Гобелен - один из видов декоративного искусства, стенной односторонний безворсовый ковёр с сюжетной или орнаментальной композицией, вытканный вручную перекрёстным переплетением нитей. Ткач пропускает уточную нить через основу, создавая одновременно и изображение, и саму ткань. В Энциклопедическом словаре Брокгауза и Ефрона гобелен определяется как «тканый ковёр ручной работы, на котором разноцветной шерстью и отчасти шёлком воспроизведена картина и нарочно приготовленный картон более или менее известного художника».

Парижская королевская мануфактура Гобеленов была очень популярна в XVII веке, так что тканные ручные ковры стали часто называть гобеленами. Это название видимо и завез Петр вместе с несколькими гобеленами от Гобеленов. Все остальные гобелены, сделанные другими мастерами, начиная с древних египтян, правильно называть шпалерами. Использовалось также название «мильфлер». Так называли средневековые шпалеры французского производства, на которых фон был заполнен цветами и букетиками.
