paper abroad in universities and Slavonic cultural centers throughout Europe.
